The prestigious Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square (formerly The Roxburghe Hotel) is one of the most iconic hotels in Edinburgh and is located in the heart of the Georgian new town. The hotel is within walking distance of Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street and Holyrood Palace. Situated between George Street - the stylish home of the city’s top bars, restaurants and boutique shops - and Rose Street with more traditional pubs and eateries, The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square is ideally placed for your Edinburgh short break.
Many of the Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square hotel’s luxurious bedrooms have views of Edinburgh Castle or Charlotte Square. All rooms have been individually redesigned to complement the unique Georgian architecture of The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square. Inspired by the ‘golden age of travel’, with touch points that include a collection of travel-related paintings and posters, wooden trunks, and antique mirrors. The new-look bedrooms combine wooden floors and leather upholstery with brand new beds and bedlinen, Smart TVs and quirky artwork.
The hotel's new restaurant, BABA, brought to you by the team behind Glasgow's award-winning Ox and Finch restaurant. This mezze, charcoal grill and cocktail bar is inspired by the flavours of the Levant. Early favourites on the menu include chuck-eye steak from the charcoal grill and chicken shawarma served with pitta and plenty of sauces, herbs and pickles.
At the heart of the hotel, The Garden is a spot where guests can sit back and relax, whatever the time of day or night.
This is where you’ll find breakfast being served till 10am (10.30am on weekends and bank holidays); afterwards, we switch to a light, all-day menu of salads, sandwiches and so forth, with a drinks menu that’s inspired by botanical infusions, spritzes and toddies.

Attending a function I have gone to regularly I was interested to see how the changes in management would affect the experience. It was lovely. The hotel, following recent renovations, now feels modern, and the food has improved. I had already visited the Baba restaurant and loved it, their function food was every bit as good if not better (and certainly up a few notches from the perfectly adequate dinner of the past. I now feel I really must visit the Garden restaurant and the spa. These renovations have been a triumph. Collapse

The spa has been recently refurbished and was only just re-opened under the Principal (previously the Roxburghe) and I was unsure whether the facilities and treatments would match up to previous standards. I have visited many spas in Edinburgh (including OneSpa)......and NONE of them come close to this. Although it has fewer spa facilities, it still includes a swimming pool, sauna and steam room as well as a pre- and post-treatment relaxation room, complete with snug (although no reading materials when I went). The best bit by far was the treatment - an extended facial which included head, arm, hand, shoulder, and neck massage (you have to "hug your knees" at the end!) and the products REALLY WORKED. I have an area of constant breakout/redness on my face, but since the facial my skin definitely looks less red and clearer...so much so that I will be booking another one in! My expectations were not only met, but exceeded, thanks to the friendly staff, fantastic massage techniques from my therapist, Tara, and the wonderful and beautiful surroundings I found myself in at the hotel. I wish I could've stayed for lunch in the "garden courtyard", perhaps I will on my return trip! Collapse

Four of us met here for lunch yesterday and were amazed to find the beverage and alcoholic drinks menu was longer than the food menu! This little gem has a conservatory like ambience with lots of comfortable couches, chairs and cushions. A relaxed atmosphere prevails and the service was rather slow to match. If you just want to order a coffee or a drink and spend some time working on your laptop feel free! The food menu is geared to starters, sandwiches and light meals, desserts and delicious cakes. Have to say I was very disappointed with my own meal which was the fennel sausage with broccolini and chilli rigatoni. It certainly was not what I expected. It just seemed to be a plateful of pasta tubes and little else. I couldn't taste the chilli either. Far too many carbs on a plate which really put me right off. However, there were no comments or complaints from the others about their culinary choices and empty plates were duly returned - so it was probably just my bad luck. This was my first experience of The Garden and the Principal Hotel Charlotte Square. I remember it as the old Roxburghe Hotel and the George Street Bar & Grill. It's sure going to be confusing for visitors, guests and locals alike having two Principal Hotels in the city! The other being the Principal Hotel George Street (which used to be the old George Hotel). Yes, I would most certainly return and recommend with the proviso that you should allow yourself plenty of time, be prepared for a very laid back atmosphere with slow service - and do check out the food menu closely! However, by way of compensation, there are cocktails, champagne and other alcoholic drinks galore to choose from. Collapse

We arrived on the 9th of April at the hotel and all we can say is that the entire staff at the Principle on Charlotte Square could not have made our so far hectic day ,due to our trip ,any more beautiful. Judging by a first glance, the sophisticated and elegant but, nonetheless warm environment and the location of the hotel (close to all the main attractions)made our vacation better than we could ever imagine. With regard to the staff ,especially Mrs Dimitra (Dimitra Damianaki) and Mrs Joy(Joy Stockley) who helped us with everything during breakfast , could not have been any more professional and welcoming, giving great attention to detail and ensuring that our stay was an enjoyable one . In addition, the colorful and old-style with an innovative turn environment provided a great alternative for indoor leisure time and a great number of facilities.Ιn brief,an brilliant establishment, with great people laying the foundation for a exemplary hotel. My husband and I stayed at this beautiful hotel for my birthday. The staff were excellent and so friendly, best I've experienced in a hotel in the UK. Even although you are right in the centre of Edinburgh, inside the hotel you would think you were in another country. Each area of the hotel is decorated differently and expertly done. We ate in the Baba restaurant and it was wonderful. The room was beautifully decorated and the tuck box supplied was great. Just lovely touches everywhere including a record player with a selection of vinyl! I would definitely return and would highly recommend this hotel to everyone. Collapse
