Booked this hotel for one night for myself and a friend as we were visiting another friend in Dorking. To be totally honest We just wanted a cheap, clean hotel for one night and Really weren’t expecting too much? When we arrived we were totally gobsmacked at how beautiful this place was! From the manicured Gardens, to the actual room Itself? It was a beautiful weekend weather wise and the fact this hotel was so scenic and in an ideal location just made our weekend! Our friend was supposed to be going home but after a few drinks decided she wanted to stay with us? So she went down to reception on the off chance and asked for a spare duvet, she was given a duvet and pillows free of charge with no questions asked! The staff were all very friendly & polite especially the guy on reception. The Duke of Wellington across the Rd was also a great little find and we would definitely recommend! Collapse

Set in the iconic part of Surrey between Leatherhead and Guildford amongst the Surrey hills the Thatcher hotel is a beautiful Tudor style set back from the main road. Entering the property you first see the original house in the notorious Tudor style with its black and white frontage in front of the newer main part of the hotel which has been designed in a way that holds the style keeping the history of the building alive. There is plenty of parking in front and at the back of the hotel however not particularly busy for such a large hotel was potentially a small sign of things to come? Walking into the reception area it is clean and simple although looks a little dated with the desk showing signs of age. The staff were extremely friendly and happy to talk (which I’m sometimes a little too happy to do) helping with any questions we had. Whilst in reception there was a gentlemen asking about his keycard for his room which apparently had stopped working, I thought nothing of it until we tried to get into our room struggling ourselves. This did happen more than once during the course of the afternoon which became tedious at the end of the evening having to go back to reception when our bed was calling. It is apparently a new system which appears to not yet have been resolved. The room on first appearance was very clean and simple but welcoming. The bed was fine for two people although booking a deluxe room I would expect at least a king size bed rather than a double. The decor was dated and on closer inspection there were a few points with some damage to the paint on the walls and the curtains looking tired needing a little care and attention in the next year or so before it becomes a room that nobody would like to stay in. I would suggest this is similar to the general appearance of the entire hotel looking outdated and tired, however there was one area of the hotel I felt was a perfect design holding the character and history or the original building. I know this sounds like a contradiction however I personally feel if they try to keep the history of the original building inside similar to the outside rather than carpets and interior from the 80s or 90s it would be a much nicer experience. A short walk from the hotel you can see a little more history of the area with the tall and outstanding former guesthouse to Horsley towers built in a mock medieval design marked with two coats of arms and a crown of the noble Lovelace family. Across the road is the Duke of Wellington pub (please see my review of this on my page) and a little walk into the village you’ll find a parade of shops and the Horsley railway station. One last little nugget, the area was the base for the filming of The Colour of magic in 2008 a film based on the book by Terry Pratchett. The bar area was very open and bright with a lovely patio area to drink outside if the British weather allows… I did have a look into the restaurant area which look well laid out and the menu appeared to be simple yet perfect for the setting. I would suggest that if you are looking for a hotel in the true Surrey countryside not too far from some of the main towns and cities this is a good place to be in terms of location, however I would say it is a little expensive for what you get. If the hotel was updated it would be a fantastic place to stay. Collapse

After a long day on the road I needed a clean room and shower. Both where well catered for. Downstairs for a curry which was nice and reasonably priced. Good nights sleep had so no complaints on that score.
