A beautiful hotel but lacking modernisation

I feel like three stars for this hotel is too little but I feel like four is too much. I booked via the Accor Hotels website, to which the description stated that it was a Grade 2 listed building, so I was expecting this old, rustic look to it. But the photos showed these beautiful and modern fitted rooms, and then I was placed in one that was very old, nothing like the photographs at all. Especially after paying all of the money that I did for the weekend. Yet in contrast to this, I had a very beautiful bathroom. Especially compared to some of the photos I've just seen on these TripAdvisor reviews! Apart from that, the hotel staff were very cheerful and attentive. But one thing I found was that the first night I was there, there was a wedding on and therefore the bar seemed to be prioritising the wedding guests. I know it was a special occasion and they've probably spent a lot more money than myself but I felt it should have been equal. It wouldn't have been too bad if the service had have been a bit quicker but if I think about it, there could have been a technical problem with the card machine or something. But for one pint it cost £4.40 which I thought was a little steep! One final negative comment was that I purposely didn't bring shower gel or shampoo as I know Mercure hotels supply their own. I had a shower just before going to sleep, and another one when I woke up the next morning, and ended up using each bottle. I threw them into the bin just to inform the cleaner I had finished with them, and they'd taken the bag away but not replaced the shower gels. It took a trip to reception to get some more put in my room. Which I know is only a minor inconvenience but it's one of the things I thought would just be standard. Apart from that, the restaurant was a very nicely laid out, and had a nice view of the hotel gardens from the window. Breakfast was also very nice. I think overall, the hotel needs quite a lot of refurbishment work doing to it. It's a beautiful building with gorgeous gardens and overall is in a great location, but I think the rooms are quite old and run down and need some TLC. And I mentioned my room was small and old fashioned but I will add here that it suited me as all I wanted overall was a bed as I was out all day each day. And in that respect I would stay again, but I also do feel like it was quite expensive for what I actually got. Collapse
Not bad at all

We stayed here for our sons wedding and I must say we were impressed with the hotel. The setting is lovely, perfect for wedding photos, the welcome was lovely and our room comfortable . All in all, a very good experience.

Nice rooms and breakfast, food overpriced and small portions

This hotel stay has been quite good, the room (which was upgraded by us for an extra £10, which we definitely recommend as the rooms looked small) was spacious and had nice decor. The breakfast buffet was lovely and had a lot of choice, and the fields opposite the hotel were nice too. The food is overpriced however, we ordered a sandwich and chips with a drink that came to £12.50,the sandwich was incorrect, and they tried to charge us more saying it was a panini, and the chips were supposed to be triple cooked but we're definitely not, and to add to that you literally got a handful of chips (see photo) which was a bit mean,so not too great. Room service costs £5 by the way. The grounds of the hotel (at the back) were not as big as we thought from pictures but there you go. An overall good stay, but the place needs updating, as many other people have said, they need to spend a bit of money on it. Collapse

Had to stay in the Burton on Trent area and on a tight budget. The Premier Inns were all booked up so this Mercure was the only one with decent reviews and not at an outrageous price. So it was OK. Interesting old building but in need of a bit of a refurb. Room at the back is nice and quiet, if a bit pokey. Cleanliness was OK but they need to pay more attention to detail (grime behind the toilet; hook hanging brokenly off the bathroom door). Breakfast decent and substantial. Staff superbly helpful - I had a ton of deadlines to work on and they let me stay in the bar area in the afternoon after my checkout time, providing extension leads etc. Would have given 4 stars except for one point which really annoyed me. I booked through Tripadvisor and on this website the hotel details quite clearly include:- "Business Centre with Internet Access". Well it doesn't...... and given my previous comment about a heavy workload you will see that is one of the reasons I booked this hotel. I was most put out when I arrived and was told there was no business centre (by two separate staff; I kept asking because I didn't believe it the first time). The staff did their best to make up for it but you really should not advertise facilities you don't have. Collapse

I stayed here last week on Thursday night for a work trip. Couldn't sleep until after midnight because my room was above the wedding disco. I am hard of hearing, and even without my hearing aids, it was unbearably loud. Then on checking out, I was charged £10.45 for the one glass of wine that I'd had with dinner the previous evening. Needless to say, I will not be staying here again! Collapse
