We're just back from a disappointing overnight stay at the Mc William Park Hotel. For my mother's 90th birthday we asked her what she'd like as a present. All she wanted was to visit Knock once more and to stay in a 'nice hotel'. Well at least we got the visit to Knock right. The hotel certainly wasn't. The hotel itself is ok. It claims to be a four star hotel (I often wonder how long ago these hotels were awarded four stars). The problem is that the hotel is located about 15 minutes from the Knock shrine and I imagine that it just doesn't have to try very hard to attract it's clientele. It's not like there are masses of 4 star hotels in the area so it's easy pickings. So what's wrong with it? A number of things but the food is the main culprit. We arrived for our evening meal at 18:45 fairly famished after a day in Knock. While we weren't expecting a gourmet meal we were expecting a good standard of food. What we actually got was 2nd rate carvery style food. Both myself and my wife have worked in the food industry for over 25 years and the food presented to us was cheap, nasty, required very little prep work, pile-it-high, bog standard carvery food. My father had to send his main meal back as a request he asked for was not adhered to. When it arrived back minutes later it was the same food with the same offending sauce just wiped off the plate. Well we could have done that. He ate it. He just said 'lets not cause a fuss'. His 90 year old wife struggled to eat 1 single piece of her beef saying 'it's as tough as old boots'. We also seemed to have arrived back in the 1980's as the vegetables to accompany the meals were: diced carrots, peas & swede. You know the type. You buy it into restaurants that do carvery food in huge bags and boil it up and dish it out. Classy. If you went wild and ordered a 'salad' to go with your meal you were given a side dish containing a few leaves and some coleslaw. Yup the 1980's are back but not in a good way. My vegetarian option (the ONLY option) of pasta in a tomato sauce (yes the type of food you'd make a 6 year old for lunch) was stone cold. It was also sent back. Imagine my surprised when it arrived back minutes later but piping hot this time. Piping hot as it had been stuck into a microwave. That wasn't eaten. I don't eat rubber. The food was removed from the table without being asked why it hadn't been eaten. I'd imagine 60% of our main meals went uneaten. Dessert was no surprise. None of it was 'hotel made'. It was all mass produced carvery food dressed up as decent food. Again, about 50% went uneaten. The dessert menus were extremely tatty laminated sheets of paper that were stained and ripped. To accompany our dessert we got pots of tea and that was the final straw. The tea pots were ancient, damaged and disgusting. The inside of the pots were black. Those pots haven't been cleaned out properly for a long time. So this is four star? Really? When was that awarded? The 1980's again? We spoke to a group of American guests who said the food on their plane over from the USA was better than the hotel food. We felt so hungry that once our parents went to bed we drove into the local town and ate in the local fast food place (Supermacs) and the pizza we got was a lot better than the food at the hotel. Other points to note: The temperature in the hotel is unbearably hot. The rooms, the bar, the restaurant - all are too hot. We shared a lift with two hotels guests that thought they were going to pass out with the heat. Rooms were too hot to sleep in even with the windows open. The rooms require a good paint job and upgrade. It looks like the bathrooms were upgraded but not the rooms. Is it all bad? No. The location is great - again only 15 minutes or so from Knock. Most of the staff we dealt with were friendly and pleasant. The hotel accommodated us by giving a loan of a wheelchair which we appreciated. It was generally clean but requires an updating. The pool area looked great - but we didn't have time to try it out. Our advice would be: if you are planning to stay at the hotel, just avoid the restaurant and go eat in Claremorris itself which is just minutes away for car. When we went to check out the woman doing so was lovely, apologised and even offered us a free return visit which we turned down. We give one chance and if you can't get it right we never return (we were due to return with a bigger group later in the year - that won't happen). Perhaps if more people did the same then the Mc William Park hotel would try just that little bit harder to impress their guests and not take them for granted. Collapse

Called here for our evening meal as we had been to Knock and we were not going to be home until one o'clock.I had a meal her a few years ago and really enjoyed but very disappointed in the portions this time I ordered a chicken Caesar salad as a mains and all I got was lettuce a small amount of bacon ,chicken and a few croutons. As there was cucumber and peppers etc.in the side dressing of the dishes my husband and daughter got they gave them to me otherwise I would have been starving. My husband three boutons of fish and a very small portion of chips.Definitely well below what we expected from this hotel. I would like to thank the Management & staff of the Mc. William hotel Claremorris. 6 of us (3 couples) stayed there on Sunday night August 6th. All 6 of us were so impressed from start to finish, I felt I should write this review. From the receptionists to the bar staff not forgetting the waiters & waitresses in the restaurant, they were all helpful, cheerful and so welcoming. This is definitely in our list for a return visit. 2 couples were celebrating their 30th Wedding Anniversary, this venue was perfect for their special occasion. I would definitely recommend this hotel, well worth a visit, you won't be disappointed. Michael, Phil, Martin, Mary, Eugene & Mary Collapse

€10 for carvery lunch is fantastic value. As a Hotel Manager myself I was dubious about the price when I saw €10. I was expecting small plates and a little quantity of food. I was wrong and happy to admit it I arrived here with three colleagues and we all ate lunch, had a few coffees and back on the road. Easy to find, Clean car park and well maintained surroundings. Welcomed warmly by reception staff. Positive and efficient bar staff, quick service, generous portions and nice presented and seasoned carvery. Will most definitely return again when in the area. As I am now at a certain age my life seems to have been taken over by weddings in recent months. So I can spot a bad day a mile away. But I have no complaints about this place. Great meal, lovely function room, good drink, good staff, nice comfortable room. Breakfast the next morning was great, also had someone with me who was not attending the wedding but who ate from the bar menu and it was top notch food. There was also a kids club where my kids went for an hour or two on the day and they enjoyed it. Not much outside the hotel except a carpark, but when you step inside the doors you forget that. Anyone thinking of booking this place for a wedding will not be disappointed. Collapse
