had a great break, very lucky with the weather considering still early in the season. position of the hotel was excellent for getting around, close to beach & marina. we had a hire car so bought a map & went off exploring quite a few local towns, the old part of Faro, Tavira, Silves & the lighthouse @ Cape St Vincent are all worth a visit, especially if you want some great pics to remind you of your trip. Lots of bars & restaurants to choose from in the marina @ varying costs, something for everyone. Collapse

Myself and my wife stayed half board at the Ampalius between 15-22/01/2018. We know Vilamoura very well as we stayed at the Dom Pedro Marina xmas 2016. The hotel lived up to our expectations and some. The first thing to say is that there are hotel renovations going on at the moment and there is a lot of noise but this did not upset our stay as we knew about it and we hardly noticed as we were having such a good time. The check in was painless and our room was on the 8th floor with a sea view as requested and a view of the marina. The room was a good standard twin with a balcony, it was looked after by the maids on a daily basis and was very clean. The balcony didn't get the sun until 3pm but the main sea front rooms were undergoing renovations and they get the sun all day. The room had only one small problem namely a dodgy fridge but everything else was excellent. You can also request a kettle if required. The Spa area is top drawer with a great pool, jacuzzi, sauna, turkish bath and gym. The changing rooms are a little cramped but are manageable. The basic facilities are free to all guests. Bring a swim hat for the pool. The best thing about the hotel is the food. Breakfast was good with all the choices available, but the highlight were the evening meals. There is normally a buffet service in the main eating area, but as the hotel was not full enough we ate in the main lounge from the a la carte menu and the food was the last word, the chef was a magician. The food was the highlight of our trip. The outside pool area was open but very quiet, the renovations had something to do with it but once they are finished it will be a nice area to relax. Vilamoura is a really great area with a stylish marina and a two top beaches. It is a brief stroll away from Quarteira which is a fishing town and is nice place to visit. The Vila Gale Ampalius is a top hotel and will be our winter bolt hole for sometime to come. Collapse

We had such a nice Christmas break here 2016 in a junior suite with wall to wall blue skies that we came back again 2017. Because the prices had gone up quite a bit over the year we downgraded this trip to a superior seaview room at the front of the hotel, which are still bigger than rooms in many hotels and due to the shape of the building still have the same 20 foot wide balconies and huge patio doors and windows as the junior suites. The weather was less kind this year. Not a lot anyone can do about that, but at least we only had a couple of actual rain showers. The twin beds were a bit too hard for us but you just have to ask for a mattress topper at reception, which isn’t really advertised anywhere. It’s not the thickest topper you’ll ever come across but it changes the bed totally from one that is plain hard to one that is firm and supportive and very comfortable indeed. Plus it’s a single topper across both mattresses so your beds effectively get changed from a pair of singles to a super king double. Like the junior suite, superior rooms are timeshare rooms and have a kitchenette – the fridge was very useful. But you don’t automatically get a kettle. Ask for one at reception or the bar. The sofa bed in the junior suite last year was one of the best sofas we’ve ever had in any hotel. Unfortunately, in superior rooms you have to make do with a couple of chairs. Yes, the bathrooms are a bit poky with a really horrid tube type of ancient hairdryer but there's plenty of hot water and the lighting's not too bad. In-room WiFi seemed very decent to us, but we don’t try to stream things so what do we know? We thought breakfast was good and so were the buffet dinners – certainly better than many hotel buffets in our opinion. Dinner buffet is normally €25pp but it’s increased to a very reasonable €36pp on Xmas Eve and Xmas Day. Happy hour in the bar for either one or two hours until 7pm with 20% discount. It was much busier over Xmas in the hotel this year because a party of 80 ex-pat Brits from Spain were staying. Winter is obviously the time that building works get done in recently some reviewers have complained about the noise. Over Xmas there wasn’t a lot of noisy work going on. They’re in the middle of a programme to replace the old sliding patio doors and windows in junior suites and superior rooms with double glazed units with a central hinged door. We’re very pleased about that because, in the winter especially, when the bad weather comes from the south west, the wind howls in through gaps around the old doors and shakes them like mad. Hopefully the new ones will seal better. As usual, the staff were great. We think Portuguese people are some of the nicest you’ll ever meet. This is a nice hotel, it’s not top end luxury, but we’d recommend the better rooms to anyone. However, unless you can sleep through a noisy party, don’t book a junior suite between June and September when Purobeach Beach Club is up and running because the junior suites look directly at the club across the road. We have stayed at this hotel on many occasions in the past and have had a great time. The staff are great and nothing is to much trouble they are very helpful. But this time the hotel had building work going on while we were staying. They told us when we were checking in and told us that they have informed easy jet holidays but easy jet never told us.They upgraded us to the back of the hotel on the top floor and said the noise should not effect us. I blame easy jet not the hotel and have taken up the matter with easy jet.We will go back to this hotel and hopefully next time all the building work would have been carried out. The only thing they could change is those little sausages and bacon could be a bit better. Collapse
