Had a great weekend in Manchester - there is loads to do: shopping at the Arndale Centre, Trafford Centre, Lowry Outlet Mall. Visited the Lowry Museum and had look around MediaCity. Went to Old Trafford for the football - Theatre of Dreams is a great experience. Stayed at the Mecure Hotel which is centrally located, situated between Canal Street and China Town. Fantastic! My husband and I booked to stay on Saturday as we were in Manchester for a show! First impressions not good £20 car parking charge after paying £170 for one night. On arrival reception was dark outdated and scruffy looking paint chipped off everywhere. The room was no better in serious need of new furniture and a lick of paint the room was tiny and the shower is only suitable for a person under 5ft 4 , again this was scruffy tiles chipped paint scuffed! The air con didn’t work and blew out hot air, there was a humming noise all night and on the 9th floor could hear everything from the street below. The breakfast was very bland and not hot. We checked out asap after a very disappointing stay would not recommend or stay again ! Collapse

The room was dirty with stains on the floor, dust around the room and old ciggaretts shoved between the windows. We arrived at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon, all of the suite rooms were on floor 14 and considering how much you pay for the room, there was 2 breakfast trays left outside a suit door from the minute we arrived and was still there 12pm the next day. Would not stay here again. There was nothing special about the room. Collapse

You never get a second chance to make a first impression A well known marketing slogan and one which Mercury Picaddily would do well to ponder upon . My first impression of the reception ( once I had found it as it is on a different floor to the Hotel Concierge in the entrance hall ) was that it was unstaffed and under pressure Turns out the computer system was ‘down’ This could happen to anyone . However it’s what you do about it that counts Mercure’s 2 receptionists approach was not to tell those of us queuing that there was a problem but to simply ignore myself and the others until it was’ my turn’ I had inferred from the overheard conversation between the 2 people at the reception desk and the the staff that all was not going well. Raised voices and lots of unhappy body language never bodes well ! I was told that I cont check in and that they had no idea when I could do so . No apology . I pointed out that I didn’t want to just stand in reception and was told I could go to the 3rd floor bar and have a complementary drink Not ideal and offered with poor grace by a very irritated duty manager who appeared to be personally affronted by my lack of enthusiasm for this option . Customer service being at the heart of the Mercure experience I asked if someone would telephone through to the bar to let us know when the system was working again . This was the cue for a huge scowl and a raised voice as the duty manager stressed she was a MANAGER and that she was doing her best ….. The only upside of the trip to the bar was that the hotel advertising focuses on the views as a unique selling point and that these are enhanced by floor to ceiling windows, It was indeed an uninterrupted view and very panoramic . I could see Primary, Burger King and thenTravelodge with barely the need to move my head! A glance downwards also allowed me to appreciate the tram stop . (See my pictures so that you too can fully enjoy them too ! ) Eventually (an hour later ) I was able to get to my room . Let’s just say it was mediocre and on the cramped side I ordered room service and there was no room for myself , the staff member and the food tray to easily negotiate getting the food onto the table. I decided to go for the simple choice of Caesar Salad Not too much can go wrong with that …. The Mercury excelled itself in ingenuity I have never seen a Caesar salad like it. No discernible sign of either cos lettuce leaves or Parmesan shavings ( described as Italian cheese in the menu) Definitely not croutons just a few hard crusts It looked as though someone had helpfuly chewed it for me in advance to save me the trouble ! ( see picture which doesn’t even do justice to how soggy it was !) The whole experience was not a good one . Was there anything positive about my stay ? Well They left me a gift in my room . It was a chapped lip balm and to make my stay more interesting they had left it on the floor partially hidden by the curtain ( see picture ) Sadly I think it may actually have been that they didn’t clean my room before offering it to me I decided not to stay for breakfast and was pleased thatVirgin Trains had their lovely Eggs Benedict on the menu on my journey home Collapse

this hotel is right in the centre of Manchester and so well placed if you are visiting the city. its reasonably priced. We arrived after check in time started only to be told there was a problem with their computer systems. there was no back up and so we were sent away (we were told to go for 30 minutes but decided to go shopping so did not return for three hours). when we returned we were told the computer was still down and to go away again. My wife was breast feeding and without our son she was in need of some privacy to express some milk. Staff repeatedly ignored us. We could see them speaking to a manage who refused to come over. in the end it turned out they had a printed list of rooms all along and so could have given us a room. there was no offer of compensation for this error and inconvenience and there poor service from the staff. the consierge was however very helpful the next day, so some of the staff are polite and considerate. The room itself was small and the city view was of some roof tops in china town, It was clean but the tea and coffee allocation was minimal. if you need a base in the city centre it is worth considering but if you want a little comfort for a relaxing trip try one of the other hotels at a similar price.
