We arrived by car and had no choice but to wait on double yellows to allow unloading and valet parking in the covered park opposite. A warning of this would be helpful. The staff were very welcoming but the room was small and somewhat dingy - as was the bathroom. The bathroom appeared to have been recently refurbished but, as is often the case, the modern features were a triumph of style over function. Trying to regulate the shower temperature while at the same time controlling whether the water was directed either to the bath or the shower required a technique which escaped us. The restaurant staff were anxious to please but were let down by the kitchen. Our pasta with mushrooms turned out to be a game of hunt the mushroom. Our complaint was however courteously received and the cost of one main course was deducted from the bill. Beware though the addition of an 'optional' gratuity! All in all, very pleasant but probably not worth the £310 for 2 nights B & B. Our next 2 nights in the Fortescue in Salcombe (£220) were much better. Collapse

The views from the hotel (including our room), were exceptional, stunning, and took your breath away, but not as much as the climb back up from the beach or railway station which was conveniently placed immediately below the hotel. I and my wife are quite active, (we are both over 65), and although we managed the daily climb (twice a day) back up to the hotel, I could imagine that if you are infirm or not as fit as some people, it could be hard and would restrict your movement to and from the Hotel. The accommodation, food, and service were excellent, and if I was thinking of returning to St. Ives, I would definitely want to stay at the Harbour Hotel again! Collapse

Disgusted. Now possibly you cannot blame the hotel & spa, for the apartment (number 10) only allowing 2 passes to the pool but I can blame the apartment for lack of clarity on their website (a different review) and the conduct of the hotel receptionist at the pool. I’d have expected the 2 passes to be adults and kids are free, my error. Still don’t understand that though. However, the receptionist on Sunday 21st July allows us all in - no challenge, different receptionist on Monday 22nd July, different answer. Was told we’d have to pay for the 2 children - even after explaining our admittance yesterday she wouldn’t budge. “You’ll have to pay”, was the robust reply, we suggested we would just watch then “you’ll still have to pay” - what!! Pay to watch! Where else would you have to do that? So even seeing my two young girls in their swimming costumes and rubber ring - you cannot come in, so much for common sense, or bending the rules, the pool was empty I would add.....so cannot even use that excuse. We had one night in an inland room, the rooms was well decorated and ‘cosy’! There was a bottle of Prosecco in the room which was a lovely surprise. Comfy bed and quiet, I took ear plugs because another reviewer said the road was noisy but it was fine. The room was above the kitchen but not an issue, just a bit of conversation, cooking and occasional smell of bacon! Windows are frosted so not much option to look outside, even if there’s a wall there. The spa pool and jacuzzi is nice. I thought I’d be able to see the beach from the spa but there are trees in the way which seems a shame, I’m not sure if that is intentional. Sauna was good, steam room out of service. Bar area, outdoor seating area and decor in the hotel is excellent. Restaurant for breakfast is lovely, with views over the beach. There’s a good selection of meat, fruit, cereals, seeds and yoghurts. Then there’s a good selection of cooked breakfasts. The only reasons for not giving a 5* are minor - the key for our room was missing when we arrived, complementary newspaper didn’t arrive, husband’s cooked breakfast was cold. Staff were friendly and pleasant. Great location for the Porthminster Beach cafe and beach, and a short stroll into St Ives. We’ve stayed in a Harbour hotel before and will use them again. Collapse

My friend and I booked a spa afternoon and firstly, it delivered . £75 odd for a lovely lunch/afternoon tea, use of the spa facilities for the afternoon and a treatment which was excellent (thank you Georgia). If you are after the full spa experience this is not a dedicated spa- more a spa attached to a hotel but that is not a complaint. It was a lovely afternoon but if you are looking for total relaxation with top facilities and space with no children then probably look elsewhere. Still, we were both happy with the service provided and the surroundings are fabulous especially the view from where we had our afternoon tea Collapse

Before describing my stay, I'll say at the outset that I complained to the CEO, Mike Warren, when I returned home. I appreciated him taking my complaints on board very promptly and promising to ensure that the issues raised were rectified. He also offered a free night's bed and breakfast as recompense. My review relates to a week's stay in June. I was not informed either at the time of booking or upon arrival that the hotel is also a wedding venue. I was subjected to the racket of a very loud band on THREE separate nights; the noise didn't stop until midnight on each occasion. I have since learned that a friend of mine stayed at a property a couple of streets away from the hotel two weeks earlier and she could hear the noise from there. Don't stay at this place if you want peace and quiet - you won't get it if there's a wedding party there. Paying £5k for two rooms for a week, you'd at least expect the place to be clean - it wasn't. There was a layer of dust on every surface of our rooms throughout the week and the carpets were never vacuumed, either in our rooms or in the corridors. The handle of the bathroom door in one of the rooms was held together with black tape and the rubber strip along the bottom of the shower in the other room was hanging off. One of the "clean" towels was stained with make-up. Dinner at the hotel was not up to standard and the "hot" breakfast was cold. Plus points: lovely waiting staff, comfortable beds, nice White Company toiletries and amazing views. As mentioned above, it is to be hoped that the CEO has done as promised and rectified the problems. I'll look forward to reading more positive reviews from people who have stayed there since my unhappy experience. Collapse
