This hotel has the usual things you'd expect a 5 star hotel to have when you enter the lobby, but that veneer ends there. As soon as you get to your room or have any interaction with the staff, you'll realize what the negative reviews refer to. The rooms are small by European and Amsterdam standards. Your view will most likely be a wall or maybe part of the hotel roof. Reception will make you feel like you're a burden every chance they get. For my experience, the AC did not work in my room and I had view of a brick wall about 10 feet away. The room was small, but you probably gathered that by now. In the morning at 8AM, a cacophony of noise erupted from the halls, walls, and ceiling. Housekeeping and fellow guests began their stampede. Since the door, walls, and ceiling are apparently paper thin, you'll hear it all. To credit guest services, which is what they call their concierge desk I guess, they did agree to move me after waiting until 3PM in the afternoon the next day. That was the end of their staff being helpful. With Marriott Gold, you get breakfast in the restaurant on Saturday and Sunday where we were the first two days. You can also pay alot for this breakfast buffet too. I believe it is 7-11AM on the weekend. If you go during the last hour, be prepared for them to run out of food, plates, and for the coffee/cappuccino machines to break. My girlfriend also got a "hard boiled egg" as clearly labeled, but the yolk was running. Then if you get there close to 11 and stay a few minutes after, they make you leave your table. I saw that in other reviews but didn't believe it. So believe it. The concierge lounge is decent where you get breakfast Mon-Fri. Food is mediocre, but drinks are nice. They gave me wine in my room and I don't drink. My girlfriend said it was terrible. I think giving cheap wine is more of an insult, but also insulting that they did not ask if I'd even want it. At the end of it all, they claimed they charged me less for the prepaid rate I booked than they actually did charge my card so they had to charge the extra city tax which they actually already charged. I showed them the reservation booking which showed they charged more so they asked for my credit card statement to prove they already charged. Of course, I couldn't provide that on the spot. I'll be sure to provide it to Marriott management in my email about these issues. I bounced back and forth on how to rate this hotel. They kind of fixed my room by putting me in a less noisy spot and with a view of the alley with working AC. However, other people have those rooms with the loud housekeeping and all the rooms have paper thin walls. The service outside of that issue negated it all. Considering how high the rates are and how bad the service is, location does not help. They don't care and don't value you. They're a disgrace to Marriott's brand and should be booted from the chain and definitely should not have five stars. In short, there are way better places for the money. If you're on the fence like I was, don't give them the benefit of the doubt. Collapse

We stayed at the Renaissance hotel during Early May. We were disgusted with the condition of the room. We found dirty socks under the bed, a kit kat wrapper and two bottle caps stuck to a piece of used tissue under the TV Drawers. The bathroom smelled like stale Urine, and the floor had numerous hairs scattered over the tiles. The poor girls who clean the rooms look absolutely exhuasted and stressed out, after talking with one of the more pleasant girls we discovered that they are vastly understaffed (probably to save money). This explains why the room was so dirty, the poor room attendants are rushed and from what I could here are abused by there supervisors. All in all the rest of the hotel was great, friendly navigators, and front desk staff. The girls in the Kopel Cafe were very Attentative. The location is great. The only downside was the room cleanlyness, even the corridors looked like they hadn’t been vacuumed in days. Maybe the Housekeeping Manager needs to re-evaluate the way they run the department, as your staff look tired, unhappy and totally overworked. I will not be staying here again. Collapse

2nd visit to Amsterdam and it had to be the Renaissance. Not that it’s particularly amazing, but we know the location which is fantastic. So central to pretty much everything shopping, eating, museums, red light district ! & the canals Our room rate for this visit didn’t include breakfast, or WiFi .....basically, it was just a room with no extras. AMS was heaving with people so the demand for hotels clearly drove the price up, not sure if it was value for money but rooms are clean, beds are comfy and an ok bathroom. We did not experience the hotel breakfast this time, but plenty of good cafes nearby offering a really good breakfast for €6-8. Flavoured Water was provided in the lobby which was a really lovely touch Collapse

Positives: location very central, clean room, well appointed, nice central areas Negatives:noisy on the street, room very small even for a city centre at the price you are paying. Somewhat annoying at check in, we arrived at 3.30 pm and we were informed ‘our room wasn’t ready yet’, not overly bothered by this but we queried what time check in is (3pm) and only at this point was an apology made or the fact this was late acknowledged. An offer of a coffee or drink in the bar would have been nice but merely offered to store our bags while we went out as they couldn’t tell us when the room would be ready. As I said we weren’t too bothered but the initial response made us feel as if we had turned up early rather than them running late. Overall fairly average, probably not the star level expected.
