Sawrey House is a traditional converted country house retreat set in 3 acres of sculpted gardens designed for lazy indolence. It is the quintessential English rural hideaway, built in the 1830's with slate from the local quarry and is one of the prettiest buildings in the pristine conservation hamlet of Near Sawrey. As a quintessentially English rural hideaway, Sawrey House Hotel is sure to win a place in the hearts of nature lovers and romantics everywhere and is the ideal country retreat for people who appreciate the finer pleasures in life.
As a converted country house, all our rooms vary in size and shape depending on the positioning within the house. Most rooms overlook the gardens and enjoy amazing elevated views of Esthwaite Water and the forest beyond. The bedrooms are relaxing and peaceful, meaning you are able to unwind, enjoy a good night's sleep and allow you to wake up to the beautiful surroundings of the Lakeland fells ready for the day ahead. Facilities in the rooms include luxurious throws and pillows, complimentary tea & coffee trays, flat screen tvs, en-suite bathrooms, luxury toiletries from Elsyl, steam free mirrors, hair dryers and thermal black out window blinds.
Being in heart of the beautiful Lake District with stunning views of Esthwaite Water and Grizedale Forest, few hotels boast such magnificent views of this wonderful part of Cumbria. Next door is Hill Top Farm, once the home of Beatrix Potter, and visitors to Near Sawrey cannot fail to be captivated by the village's quaint tranquillity which so inspired her writings.

We booked this break last minute and on arrival walked into an empty hotel without a reception. A young girl eventually appeared but could not find our booking. She went to find the assistant manager who curtly said "you've just booked this, haven't you? We've been overbooked and will have to do some shuffling around". We were then handed our keys and she disappeared without a smile or a welcome. We had dinner in the restaurant which totally lacked atmosphere. The lamb and guinea fowl was very tasty but we were disappointed that there were no vegetables served with the dishes. We found our room clean but far too hot, the bathroom was the tiniest we have ever experienced. The bed was lumpy and the grandfather clock in the hallway annoyingly chimed all night long. We went down for breakfast at 9am and there was no one to greet us, the same young girl was waiting on and eventually came and took our order. We had to wait 50 minutes for our breakfast to arrive which was good apart from the egg being slimy. When we checked out we had to ring a bell for attention for the girl to appear again to take our payment. If it hadn't been for the mix up over our booking we wouldn't have seen any other member of staff apart from this girl who also ran the bar in the evening. We had no issues with her, she was very pleasant but lacked training and was clearly overworked. We would definitely not stay at this hotel again, we did not feel welcome or looked after which is the very least we expect as paying guests. Collapse

Not a great start to our break to be told on arrival that all chefs left a month ago so no dinner service. Lake view room did deliver the view but bed was a tad tired so sleep was patchy. Breakfast was ok but bacon was always a bit dry. Housekeeping was random. At no point was the room hoovered, towels were left in a mess, bins not emptied every day and toiletries not replaced at all. The lack of dinner service rendered the hotel with a lack of evening atmosphere. The bar service had to be summoned by a bell and with few, if any guests around there was little incentive to stay around for another. Far better to walk round to the corner to the Pub made famous by Beatrix Potter books where locals drank and provided some atmosphere. On the plus side the hotel staff were friendly and trying to make the best of a fluid situation. They provide great packed lunch at short notice when asked one morning and were happy to advise on places to eat. Of these the best by far was the King's Arms in Hawkshead although the Queen's Head in the same village is also worth a visit. The walking in the area is great for softies like us but the hills in the area are not hard core Hellvelyn. The western shore of Lake Windermere is also a great walk and the walk from Hawkshead to Tarn Hows is highly recommended: guide available from the info-newsagent in Hawkshead. Collapse

