This hotel has been really good...good points. Friendly and helpful staff Good breakfast Great views of robben island from our room Free shuttle bus to the waterfront Good location Clean and tidy The only bad point is you only get 500mb of Wi-Fi which isn't the biggest problem but I'd think you'd get it free these days. You get an option to buy more but I think this is just a way of getting more money out of you. Otherwise would be 5* Also when we arrived they made a effort to have a plate of food and a bottle of bubbly congratulating us on our marriage which my wife loved. I'd stay here again. Collapse
Food & location is the highlight, weakness is the stingy offering of amenities & WIFI

Location Hotel is located in the city centre area of Cape town. The V&A waterfront is about 1km / 15 minutes walkway. From airport it takes just under 20 minutes. Within area is some nice touristic places to walk to, especially to waterfront quite a safe area with some sights to see & convention centre is close by. You can see Lion's head very clearly and a bit of Table mountain from hotel. Room Room on the 12th floor (think that is the highest floor) is their standard room product. It had a nice view of the city but is next to main roads and can be noisy if window is open. The spacious room had two comfortable king size beds with soft bedding including nice synthetic fur blanket and soft pillows. Flexi reading lights are on the outer sides. TV faces the bed but was a little disappointing as is is small, but had about 30 channels that includes movies, CNN, BBC in addition to local channels. There is a helpful guide though. Below is an adequate sized desk with mirror & below a small empty refrigerator. Kettle is offered with sachet tea & coffee. No bottle water provided for hot drinks of which surprising considering the drought that is affecting the city. The room also has a small chair & luggage rack. For storage there is a small dated looking wardrobe that contains a large laptop size safe & hair dryer. Though no ironing board or alarm clock offered- unusual for a business hotel in city centre. AC was dated with dial function & quite noisy with a very dusty looking cover. Bathroom though was clean & spacious offering a bath tub as well as separate shower cubicle- they removed the plug due to drought and have some signage with regard to that of which was clear. Amenities limited to unbranded shower gel & body lotion. There is a very small bottle of water for brushing teeth, but no dental kit is provided in this room. Decor was quite artistic with quite alot of lamps & lights, but annoyingly all have their own individual switches- so no master switch etc. Bathroom lights were sketchy and kept flickering indication a poor level of maintenance. In general room was comfortable with a nice view but not a great product for the business traveller, especially those needing an iron & dental kit like me. It was clean though. Facilities WIFI is secure but they only offer complimentary access up to 500mb then chargeable. Its quite stingy since without even streaming you tube but just working on some emails, reading news and bit of facebook racked up 500mb in about 3 hours. It seemed to be cheaper roaming on my international phone than buying any more data. Catering includes a restaurant & lobby bar. Breakfast had a great selection of cooked items & fruits. Room service was also very good, ordered an aged rump steak & it was delicious - one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time. Leisure facilities include a small outdoor pool just behind the bar area so not that private but if that doesn't bother you there are plenty of sun loungers of which are shaded. Used the small modern gym of with decent good working mainly cardio equipment (x2 treadmills and elliptical) & some weights. Also they offer a salon for massages of which didn’t use but price is around 700 rand as seen on signage. There is a small business centre with various computers cubicles but had issues connecting and printer didn't work. Staff Reception staff really welcoming & friendly. Concierge seemed less enthusiastic & a bit moody. Other staff like security whom get elevator & room service are all very nice. Drivers that provide airport transfers in a nice Mercedes are really friendly and interesting to chat to about what to do etc. Overall the hotel is average, it appears to be more business orientated but for the price is quite stingy with WIFI allowance, no iron, bottle water, no dental or shaver kit etc on what one would definitely get at another 4star hotel like Marriott, Westin or Novotel etc.. plus maintenance standard seemed poor. However staff are really nice and food have to say was out of this world. Very delicious. It is also in a good location for V&A if you dont mind walking about 15-20minutes. If not there are plenty of hotels closer. However great location for city centre. Collapse

Stayed at the Southern Sun for three nights as part of the Riviera tour, and we really liked the hotel and enjoyed our stay. The room (481) is modern in style, spotlessly clean with a large and very comfortable bed. Some in our group complained about room size but we felt this was standard for a city centre hotel and offered plenty of storage space. We enjoyed breakfast and found there to be a wide and varied choice, however coffee was slow every mornings on two days we had to find someone to serve us. But all staff were friendly and professional. Some of the best customer service we received was from the bar. We also enjoyed the cocktail menu and the bar food was good for a quick bite to eat. The food was so also good in the main restaurant, and turning a starter item into a main meal portion was no trouble. The hotel also provides a free shuttle to the waterfront which was really handy and is also located close to a stop for the city sighting seeing bus. We highly recommend this hotel and would be happy to stay here again. Collapse

we had a problem with original booked hotel and moved to Southern Sun. The receptionist was most helpful (Mark) and couldn't do enough for us to make us comfortable. the hotel room was great, the restaurant food exceptional and they ran a shuttle bus service to the V&A every half hour from 8am to 11,30pm. great location for getting around so highly recommended Collapse
Disappointed and as busy as an airport terminal

Having stayed at the sister hotel the Cullinan around the corner I was forced to relocate to this hotel due to overbooking. It happens. However the contrast between the Cullinan (Fantastic) and this hotel could not have been more disappointing. Service was poor as was the food and room quality/cleanliness. It is quite obviously a convenience hotel due to its location but this makes it feel like a bus station with non-stop traffic, not very relaxing. Collapse
