The Hotel has a 4* rating, how it got this I don't know, the place is jaded and could do with a complete overhaul and renovation. The carpets either need completely renewing or at least a very good deep clean. There was no Fridge or Mini-Bar in the room also no safe, the magnetic room-keys malfunctioned. I booked 2 Twin Bedded Rooms and receive an e-mail confirmation from the hotel as such, but upon arrival one of the rooms only had 1 bed in it. There were only one set of towels in the room (for twin occupancy) The cost of drinks at the Bar(s) were extremely high. To make matters worse a note was left in our room that they couldn't make up the room that day for whatever reason, so not only the beds were not made up there were no replenishment supplies, toilet paper, tea/milk (had to go out and buy my own) and shower gel/shampoos. Note: This Hotel seems to principally cater for Wedding Receptions etc and not as a Hotel to stay at. I could go on with numerous other comments but suffice to say of all the hotels we stayed in not only in the UK but around the world this is definitely one of the worst Collapse
Pleasant but should be better for the price

We stayed here whilst my husband was taking part in a football competition. The hotel has recently been refurbished and there is a pleasant ambience in the reception area. The provision of complimentary fresh fruit and water in this area is a nice touch although I think that water should also be provided in the rooms. Our room was very pleasant though it lacked storage space. The bathroom was fine. There was a large shower, the power of which was ok but not that strong. If I’m honest I would have preferred a bath particularly in a premium room but the shower was fine. Toiletries were provided on the first night of our two night stay but not replenished. The towels were poor - thin and not pure white. A hotel of this standard should have luxurious towels so regardless of recycling claims for me this was simply not good enough. The staff on reception were helpful but a mistake was made with our bill. The restaurant was fine with a pleasant menu. That said, the cost of food was relatively high for what it was. The bar and waiting staff were generally very young and the service in the bar was particularly slow. The tables in the restaurant were a bit sticky and the seating in the bar shabby. I think this may have been intentional (shabby chic) but it didn’t really work. Some of the seats just looked as if they’d been ripped! The breakfast buffet was fine though the scrambled egg was very rubbery and the bacon undercooked on both mornings. There is a car park - the spaces are very tight so it’s difficult if you have a large car. The cost of this is £10.50 per night. There is a gym and swimming pool situated in an adjacent building. Had we had more time, we would have investigated this. Overall, I think the cost of this hotel is high given the various points made. When I return to Bristol, I think I will explore alternative options. Collapse

Stayed for 2 nights on B&B basis. Check in was quick and easy, the receptionists being very friendly and helpful giving lots of advice about the area. Our room was large, modern and very comfortable and being on the rear of the hotel, very quiet. Bathroom looked almost new, spotless with lovely toiletries and excellent powerful shower. All the common areas had lovely decor and were very clean and well kept. Breakfast buffet style was lovely with plenty of choices from the cold table and full English hot cooked food. The location in the heart of the old town was brilliant with lots of bars and restaurants nearby. Car park was next to the hotel and reasonably priced at £10.50 per night. Downside which has been mentioned on lots of reviews is the tight spaces and corners, not easy for very wide or long cars. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend. Collapse

Stayed one night as attended a conference in the same hotel. Our conference website and various hotel sites suggested the Mercure Grand was a luxurious spa hotel. I had a single room which was small and very basic, and the bathroom very dilapidated- ripped window blind, shower curtain hanging off, rust around bath. Had to go hunting for the pool and spa as no signs, and had not been informed at check in or in the hotel literature that it was in a separate building round the corner. Pleasant enough but more like a leisure centre than spa, small pool surrounded by jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. Given one small towel to use. Not enough mirrors and hairdryers for the number of clients there, and mirrors so dark couldn’t see to do my make up. One solitary staff member kept nipping into disabled changing room to do their hair, so I witnessed one client unable to collect a towel and locker key! Staff were always pleasant, and hotel fine for a short stay, but think if you were booking for a luxury short break you would be disappointed. Collapse

