A budget stay in Ljubljana

I booked a stay at the Radisson for my boyfriend and I as a last minute getaway to Slovenia to enable us to do a multi-country road trip but with the same central base for accommodation each night. I must admit that when booking on Expedia, I didn’t see the information on the location of the hotel. While I realised it wasn’t in the historic city centre, I didn’t spot that it was actually over 3 miles out probably as I was more focused on prices when choosing a property. The Radisson seemed like a halfway house. A familiar brand that was affordable and with a rate that included breakfast. On arriving, it turned out it’s on an industrial estate and right next to the motorway and nowhere near central Ljubljana. That said because we were using it as a base from which to drive to neighbouring Italy, Croatia and beyond, the proximity to the motorway was actually a good thing and you can’t hear it from inside the hotel. Our standard guest room is spacious, clean and had a very comfortable bed, although more than one pillow each would have been good, but that’s a small detail. The shower is excellent and there’s a choice of English TV channels. So for the most part, a good property choice. I would like to note that the reception staff are not very friendly, welcoming or helpful. While they did assist me with scanning some urgent business documents to send to a contact back home, everything else has seemed a bit begrudging and a little too much effort. It certainly hasn’t been service with a smile. One evening after a long day of driving, I called down to reception to order room service. I’m vegetarian and the menu choices are very limited here. I didn’t need the only main veggie meal on the evening menu (a $17 tomato pasta which seems expensive even for room service) so enquiried about the possibilty of ordering off the night menu which didn’t officially start until 10pm but since it was almost 9.30pm and the veggie choices were so limited, I asked if I could order the veggie sandwich and enquiried as to what was in it. I was told they didn’t know as it changes daily and that it was inconvenient for them to try to make this sandwich and that I needed to wait until 10pm. This response seemed a little unreasonable, both in the tone of comment and also it was just a sandwich, not a big ask. The only other option they gave me was to have a salad but they couldn’t tell me what would be in it and yet it would cost around €15. I ended up going to bed hungry and very disappointed with the hotel’s response and lack of flexibility. The breakfast is similar not great. Fine if you’re only here for a day or two, but after five mornings of absolutely identical buffet food with no menu to order off, the choices were dull and not particularly tasty. Overall, I’d say it’s a good base, but not somewhere that goes above and beyond nor somewhere youd really want to spend lots of nights at. Collapse

I always stay with Radisson Blu around the world and had the opportunity to spend one night in Ljubljana. The hotel is very nice including the bar and restaurant. It's modern, clean. Great breakfast and friendly staff. The only thing I really miss is some nice scent/fragrance in the lobby that I experience through my travelling and other Radisson Blu always has it. This is exactly what would bring it into the 5* as I could smell the kitchen odor during dinners at lobby bar instead of a nice fragrance typical for Radisson Blu. Collapse

Although Radisson Blu hotels are rated at least a 4 stars if not a 5 stars hotel, there are obvious short-cuts taken as our rooms do not provide a boiler or tea-coffee making facilities nor do they provide any facial tissues. One has to pay 5Euro to get a kettle in the room?!! At breakfast, they do not provide a toaster so all breads provided are eaten cold! Gladly they provide gluten free bread for my wife but as there is no toaster, they have to be eaten 'cold"?! The location of this hotel is very near the huge City Spark shopping malls and further towards Trznica, there is a fresh produce market with many local "cheaper" eateries. That was where we discovered a quaint Persian outlet called "Parisa" where you can have a mini-buffet lunch for 8.90Euro, serving some delicious kebab, Iranian saffroned pilaf rice, lamb stew and selection of salad & dessert. So the location of the hotel makes up for the inadequacy of this Radisson Blu hotel. Collapse
