Paris Birthday Trip

My husband booked a four day trip to Paris for my birthday at The Normandy Hotel. He chose the hotel because of its location (near the Louvre) and the fact that it was a four star hotel and on its own website it looked beautiful. Old and grand. After he gave me my present at the end of January I went on their website and then onto TripAdvisor. The reviews for the hotel were dreadful but we decided to go with it and give it the benefit of the doubt as we couldn't believe it could be so awful from the pictures on their site. Unfortunately it really was. It was easily and without doubt the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The lobby itself initially doesn't look too bad but on closer inspection everything looks tired and shabby. There is nowhere comfortable to sit. The bar is old and dismal and was closed for most of our stay. I have to say the reception staff and particularly the concierge were very nice and helpful. The room itself was appalling. Small, old and very shabby. The paintwork was all chipped everywhere. The wardrobe door wouldn't stay shut as the hinge was broken and had no catch on the front. The bed was small and uncomfortable. It had just sheets and a blanket, no bedspread or valance and the pillows were not much thicker than the sheets. No tea or coffee making facilities and no minibar. The bathroom was not much better although it was as clean as it could be. None of it at all replicated the photos on their website. Breakfast the next morning was just awful. The dining room is small dark and depressing. The breakfast spread itself would have been quite nice if everything was replenished regularly. We had to wait 10 mins for a glass to have orange juice. When we got in there, there were the dregs of scrambled egg and bacon which were not renewed in the 30 odd mins we were in the room. There was no bread left for toast, no cheese, no croissants and one of the waiters had to go the bakers to get some more french bread. On that occasion I had a bit of french bread and jam for my meal. We didn't bother the next day and on the last day we popped in for a coffee (which had run out) and it was exactly the same so we left and went elsewhere. We had a wonderful time in Paris but it was marred by the fact this hotel was so bad. There is no way this hotel should have four stars. Collapse

This hotel probably 20 years ago used to have a nice golden french interior but now it is very outdated and not hygenic in terms of carpet throughout the entire hotel. The reception staff was very rude in their manner of communication unfortunately.. wont ever return or recommend.. Collapse

The hotel is very central to all the main sights of Paris (Louvre, Orsee, Notre Dame etc). The RoissyBus from the airport drops you to Opera and then it was a short walk to the hotel, through a nice shopping district. The hotel isn’t very modern but full of character. The rooms are big but not soundproof, a bit warm which meant if we had the window open, we had a lot of noise from the road below. The bathroom was airy and big, with toiletries provided. There was a smart tv in the room but obviously all of the channels were in French. There isn’t any tea/coffee making facilities in the room which is a bit annoying. The breakfast provided at €12 per person has room for improvement. In general the hotel was good value for money we paid for 2 nights and it would be hard to find a hotel in this location for the price paid. (On a final note, there is a Mc Donald’s on the doorstep and also Le Café de la Régence has really nice food, also very close to the hotel). Collapse

We liked staying at this hotel as it was close to many of the things that we wanted to see in Paris. Most things were within a 20 minute walk (Louvre was closer, abt 5 minutes, Musee D'Orsey was about 20). This hotel is older (the only reason for the 4 star rating and not 5 is that I do think an update would make this hotel spectacular! it has everything else going for it!) but I thought it was still good for the price. We could have paid more for a hotel further away from everything. That costs you more in the end. For us the breakfast was included but you will want to make sure it is apart of your price because they will check to see if your name is on the list before they let you in. The food was pretty good (meaning better than any hotel food I have ever eaten stateside) which saved us money. The bath tub was great! Nice and deep, just what we needed! And just to cover this, we did not have any bed bugs (we looked everywhere just in case due to some of the other comments). The staff were nothing but friendly and we did not have any problems with that. We had 2 safes in the room and we used just one of them and our money and passports were safe. Some people don't use the safes but I always do. The mini fridge was also very nice in the room and helped us keep our French cheese cold! The bed was also comfortable. We caught a bit of the cold before we got to Paris so we spent a bit more time in bed than we would have wanted so the comfort of it was great. Collapse

I enjoyed staying in this hotel. It was in walking distance of the Louvre, Tuilleries, Angelina, and many more sites that we wanted to visit. The room was nice with a small balcony. And the bathroom was spacious with two sinks and a very deep tub. There was plenty of room to move around with 3 people in the room. My only complaint was that the buffet breakfast wasn't as plentiful as I have experienced at other hotels and we at one point had to wait for a table because the room is pretty small. Collapse

The five star review is really due to the staff and the hotels amazing location! Our room was large, quirky, and a little weathered but with a charming lay out and some lovely vintage furniture. We looked out onto an inner courtyard type thing, so no real view to speak of but it was very quiet. The staff was wonderful at check in and check out and great when we had questions. The location is perfect, surrounded by shops, a market and restaurants and of course right next to the Louvre. There is a metro station right around the corner (maybe a 3 minute walk away; it's very close). The breakfasts in the morning that came with our package was perfect. They had the same things every morning with plenty to choose from so I never got bored with the food. The dinning room was always well staffed (I think I was most impressed with them), they were constantly running around refilling, checking things, helping people and the food was perfect to start our days. If/when we return to Paris in the future I would love to stay at the Normandy Hotel again! If you're considering booking this hotel and you're okay with slightly-shabby-in-places-but-otherwise-fantastic-service-and-location, book it!! (We stayed at the Normandy Hotel in March 2017, not May, but that's all it would let me choose) Collapse
