The hotel stay was on 5* Sunborn Gibraltar and it really was five star. We only had bed and breakfast as we wanted to try other places. The breakfast at The Sunborn was amazing with everything you could imagine - even champagne (although that was too early for me!) Everything is really within walking distance (for able bodies). The cable cars and monkeys were great. Casement Square and the shops were all easily accessible and the food was delicious. The people were very friendly and I would definitely return at some point. Sunborn, Gibraltar We stayed at the ‘Sunborn’ for five nights (4th - 9th May 2018). It is a fabulous ship permanently moored in the Marina Bay of Gibraltar. We were welcomed with a glass of fizz as soon as we stepped aboard into the inviting and glitzy reception. Sergio efficiently checked us in, providing us with lots of useful information for our stay. Accommodation We were grateful to be allocated a wonderful room (615) on the sixth floor with a standing balcony view of the beautiful Marina and runway too. The latter not being a problem as there is usually no more than 3-5 flights a day and we found the planes landing and taking off fascinating with such a short an unique runway. The room was luxurious with everything we needed an more. It was immaculately clean which was maintained daily and with a turn back service in the evening too. The bed was extremely comfortable with a memory foam mattress topper. Restaurants and Bars There are two main restaurants. The ‘Sky Restaurant and Bar’ on the top (seventh floor) which hosts breakfast daily ands later options for lunch. We preferred sitting outside and were mostly able to achieve this although there were only 4-5 tables for two available. The breakfast was comprehensive in choice however, please see my comment below in respect of the service in this respect. ‘La Sala Restaurant and Bar’ is on the third floor and hosts evening dinner. The menu for both food and drink was varied and reasonably priced. (As a resident having dinner on the ship, the meal includes a bottle of wine.) On Friday 4th May there was entertainment in the form of a Michael Buble Tribute Singer who was excellent and added to the ambience of the evening. Staff were attentive and efficient. We used this restaurant twice during our stay and highly recommend the ‘La Sala Restuarant and Bar’ whilst staying on The ‘Sunborn’. The ‘Sapphire Bar’ is just above the reception on the third floor. It offers afternoon tea and drinks. We went to visit once but were asked to leave as it has been hired for a private function so cannot comment further. The ‘Aqua Pool Bar’ offers an attendance service for drinks and bar snacks or simple ice cubes for the large bucket tables and, again, they were very helpful and friendly. There is an area of 25 sunbeds on this part of the deck and a good sized shady seating area with relaxing sofas as well as bar tables and stools. There is a smallish splash pool which was very cool in temperature (too cold for me to venture) but it was used by many. Towels are provided. There is upbeat music playing all day. At the front of this deck, there is a further quiet area of a couple of sofas but mostly sun-beds (about 20) which gets more of the late afternoon sun in contrast to the ‘Aqua Pool Bar Area’ which starts to lose the sun for some of the sun-beds at this time. There is a bizarre system in place for the reservation of sun-beds in the ‘Aqua Pool Bar Area’. You can reserve a sun-bed for half a day (am up till 1.30pm / pm from 1.30pm onwards) including half bottle of Prosecco for £30 each or for the whole day including full bottle of Prosecco for £60 each. I assume this stops guests just saving sun-beds and then not using them. I understand this may be a problem at busy periods during full occupancy but it does seem a bit extreme. The Casino provides further entertainment and is well worth a visit. Location The ‘Sunborn’ is perfectly located in the Marina Bay of Gibraltar. The latter being a popular area for locals an tourists alike with many bars, restaurants, cafes and entertainment especially in the evenings. Marina Bay is a delight to wander around at any time of the day. Equally, it is only a two minute walk away from ‘Case ages Square’ which has more bars, restaurants and cafes and the start of the Main Street for shopping. The main bus station is at the entrance to ‘Casemates Square’ and allows you to travel all around Gibraltar Peninsula for £2.50 per adult per day. We walked from the Airport to the ‘Sunborn’ which took no more than 10-15 minutes and allowed the opportunity to stand on the unique runway which has a main road running right through the middle of it! We were very impressed with the cleanliness of Gibraltar and the opportunities to learn more about its history. Summary An absolutely superb ship with excellent accommodation, efficient and friendly service (most of the time), perfectly located for just about everything you would need for a stay in Gibraltar. I would highly recommend this to anyone and we will definitely be returning again soon and can’t wait! Just one area that could be improved The ‘Sky Bar’ where breakfast was served was a beautiful setting for breakfast but let down by the service. The first morning, guests were kept waiting as only a small percentage of the restaurant had tables set for breakfast and clearly it wasn’t enough for the number of guests residing . My resolution would be to open more tables to speed things up. This is what happened the next day. Also, every morning there were many options that had run out such as smoked salmon, melon, watermelon, tomatoes, peppers, salad. Every morning I asked if these could be replenished. Sometimes they were but never quickly and this meant that I spent a long time waiting around for what I needed. This could be so easily resolved as well by having a member of staff available at busy periods to do just that. A further issue was communication between the Manager of the restaurant and his staff. On one occasion (Tues 8th May) a notice was placed at the front deck to indicate the sun-bed area would be closed at 2pm due to a private function taking place. Contrasting information was being shared with me by the staff in the Aqua Pool Bar who said that the area concerned was open and there was no need to move from that area. Due to my confusion, I checked with the Restaurant Manager who told me abruptly that this area was closed. This again could have been alleviated by effective communication with his team to ensure that everyone was sharing the same and correct information with guests. If this could be addressed, I consider that the ‘Sunborn ’ is probably the best place to stay in Gibraltar! Collapse

I paid for a long weekend for my wife’s birthday! What a wonderful hotel with truly fantastic staff! We were both made to feel extremely special from the moment of our arrival to the time we departed! At breakfast the food was great, what ever you wanted it seemed to be there or available. The bars were always staffed and the staff even after one day remembered the drink you ordered. The room was spacious and in a nice quiet part of the ship, the bed was ‘huge’ and comfortable, I don’t usually sleep well the first night but went out and slept like a baby! Our balcony overlooked the unique Gibraltar runway! I think the better side to have as the flights are not frequent and not early or late. Collapse

Had a fabulous stay on board the Sunborn to celebrate our granddaughters 21st birthday. The service is 1st class and the rooms are brilliant. We had lunch in La Sala and the food and service was excellent. Breakfast is also very good with a huge selection. All the staff are courteous and helpful. The beds are really comfortable. Toiletries are useful and are replaced daily. We had a small balcony which was great to watch the planes landing and taking off. When booking ask for sea view to be on the best side. We have stayed several times on the Sunborn and will stay again! Collapse

So originally we were given room 620. You open the balcony doors and are confronted by a sports bar Mega screen booming out football and horse racing at all hours. No rooms on the quieter right side of the ship, so we upgraded to a junior suite at the back of the boat that gets no sun as the plunge pool overhangs above, but is also opposite all the bars & restaurants of Ocean Village. The drunks shout and scream till 2 or 3 in the morning and every nights sleep was broken as the surrounding high rise flats act as an echo chamber. You have to put the Do Not Disturb on every morning as mini-bar service comes around at just after 10 a.m.! And in the evening as cleaning/turndown comes between 5pm & 7.30pm!! Any thoughts of a lie in or nap before going out can be disturbed. Air con is cool even at 22 degrees. Duvets are thin so this can be an issue. Good service but unless you are a party animal and not worried by sleep, suggest the ROCK HOTEL instead. Collapse
