We stayed at the hotel as we had a family birthday there and it was also our wedding anniversary, the hotel itself has been beautifully done up, I really can’t fault any of the function rooms we’ve been in (3 in the past 6 months) and the food is great (hotel food) we haven’t tried Marco Pierre whites restaurant. It’s really somewhere I’d feel comfortable booking for a party or wedding, the customer service is great, everyone is so helpful and the speed in which the food came out was very efficient. My only negative for the hotel is we upgraded to a privilege room, and it was large and clean, but it was tired and unfortunately was on Belvoir st so was very loud, I cannot fault how well the hotel dealt with my complaint though, I left really happy all be it sleepy! We have stayed at this hotel in excess of 50 times over the last 8 years. When we stayed in April, we were given the smallest hotel room I have stayed in in my life. On check out, I mentioned how disappointed I was to have been given such a room considering what loyal guests we have been over the years. Not once have we been offered an upgrade or a drink in the bar. In fact, we have stayed on over 50 occasions and we have been asked on over 50 occasions: Have you stayed with us before? The receptionist apologised and said she would note my comments. She appeared to type on the keyboard. We stayed again last week and were welcomed with a dull: Have you stayed with us before? So why have we kept returning, if for neither the personal nor the appreciative touch? The hotel is close to facilities such as shops, station, universities and the theatre. There is always space in the car park and it is cheap. Don’t expect to be welcomed though. Collapse
‘Grand’ city centre stay (except for the wayfinding)

I had a one night stay with a friend on a Thursday in a twin-bedded room at this city centre hotel. It has a glorious 19th century façade but has more of a modern feel inside, with quirky furniture and art sitting alongside older fixtures and fittings. I arrived before check-in but the Reception staff helpfully took me through the paperwork and stored my bags so upon return I was able to pick up a key card and go straight to my room. Reception very kindly provided a map of the city so I could explore it better. The room was clean and nicely decorated, had nice refreshments, and had a decent shower. The beds were very comfortable. Sadly the guest lift wasn’t working so we had to use a very small service lift. There was also something of a maze of corridors and small flights of stairs, sign-posted by slightly battered A4 paper signs, before we reached our room. I did not book breakfast but did use the hotel bar – which was well stocked and had friendly staff. The location is fantastic, only 5 minutes’ walk from both the train station and the city centre and it’s multiple shopping choices – I can heartily recommend Deli Flavour café for a pit stop. Booked and paid for Mercure Leicester The Grand Hotel on Sunday 22nd April via Hotels.com for one night on Friday 27th April. Whilst in Leicester on Friday 27th April (we were attending the Leicester Tigers game and wanted to be local to the ground after the game), we were rang at 19:25 that evening to be told that our room was not available, and had be sold to another person, we were told we could be relocated via a 15 minute taxi drive to another hotel. Last time we stayed at The Grand, we mentioned the noise issues, and reception told us a note had been put on our records to ensure our next visit would have issues. I pointed this out to the hotel last night, to no avail. We were meeting our son, who had booked the same hotel, this time via booking.com, he received the same relocation message. We were eventually relocated to the Holiday Inn Leicester (avoiding the need for a taxi) to find that our son had to pay a £9.00 additional room premium due to Mercure’s in ability to manage room allocations (because he hadn’t paid upfront). Customer service is to be desired. Collapse

We are regular guests at this hotel (7-8 stays a year) and gold level members of the Accor loyalty scheme. We think the hotel is excellent and we are usually very happy with our stays. Our stay on Sunday night was probably the most disappointing of all the times we've stayed here. We weren't offered the upgrade we normally receive as part of our membership level, but it wasn't an issue because we booked last minute and it may not have been possible to organise in the time you had. But the room we had was not up to the standards we have seen previously (room 206). It was small and hot. There were stains on the carpet and curtains and even with the double glazing closed you could hear most of what was happening in the street below. We raised these when we booked out and the girl on reception was extremely helpful and did all she could to help us and waived the cost of parking. This left us with a more positive opinion. The other issue we had was with our complimentary drink, we were charged for the most expensive drink, with the cheapest covered by the voucher, which hasn't happened to us before. I raised this with the member of staff who brought the drinks to us, who hadn't served us, and he explained what had happened and whilst he couldn't reverse what had happened offered us other options which we couldn't take as we were only staying one night. He then went to get his colleague to come to us to apologise. This apology felt forced and not genuine. All of the above feels a bit churlish as we got good value for money for our stay, but as regular guests we know the standards the hotel normally have and felt our stay Sunday was below its normal high standards. This will not deter us from booking this hotel again as we know the standards you normally achieve and we look forward to our next visit. Collapse