Would have given this hotel 4 stars if it wasn't for the terrible customer service we experienced after complaining about our awful breakfast. Us four senior ladies stayed here for our annual get together on 8th and 9th of May. I had recently become an Accor member and had booked the hotel so I felt responsible for our enjoyment. Check in was fine and staff were friendly. Our room (156?) was certainly not spacious as advertised on the website. If I needed the bathroom in the night I would have needed to squeeze past the industrial style wardrobe unit to get round the bottom of my bed and then shuffle along the bottom of the two beds because of the protruding TV (not possible to walk normally). However Reception quickly moved us to a much better room (awful outlook but the curtain masked this and we were not worried about it!). Also disappointed that the swimming pool is not in the hotel but round the corner in a side street so not possible to wander down to it from your room in a dressing gown, but necessary to get dressed to go to it. However overall happy with the general decor and feel of the hotel. Beds were comfy and room was fine (although I would expect a 4 star hotel to provide tissues and possibly dressing gowns). We had the buffet breakfast on the first day. This was adequate with a choice of fruit, hot food, cereals, yogurts, cheese, toast and pastries and fruit juice. We were impressed with the supply of Actimel yogurts. I expect to have my tea/coffee order taken at and delivered to the table in a 4 star establishment. Instead we had to queue for hot water from an urn to make our tea with a teabag. The second day we decided to ask for the "cooked to order" breakfast. Disaster from the beginning. About 10 minutes after ordering we were told that there was no haddock. Fair enough but 10 minutes to find this out. Shouldn't staff be briefed on what was not available?? Then another long wait for the food. Then one Eggs Benedict arrived. It was only lukewarm but my friend didn't want to complain. Then my Mushroom Omelette and another Eggs Benedict appeared. My omelette was more like a thin Frittata - but very brown on both sides, not light, fluffy and yellow. I though it had been put under a grill to keep warm but was told later it was only cooked in a frying pan. The chef must have put it in first before he started cooking the other orders because it was so well done! The second Eggs Benedict was also cold and the sauce was much too vinegary. My friend had one mouthful and left it. The poached eggs on toast then arrived (replacement for the haddock order) and the toast looked like it had been in the toaster for about 10 seconds. My friend tried to catch one of the serving staff's eye but they seemed to be busy doing things behind the bar or cleaning tables. Meanwhile the rest of us finished our breakfast as we were on a tight schedule that morning and had opted for an 8:30 breakfast for an early start. No staff had name/title badges so we asked one young girl who had served us if we could speak to the Restaurant Manager. She went out the back and a young man came out (didn't introduce himself but I don't think he was a manager). He apologised and asked if we wanted fresh breakfasts cooked. He said he would let someone know we were not happy. We declined fresh breakfasts and waited for a manager to come out and offer an explanation for this terrible breakfast. No one came so we got up and went out. In Reception we saw a smartly dressed young lady in a uniform. We recounted our story and said we wanted an explanation. She said the Restaurant Manager had a meeting at 10am and that was probably why he had not come to see us. She promised to take our complaint to the meeting and update us later. We checked out and left our cases in the storage room. When we returned at lunch time I asked Reception for a progress report on our complaint. She replied that the Restaurant Manager had been made aware of our complaint. I waited for her to continue to explain the reason eg staff shortage, inexperienced staff etc but nothing. No apology, no thanks for drawing the matter to the hotel's attention, nothing. We were not after a free breakfast which seems to be the only reason why the management dismissed our complaint. I have always found hotels are normally very happy to have shortcomings drawn to their attention. On this occasion I was very disappointed with this total lack of customer service and management leadership. Definitely not a 4 star experience and would not stay her again if this is the way complaints are handled, in case we had a more serious problem that would not be remedied because of non existent management input. I have no problems with the staff - everyone tried to be helpful and friendly, except, it would seem, the managers! Collapse
