Excellent location next to the Conference centre. The Majestic Hotel suits its name in the grandeur, but the rooms are looking a little tired and would benefit from a makeover, although the comfort and size couldn't be faulted. The staff were helpful and pleasant, but they could certainly do with more. We had a 45 minute wait before being seated for dinner. Excellent food. Collapse

The Majestic where we stayed was grand in parts but needed a lot of TLC in other parts. The room was clean and the food was good but the service in the restaurant was absolutely awful. The wait for food was unbelievable, the orders were wrong and some of the staff didn’t seem as if they could care less. One morning there was no cooked breakfast but no one thought to let the guests know the reason why and I got the impression that we were not worthy of an explanation. I doubt we would stay there again. We did take a bus ride to Knaresborough and we really liked that visit. Also as the weather was bad one day we went to Ripon to see the cathedral. We were pleased we did that. The bus was free for us and the journeys were not too long. Collapse

Made last minute booking for special dinner, bed and breakfast rate for husband and myself for New Year’s Eve. Check in was fine and reservation made for dinner for 8:30pm. When we came down for dinner we were told no restaurant as there was a function on. Ended up just the two of us in a large cold bar area eating pub food, not impressed. Collapse

Despite a number of adverse reviews we were pleasantly surprised! The staff were very helpful and polite, explained everything we needed to know on check in. The room was a reasonable size and clean and bright. The bathroom was in need of refurbishment but still serviceable for our needs. The breakfast buffet was fairly extensive and very enjoyable. The refurbishments taking place in the hotel were very obvious but not intrusive in any way. Overall an enjoyable stay. Collapse

There was so much wrong with this hotel that I will actually have to bullet point it: - Check in was extremely awkward and nothing about the hotel was explained to us at all we were just given a key to our room once we gave in our name, we were hoping to learn where everything was and possibly book in for an evening meal, we weren't even given breakfast times or told about leisure facilities. - £8 car parking fee, why? The car park is huge and staying with you is enough expense already considering how dated and damp the place is to then throw on a surprise charge. - Room service was HORRENDOUS, ordered a steak medium rare and it came cremated, ordered artisan bread and it was rock solid! - Booked the spa, it was the most awkward experience of my life! A running theme through this hotel with the staff! They are all wooden and awkward, not a smile in sight. We had hoped it would be a doubles massage as we had come as a couple and chosen the £79 package which included 2 25min treatments, robes and afternoon tea/ lunch. We asked for the robes which we were not given as we were told we would get them upstairs! We had our massages in separate rooms (which in fairness were fabulous massages) but 100% not 25 minutes each as we started late and finished early so that was a let down! We were then escorted like criminals upstairs to pay for our massages and at that point when we asked for robes we were questioned why we wanted them and if we needed them and then reluctantly handed the two most tatty 10 year old purple robes ever. - The lunch menu was terrible and had ONE hot sandwich option on, when we went and got it the chips were rock solid and chicken terribly dry. As we had such a bad experience we were looking forward to being asked at checkout how our stay was so that we could voice our concerns there and then. However, we instead had our key snatched from us and were hurried out without so much of a bye let alone a 'how was your stay' they must have know that probably 99% of people who stay there reply to that question with 'terrible'. I would never normally even write a review, I am not that type and I don't generally have the time but I am so appalled by this hotel and how much I spent there for such a terrible experience that I feel I owe it to the world. DO NOT STAY HERE!! Collapse

A magnificent edifice commanding respect from the ground up in a great statement of Victorian grandness and vogue. It’s cavernous corridors and imposing vestibules with striking columns supporting the high ceilings scream out the panache of the period. Monolithic staircases leading to commodious landings substantiate the grandeur and splendour fully intended to infiltrate the senses of all who enter within. Then reality strikes! Having paid for a Premium room we were shocked and aghast at the room we were allocated. This first floor insult looked untouched since the Victorian/Edwardian period! Were these people serious or was this some kind of sick joke. The dark and dour decor conspired with the heavy drapes and brown furniture to create instant depression. A table top was scored and scratched to a degree far worse than furniture I have put on the tip! I imagined discovering either a mummified corpse or Miss Havisham had I dared to investigate! Absolutely totally unacceptable and quite unforgivable of staff to try this con! One couldn’t and did not expect perfection in such a old hotel but this was beyond bad! Our quick re-allocation was to the 4th floor into a more spacious, bright room which though tired and rough at the edges might pass for premium. The window, at right angles to the bathroom window, looked onto a narrow ledge which sported a large display of discarded cigarettes, shampoo bottles, soap and a Listerine bottle evidently discarded by previous guests from the bathroom window. A little effort could have cleared this unsightly mess but that level of care was clearly unachievable here. An unpleasant embellishment to a pretty negative outlook. The bathroom was adequate, again close inspection revealed severe wear and tear in places but how could one expect better? Water was tepid to lukewarm at best but we had to shrug shoulders and smile by then. The bed at least was clean and comfortable enough. Breakfast was the only meal we took here and it was nothing past mediocre. Plenty choice and enough for a good full English but the buffet lights were not doing the food any favours. A problem not confined just to this hotel. Good food tarnished. In the room bottled water and tea/coffee was not replenished by the cleaners despite this being a complimentary service. A dusty bedside top remained dusty over the three day stay. The Majestic tells a very tall tale about itself. The scaffolding being erected is the first hint and is the gambit of all complaints and utterings of dissatisfaction. The magnificent fabric is merely a reflection of what used to be. It conceals a myriad of failings which will take some time and much investment, to rectify. Reception staff were unsurprisingly well briefed and careful not to expound any complaint, unconvincingly expressing surprise and denying any previous mention of whatever point or complaint was being made to them. Well they have to don’t they? Our brief contact with other guests did not elicit any favourable comments. The Majestic has lost the right to its name but serious refurbishment (£millions) may pull it back into shape. Currently it is a barn find, a once magnificent limousine, sadly now with three wheels, flaking paintwork and rust, and an engine which has not run on 6 cylinders for a long time. That said it is capable of being restored and brought back to its former glory. I won’t be returning until that status is achieved. I hope I live that long... Collapse
