This was a poor hotel more a two star than a three. We wanted to stay around the Peak District and when booking you seemed to have difficulty finding a hotel that would take children which I thought was a little strange. The only one was the Makeney Hall. The hotel was tired both inside and out. Our bedroom was dirty and very dusty bet it still is in our room. This was just a poor experience all round. Overall very disappointed which is a shame as these vouchers were given to me as part of my retirement present. They say feedback is a gift I hope you use this gift wisely. One final point I think there should be some dress code in the restaurant for an evening meal. Is a Manchester United football shirt, trackie bottoms and training shoes really acceptable in a hotel where the bottles of wine start at £20 - I think not! Collapse

This is a beautiful hotel in a lovely setting. Staff were friendly and professional, especially in the bar and restaurant. The venue was able to provide a gluten free breakfast (buffet, £10) which was served in a lovely bright morning room. No complaints really but the room could have done with a bit more love. The fittings were a little dated, one of the chandelier bulbs had been casually replaced with an energy saving bulb that was a mismatch, the carpet had a stain. Nothing dramatic, but needs a bit of TLC. Collapse

I travel a lot and secured a room through secret escapes. It was brilliant value! The best bit was our room, which was really spacious and bathroom was great. Large television and sofa loved it. The drawing room was lovely. Dinner was nice as expected and breakfast was good too. Why 3 stars then, the cooking of the food was average, breakfast a bacon sandwich, over cooked but fine. Most staff really lovely, one waitress just moaned all the time and was forceful (I didn’t want to turn down the bread roll for fear of upsetting her - but it was funny!). If I give 3 stars you’ll be pleased with your visit, if I gave 4 you might be disappointed. I would definitely go back! Free safe parking, free Wi-fi. Collapse

Stayed on a Superbreak 2 days b&b, 1st night dinner and 2nd day picnic. All in all excellent value for money, extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff, couldn't have asked for any more. Room large and well-appointed and flowers ordered by my other half as a surprise were absolutely beautiful and came with hand-written instructions on how to care for them. We stayed for dinner both nights (1st as part of package, 2nd because 1st night was so good). The weather was inclement unfortunately but it didn't stop us visiting the local area retail outlets and mill outlets, beautiful area which thankfully not many know about so easy to get around Collapse

We stayed at Makeney Hall Hotel for one night and loved our stay. After booking our Groupon night away, my partner decided to read some reviews about the hotel and found himself extremely dishearten by the bad reviews and began regretting our booking. Thankfully we were completely wrong to doubt the lovely hotel. Beautiful estate on arrival and staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel itself was lovely and very spacious. We stayed in the Chinese style bedroom which was perfect. Large, Lovely big bath, Brand new TV and a big comfortable bed. The location was perfect for the relaxing getaway we wanted but in good location for a walk to Belper and a 2 minute walk up the hill to a really fabulous local pub! The restaurant food was really a surprise, delicious and full of different flavours. Not a bad word to say about the food at all. We decided last minute to have our breakfast in our room due to how much we liked the room and the staff were very accommodating to our requests. The breakfast was delivered on time by lovely staff members, was very generous and very fresh. All in all, we truly enjoyed our little get away and came away really pleased that we didn't let the negative reviews put us off. Granted it is not a 5* hotel with all modern and new furniture and technology but it is exactly as you would expect a countryside estate to be. Full of character and personality with exceptionally comfortable beds. Would definitely return for another mid week night away. Collapse
