I'm afraid my experience here wasn't great. I booked this hotel as it was close to the train station (about 5 minutes walk) and it seemed preferable to spending more money on a taxi to another hotel on the outskirts of town. The area has plenty of bars and takeaways but it's not the nicest and somebody did have a go at me across the road from the hotel apparently taking offence to my (fake) fur on my coat hood! I checked in and went up to my room about 8pm, not seeing any other person in the hotel other than the receptionist. It was a cold night and somebody had kindly left an electric heater on in the room, however it was so hot I had to turn it off, open the windows and go out for a couple of hours to let it cool down. When I came back I passed the reception desk and said good night but was sadly ignored. I wpuld have gone for a pint in the hotel bar but it didn't look very inviting, there were no other customers, nobody seemed to be behind the bar, and there was a tv on with a shopping channel! The room was pretty average and not as good as it looked in the photos. Although it was a double room the bed was up against a wall so you could only get in/out from one side. It was a fairly comfortable bed but the pillows were awful as they were really thin. The decor was not like the photos and it was rather tired with stains on the carpet and furniture. There was a plastic plate on the wall above the bed where there must have once been a phone, quite a large tv that seemed to be at an angle, and not much space (advertised as having a desk but it wasn't big enough to work on). The light over the sink didn't work and it was thick with dust, as was the bed headboard, window sill and many other areas of the room. The bathroom walls also had dirty marks on them and there were hairs on the floor in both rooms, and horrible looking white stains on the bed throw. When I checked out in the morning nobody bothered to ask how my stay was. Very disappointing as the description makes it look much nicer. For the sake of saving a few pounds I wouldn't recommend it, next time I'll use the Premier Inn as you know the rooms are clean and you're going to get what it's advertised as. Collapse

Very good stay. Clean, friendly and very efficient. An old building but tastefully modernised. The staff were first class and very helpful. Plenty of variety on breakfast buffet. Reasonable priced for town centre

To start with this is a old dated hotel that's had a lick of paint here and there to "freshen" it up. Me and my girlfriend booked this hotel for newyears eve and we stayed in room106, first impressions were good although it's the first time I've walked into a UK hotel to a cold room with the windows open. The bathroom is of good standard (it's alot better than the rest of the room which isn't bad quality) although there is NO hairdryer not even the usual poor quality hotel hairdryer and no iron/ironing board so make sure your clothes are suitable to wear out of your case or bring your own. There is a safe and a tv with alot of adjustment so you can view it anywhere in the room while waiting for your partner/friends to get ready. The reason I'm only giving this a 3 star review is the room was let down by small fixable issues that should have been picked up prior to our arrival such as. Dirty and ripped bed linen who ever made this room up either didn't care much for standards or was blind. Ripped curtains (small rip but noticeable) again not hard to replace and it DOES make a difference when your looking at the room as a whole. No hairdryer! Come on even a poor one is better than none at all. Some of the lights not working in the room, poor maintenance again letting you down. And no air conditioning not that in December you'd need it but in the summer months this room would get HOT fast as your windows/view is of a back service area with very little actual chance of getting cool fresh air and if you could the noise from the service area would keep you awake. I don't think I could give this hotel a lower rating as that would not be fair at all but if you fixed the issues it could have easily been a 4 star review and not a 3 star one! Your saving grace here was your staff, friendly approachable and polite they really did save you from a bad review you should thank them! Would I book here again? Probably not. Sorry. Collapse

Avoid this place for Christmas dos.!!! A group of us booked the Motown party night on Friday 14th December 2018. On arrival Anthony's bar was closed downstairs so there was nowhere to wait and get a drink. We were directed up to the ballroom and the staff were still setting up despite it been advertised as arrival from 7. Our group were denied one of their PAID for drinks package until after the main course had been served. Maybe this was a ploy for extra bar sales as they ended up buying 3 extra bottles of prosecco at £27.50 each. ( A different type of prosecco was served each time). The vegetarian option was absolutely terrible. It was advertised as a cheese and onion tart but what was served was dry flakey pastry with a small amount of cheese on accompanied by a few dried up vegetables. We will not be returning here next year!!! Collapse
