I am currently laid in bed at this hotel and I thought I would share my experience. I went on booking.com and it stated it had rooms for Friday night, I rang the hotel and was met with a very unenthusiastic person. I asked if they had any rooms and he said no, I politely said I can book one on booking.com and stay tonight - he said well if you can drive to us and give us the booking number - it was almost like he was dating me to come and prove him wrong. I booked online and came to the hotel, the chap was standing guard in the reception like he was ready for war as there was a couple arguing with their taxi driver outside the main entrance. I explained who I was and that I had just booked and he checked the system and said nothing has come through, I said here is my booking number. He said okay forget that booking we have more rooms spare. I asked do they do room service and he replied only cold sandwiches. I paid for my hotel room and my sandwiches and an OJ. Room - the room is big but dated. However very comfy bed. Location - Ideal My issues; firstly I would of expected to be met with someone who was a little brighter on the phone, not some miserable jobs worth who lied to me - there is no way of defending him, he lied or was too lazy to check! The sandwich came on dry white bread, no butter and he looked annoyed when I said I had already paid for it at reception as I don’t have any cash. Conclusion: great nice sleep, even though the room is very warm for some reason, staff seriously need an injection of personality, willingness and frankly common decency. I should have paid the same at the local Travelodge / Premier Inn. Collapse

The 'Dunk', as it's known to many locals, is an impressive building in an idyllic pastoral setting but conveniently sited for the motorway network. There is ample parking but little sign of public transport in the vicinity. The hotel remains many of its original features but some parts are looking dated & in need of some TLC. Our first impressions were less than favourable as the server who seated us in the bar & brought drinks & menus then proceeded to ignore us for the rest of the evening. Happily, this seemed to be an exception as all of the other staff we encountered were friendly & efficient. We then tried to read in our room but the lighting was far too dim. We complained to reception & the Duty Manager arrived a few minutes later with a pair of spotlights & explained that the bulbs were 'eco-friendly'. Whist such a policy in commendable, it is essential to provide sufficient light to enable guests to read. Happily, the bulbs were replaced early the next day & we had no further problems with the room, which was adequately furnished with a large, comfortable bed. The breakfast buffet was very good with friendly service & a wide range of hot & cold dishes. The selection of fresh fruit was exceptional, with a couple of excellent fruit salads containing many different berries. The fresh pastries & quality preserves were also worthy of mention. The gym was one of the best we have been to any hotel, with an excellent range of cardio & resistance machines, weights etc. The pool was too warm for our liking but probably fine for those just wanting to relax. The 'thermal' area had an impressive range of facilities but looked tired & in need of the promised refurbishment. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay once our initial problems were resolved & would happily return. Collapse

Had a thoroughly good stay at the hotel, with a clean and pleasant room, good breakfast and good service. It was very busy and understandably the staff were focused on many competing demands but at no time did you feel ignored. The surroundings are very good and though other reviwers make comment over the general upkeep of the hotel I found it far better than my expectations. All in all a good stay. Collapse

Lovely setting, we stayed on a recent sunny day so could make the most of the outdoor seating. We had bed, breakfast and evening meal on a 'Secret Escapes' deal we got great value for money. The only downside is that in order to get back to your room you may have to walk through work conferences as you need to walk through other rooms to get to the stairs. Collapse
