Maybe one of the older Thon Hotels as there is more than one in Oslo.It was one of least expensive I found (Norway is expensive in general). Location is pretty good. About a 15-20 minute walk to get to the train station and a main bus stop where you can catch the bus to the Viking ship museum and the Folk museum. Room was decent size and probably one of the better breakfasts offered with lots of choices.Staff was pleasant enough. Collapse

I arrived early and went to leave my luggage so that I could walk around Oslo for a few hours. The guy at the reception did not check my name, nor if I in fact had a booking, but just gave me the key to the storage room. There are notices saying that the hotel is not responsible for left storage, which I do understand. However, giving the key to a complete stranger without checking anything, could be a huge security issue. I made sure I left nothing of value and walked around Oslo for some hours. When I came back to check in, the payment machine did not work and I had to fill in a form with all my credit card details. Then I got the key and waited for ages for the lift as only one of the lifts were working. I had a room on the 5th floot, facing the street. The room was ok, very simple and the soap dispensers were empty, but room was clean. I had an event in the early evening and came back exhausted from a long day, looking forward to a good night's sleep. As I was just dozing off at 10 pm the nightmare started. The Oslo kommune had decided that this was the night that they would clean the streets around the hotel. The sweeping truck went back and forth for a couple of hours and the noise was awful, even on the 5th floor with the window closed. By midnight I was desperate and called the reception, suggesting I could change the room to one facing the back yard. The guy at the reception said that he would speak to the cleaners and get them to stop, no idea if he did but they must have paid no attention. At midnight they moved on from the sweeping truck to the cleaning truck and continued for at least another hour. It was impossible to sleep, even with the window closed, earplugs and a pillow over my head. I know that this is the work of Oslo Kommune and not the hotel but an offer to move room would have been appreciated. In any case, for future guests, ask for a room at the back as traffic noise can be bad. After only a few hours of sleep, I had to get up and had breakfast. The food was good and there was a nice selection but the room is unfriendly and very noisy. Would I stay here again? Never! The only reason I chose it was due to it's closeness to Pilestredet where I had meetings. I would have preferred to walk 10 kms to stay in this uncharming budget place for not such a budget price. There is no need to take a taxi to Oslo if you are arriving att Oslo Gardemoen Airport just follow the signs for Flytoget (Airport Express Train). If you are an adult that pays the full fare (190 NOK single fare) you go straight to the entrance gates and draw your credit card to enter. If you are senior you pay half price and need to go to the ticket machines to get yourticket, which you scan at the entrance. (When returning to the airport you need to draw your card/scan your ticket to enter the airport building.) Flytoget runs every 10th minute and will take you to Oslo S (Oslo Central Station) in 22 minutes. If your train continues beyond Oslo you will alight the train at the north side of the station but if it ends at Oslo S you get off at the station’s south side. (When leaving for the airport the train always goes from the south side.) To get to Thon Hotel Munch it is easiest if walk over to the north side by turning right just after you coming into the station building and take the escalator up into the wide corridor that brings you over to the north side. There you’ll find a Seven Eleven where you can buy tickets for the local transport (trams, buses and underground). A prepaid single ticket costs 35NOK/18 NOK for adult/senior and a 24 hour ticket 105 NOK/53 NOK. Until April 2018 maintenance work is done so the tram towards the hotel has been changed to bus. Find out more on the website of Ruter (the local transport system). Take the escalator down at the north side and pass the taxis on the way out, turn left into the street, Biskop Gunnerus gate, cross straight over Fred Olsens Gate and follow the tram tracks for 850 meters up the hill passing the cathedral on your left. Follow the tram line along Grensen until a triangular square (C. J. Hambros Plass) opens up in front of you, take right into Apotekargata, the first left into Munchs gate and pass by the guard hut on the right and the parking house on the left. At the next crossing you’ll see Thon Hotel Munch with its entrance in Bernhard Getz’ gate . This walk is 1 100 meters and would take about 15 minutes. When entering Thon Hotel Munch in the first floor the reception is at one side of a quite spacious hall with seating and a computer with printer for guests. The breakfast room is situated in second floor on the other side of the building with one whole side of windows looking out on Munchs gate and is really spacious with another room at the end. I have stayed quite a number of times and I keep coming back. I like the quiet location that is close to the main shopping street Karl Johan. Close by there are museums, theatres and restaurants (one Chinese in the hotel building). This time I got a room at the very end of the hotel corridor and the only one facing the inner yard. The room was a bit chilly but I opened the thick curtains hiding the radiator and its thermostat so it soon warmed up. When going to bed I made sure that the thermostat was out in the open air and not behind the curtain. There was a lamp at the writing table and sockets for the water boiler and my laptop, tea bags and instant coffee and beside a luggage rack for my suitcase. The Wi-Fi worked fine. The bathroom was equipped with hair drier, a comfortably heated floor and was brightly lit. The room and bath was spotlessly clean. The breakfast at Hotel Munch is amassing. It has got everything. There was a pile of loaves to cut slices from and a lot of fresh fruit bananas, oranges, tangerines and melons. You will also find fresh vegetables, pates, salmon, hams, sausages and cheeses. The hot stuff was scrambled eggs, chorizo, meat balls, bacon and beans. Sorry, I forgot to bring my camera to the breakfast this time but there are quite a few in my review from February 2017. One lady could not find porridge but it came in a bag so you could make it yourself by adding hot water, I enjoyed staying at Thon Hotel Munch for the good and friendly service provided and the excellent breakfast. I urge you to come here. I will return. . Collapse

I like this hotel a lot. I’ll tell you why. Firstly, they have the best breakfast spread so far. Hot meals, cold cuts, breads, fruits and fresh vegetables for salad. The amazing and scrumptious spread made me looked forward to breakfast every morning. If breakfast is quite a normal service to you, how about a hotel providing soup for its guests in the evening? I felt that was thoughtful. The first night, it was cannelloni beans, and the next day it was minestrone soup. On top of that, there is free flow of Nespresso coffee and Twinning teabags on the ground floor. The room temperature was perfect with the heater turned on all day. The bed and pillows were comfortable, I slept so well. The checkin and checkout were a breeze. I even received a text to check in and got my room number a day before I arrived. I thought that was something special. The service was impeccable, the staff were smiling always and very helpful. I’ll definitely recommend this hotel to my friends. Collapse
