Thought we would give this place a go for an Afternoon Tea through a Groupon offer. Reading some of the reviews we had high hopes. Sadly not up to our expectations. Started off badly with a pot of ‘instant’ coffee which we quickly changed to a pot of tea. Sandwiches were ok nothing special, again scones and a couple of cakes just ok. We were the only ones there, no one came to check on us or offer us a tea top up. On the way out the girl on reception didn’t even acknowledge us. It’s a real pity as this hotel is very picturesque and could have been a wonderful experience on a lovely sunny afternoon but it wasn’t to be! Collapse

When you drive in it is very picturesque. That’s the good part!! This hotel should not be currently open for business as there are so many areas that require maintenance, repair or replacement. Ceilings are down in first floor hallways, our bedroom ( oriel four poster room) ceiling looked like it was next to fall down having a huge split which has clearly occurred since their professional photography. Our bathroom , which was smaller than most cloakrooms, had no wash hand basin and the whirlpool bath facility had long since given way to the necessary repair that is not being carried out. The shower is a mixer tap without wall fittings or shower screen/curtain etc! and the condition was quite disgusting. Bedroom Heating ( if required) was provided in the form of a small industrial garage fan heater! The advertised flat screen TV is in the room but it would be better off inside a dolls house as it was so small and possibly 10 years old. We were provided with one shower gel, one bath towel, 2 t-bags in a little bowl, 3 little milk cartons and a tiny camping kettle. No bottled water or fridge! Bath robes were not in the room and when we requested more towels and the robes we should have had, we were advised that there should have been a courtesy bottle of wine in the room as well, although they then changed this to a choice of robes or wine? Either way, we didn’t get any of each! Curtains did not hang properly with tie rings missing and Christ knows when the room was last cleaned properly. The executive room status was somehow reinstated the following morning as the benefits we did not get on the first day were now in the room and included a bowl of two aged apples and one orange, house wine, coffee maker and ice bucket. I did not get a refund for not having these benefits on arrival and nor did I ask. Breakfast was very good on the first morning with full service, however the following morning was much busier and it became a self service.it was a complete shambles with hot food consistently running out and very cold plates on which to put it.It’s such a shame as it could be so much better. The receptionist did say that refurbishment works are planned and long overdue and I think until these works are carried out, it is terribly unfair for paying guests to suffer the disorganisation of the issues that this building and room facilities clearly has. If the management wish to contact me to discuss the issues, they have my contact details and I would welcome their call, although somehow I do not expect them to take me up on this but put a standard reply along the lines of ‘we note what you say and will endeavour to make the necessary adjustments etc’. Wouldn’t it be a nice surprise if they were to actually make contact though.....we’ll see? Collapse

Where to start! I’ve never known such a shambles in my life. I went to an organised event, Waiters in the buff?? There was one teenager that left after half hour, never waited on us as advertised, there were poor kids left to run this event on their own, general manager was no where to be seen, then after the poor kids were torn apart by disgruntled guests he decided to come in & shout at the staff! One poor girl was crying her eyes out whilst she was waiting on tables. There was 110 people in the mill & one young lad behind the bar, he was working his hardest but then fuelled the fire as he had to shut the “only” bar to restock it, mid event! The toilets were filthy, the hotel was shabby & seen better days! The night would have been a complete write off had the food not have been the highlight by the one & only chef that was in the kitchen, cooking for 110 people. I take my hat off to him & the young kids working there! General management really should hang their head in shame. If this event had of been free, I would still have demanded a refund. From the amount of people complaining tonight, I’m sure I’ll be the first of many! Collapse
really bad - you should be ashamed of yourselves - check out these picutures.

So - the hotel were very keen for me to pay on arrival. I now know why - if I paid on checkout I wouldn't have paid! This hotel is very run down - I honestly have never stayed in a hotel this dirty before. The carpets are ripped and stained heavily. The shower only had 'red hot' temperature so you couldn't use it without burning yourself. You cant turn the heating off, the radiator was off but they have huge pipes running round the entire room. I asked the uninterested receptionist as I had a 4 month old baby and the room was too hot - they told me it turns itself off on a timer at night time - which it didn't. The bar isn't manned so you have to wait ages for someone to come and server you. The noise from people walking around upstairs is loud, I do understand this is an old building so maybe to be expected but the primary function of a hotel is to be able to sleep. You may think I am just moaning but there really is no excuse for the dirt in this hotel - please look at the pictures before you book to stay here. Its very odd as I stayed the next night at a different location in an Accor hotel (think they are the owners of Mecure) and it was spotless and perfect hotel. For info I also sent these pictures to the hotel and was sent an automated 'we are sorry' email which didn't even have my name right. Would really avoid unless you have to stay there which is a real shame as the old building is really beautiful. Collapse

The hotel staff are excellent - really friendly & helpful. Dinner had a great choice of well cooked food - we stayed with friends & everyone really enjoyed dinner on both nights. The choice at breakfast was also great, with the staff happy to let you mix & match whatever you wanted from the menu. As you will see from the photographs, the hotel has an old wing (reported to be haunted - though we saw no ghosts) dating from probably the 1700's as well as a modern wing. The old part has lots of character - the high ceilinged dinning room is fantastic. The modern part is looking a bit tired & in need of some tlc. Great hotel to explore Iron Bridge Gorge from - which is what we did. Collapse