Short trip to Lakes for walking, the hotel is superb from the great welcome at reception , the room with home made biscuits on the welcome tray and the wonderful breakfast. The staff are excellent and I couldn't recommend Sawrey House enough. We had a lake view with the sun shining on the lake and autumn tints. The hotel is well sited for a walk along Windermere shore and up to Wray Castle and back along Claife Heights (9.5 miles). We didn't have the evening meal, due to my fussy eating, but other guests said it was excellent. Collapse

We have recently returned from a weekend break to the delightful village of Near Sawrey in the Lake District, a favourite with us and returned to Sawrey House Hotel having last stayed there around 4 years ago....what a fantastic hotel it has become! David and his team have renovated the hotel to a high standard without loosing any of its original charm. The room we stayed in was in the attic which was the most delightful room ever. Extremely cosy and welcoming and the bed was so very comfy so we slept like babies on both nights. We stayed on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rate. For Breakfast there was a good selection of fresh fruits, cereal, museli, juices, yoghurts, tea and coffee including decaff tea which we drink. Then a hearty Cumbrian breakfast where you could choose many items to go onto your plate followed by toast. Dinner was a 3 course affair with specials. The food was fantastic and presented really well so you could be mistaken for being in a Michelin starred restaurant. We also took drinks on the patio with exceptional views of the fells. Nothing was of any trouble & when on our arrival we were very late checking in due to the M6 being shut, they kindly offered to keep the chef back so we could have our meal when we arrived. In the end we arrived at 8.45pm - just 15 mins after service ended but we thought this was a nice gesture to 2 very tired travellers. Sawrey House Hotel, David and his staff made us feel really welcome and at home & for that we will be returning very soon! Thank you for making our stay exquisite! Mr & Mrs Golding Collapse

Stayed for three night in room 3.The room was excellent and very clean with good clothes spaces. The heating was good and the bathroom, which looked fairly new was superb. Our room had a view over the carpark which was ok.The staff, especially Carly and the other young lady, who has just started there, were excellent and nothing was too much trouble.Andre in the restaurant and the rest of the restaurant staff were also very good and could not do enough for us.There was a good variety of food to suit most tastes, which was cooked to an excellent standard and the breakfasts were very, very good, particularly the full english. We have stayed here three times now and the standard of the hotel has not changed at all--it is excellent. The location of the hotel is also very good, with good connection to the Windermere ferry which we found very convenient. All in all the hotel and staff were excellent and we will be staying there again, hopefully in the near future. Thanks to David the owner and all the staff for really looking after us. Collapse

I Don't know why you would not stay at this hotel. We stayed here over the Easter holiday and we were very well looked after. All you need is a comfortable bed and good food and it ticks all boxes. Breakfast is absolutely spot on and both of us being vegetarian it's hard to find a perfect breakfast. You have the best views and loads of places to walk to so all round spot on. My tip for here is :- we tried the pub round the corner and also at the hotel and there's not much in price difference but we preferred the hotel as it's much classier feel and a little quieter. As I was on my own I chose to stay in the single bed room. The room was perfect for my needs, somewhere to put all my things and then explore Cumbria. Although my room didn't have a lake view, it was spectacular sitting on the patio and just enjoying the beautiful landscape. I was in awe of the scenery right on my doorstep. The hotel although not in the centre of the tourist area was ideal for getting about and seeing the sites. During my stay; I adventured to Esthwaite water (you can rent a row/motor boat and even rent fishing gear!) and visited Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter - which is practically right next door. I wondered down to Lake Windermere, where I journeyed around by boat and foot. It really was a wonderful day before catching the Mountain Goat shuttle bus back up the hill to the hotel as I was all walked out. All in all, I had a very affordable short break, the staff were so lovely, and made friends with other people staying the hotel. The food at the hotel was amazing, definitely pay for the dinner bed and breakfast deal. For those driving like me, there is tonnes of parking at the hotel. My only complaint is it rained on my second last day and couldn't do more. I will definitely be visiting again. Helpful hint, grab all the pamphlets, and read the lake brochure, it will help you plan your time and really about the Lake District. Collapse
