We just left the Hotel Santa Marina. We arrived in the evening by water taxi which left us a few feet from the hotel. Everyone at the hotel was accommodating making us late night dinner reservations on our arrival and taking care of rearranging our beds to twin after most staff was gone for the day. The hotel is in a great location not far from Rialto and San Marco. It’s in a very quiet Campo which is wonderful when wanting to get away from the crowds. My only criticism is that breakfast was heavy on the sweets. More protein would be good. Would have liked more variety. Collapse

Location of the hotel is excellent, close to San Marco Square and to Rialto Bridge on the opposite side. The Hotel room assigned to us was very clean, great room amenities, I should give the housekeeping staff of this hotel a very high FIVE! The downside is, no English TV channel, felt lost and bored while in the hotel room resting. Front Desk staff are not welcoming, which I think is because of lack of English speaking skills. I asked the front desk how to work the A/C, he explained so vaguely, but we figured out by ourselves how to work it. Breakfast buffet sucks, also, one staff assisting the buffet is not very friendly and does not know English well. breakfast buffet are divided into two rooms, staff did not inform us that there are other buffet tables in the other room. We came out of the elevator headed to the restaurant where it says "BREAKFAST". The room only has two counters that has omelette making machine and a pancake machine (Yucky taste), no coffee machine available, until we asked where is the coffee machine, then, we found out there are more breakfast selections in the other room. Check out was pretty straight forward. Poor check out, no greetings, no salutations! Overall, despite the clean guest room, this is an overpriced hotel and staff has no knowledge whatsoever in the hospitality industry! Collapse

The Santa Marina is a quaint, authentic, typically Venetian hotel. It is perfectly placed between the Rialto Bridge and San Marco Square. It exudes history, having been built on the ruins of an old convent, and the quirky building has a wealth of character. The downside is that one or two of the staff are savage in character, with an attitude that makes Basil Fawlty seem a saint. One guy, Gabrielle, was so aggressive we were convinced he was on something. Having said that the morning receptionists were lovely, the lady in the breakfast room was very helpful, and the porter and room service were efficient. The stairs were a little challenging, but our rooms were clean, spacious and charming. The breakfast room was a little cramped, but there is a lovely terrace overlooking the square. So, excellent location, quaint hotel, staff varying from excellent to incredibly rude - you choose! Collapse

First, the location of Santa Marina is wonderful. You are an easy walk to either St Mark's or the Rialto bridge, which make it easy to wander the streets of Venice without worrying overly about getting lost. (You can use them as landmarks to make your way back to the hotel.) The hotel is very Venetian, with blown glass chandeliers and candelabra, red brocade and wood panelling. On my recent stay I was given a very small room, but at least it had a window and had everything you need. I had hoped that previous reviewers who talked about the condescending and uncaring staff had just caught them at a bad time, but unfortunately that was not the case. People in our group all had experiences with the staff rolling their eyes and in general acting as though they were badly put upon if you wanted to get your room key, drop off your room key or just ask a general question. The only cheerful employee was in the breakfast room happily showing us how to stuff our croissants with chocolate (Yummy!). Sadly, an uncooperative, malfunctioning coffee machine even caused her to become a bit grumpy. This was my least favorite breakfast of all the hotels on our trip, with only 1 coffee machine for the entire hotel. Avoid the omelet making machine if you like eggs, but by all means stuff your croissant! Stay here for the location if you don't care how you are treated by the staff. Collapse

Due to our rooms being flooded in our original hotel we were moved to the Hotel Santa Marina for a night. our room was not in the hotel but in a separate small room off the square around the hotel. Although pretty basic it was comfortable and the bathroom nice with good water pressure in the showers. Only issues were the lack of cooling in the room (hot night) and you cant leave the windows open due to the mosquitos so it made for an uncomfortable night. on the upside the breakfast was great. If i was heading to Venice in the hotter seasons I would ensure the hotel had A/C (not just heating) Collapse
