I was allocated this hotel for a 2 night bed and breakfast stay by the organisation who hosted me. The hotel has the advantage of being a short walk from Picadilly station and is close to Manchester University and the City Centre. The room allocated was at the front beside the busy main road but there was no traffic sound and I enjoyed the spacious feel and the daylight from an enormous window. The bed was most comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and well appointed. So far all good. The hotel was really busy the first day I was there, with coach parties of tourists and airline staff. So maybe I was unlucky as follows: 1. Breakfast check in was inefficient, with a single member of staff ticking off the room number and personally conducting each guest (almost all were single) to the restaurant tables situated quite a way off, then walking back to pick up the next guest. 2. I do not eat a cooked breakfast buffet and sadly was informed that the poached eggs on crushed avocado was finished. The continental cheese and ham selection was meagre indeed. My enquiry for cheddar cheese was met with a negative, so toast and marmalade for me. Breakfast on the Saturday morning was fine, maybe because it was much less busy? I invited a guest back to the hotel for a brief drink after work. An order of a small draft Guinness and a Soda and Lime should be straightforward you would think. Not in the Macdonald Hotel - draft Guiness was off, and they had no lime! They were also unable to charge the drinks to my room or to accept a card payment. I had to borrow cash from my guest. A bit embarrassing, and really the staff behind the bar were not overly concerned either way. That evening I decided to eat in the hotel as it was raining and went to their so-called famous steak restaurant. Not surprisingly on a Friday evening it was full and,as I had not booked, was put on a waiting list. The waitress indicated she would call me when the table was ready. Needless to say no such call was received, so I decided to take advantage of the room-service menu. But how to phone? Nowhere in the room could I find a number to call Room Service or indeed Reception. Eventually I did a web search for the hotel number and phoned reception on my mobile to ask for the correct extension. Success. And yes, the food did arrive and was greatly enjoyed.... Is it me? Or is there an issue with service in the MacDonald Hotel? Would I stay here again? Certainly, as it is good value and well situated. But my expectations around service would not be high. Collapse

The staff (Reception, Housekeeping, Room Service) were unfailingly efficient, good-humoured and did an excellent job. My room was clean, quiet, comfortable and spacious and allowed me to catch up on some much-needed sleep. I even considered staying an extra night as I enjoyed it so much! WiFi was very good at all hours of the day and night. Collapse

Booked panoramic suite, first impression, lovely spacious room, huge bathroom, elemis toiletries, beautiful fluffy towels, & robes, but on arrival tv didn't work no aerial in back, tv remote no back or batteries, maintenance guy came immediately, very friendly & efficient, no socket to plug radio in which couldn't move, hardly any channels on tv? Is that normal? , glass shards all over the carpet, obviously been a glass shattered previously, again house keeping came immediately to Hoover the room, old slipper under foot stool at end of bed, curtains wouldn't close, but absolutely loved the spacious room, the beds were amazing so comfortable had fantastic nights sleep, the staff were very friendly and polite in all departments, reception, bar, housekeeping, loved the box of chocolates & welcome macarons, loved watching the trains coming in, we would stay again as enjoyed the delicious breakfast & other aspects but would hope a suite would be a bit better prepared next time, oh bedside lamp didn't work Collapse

Good bits: We arrived at the hotel on a Friday night without a booking and managed to get a room right away. The executive room was on the 8th floor, has a decent size tv, very spacious with a large power shower and Nespresso machine. The large windows made pleasant views across manchester. Room service was tasty. Comfy bed/pillows with minimal noise at night. robes and slippers were a nice touch, as were the speakers in the bathroom so you can listen to the tv/radio while showering! Not so good bits: TV channels would scramble ever so often, many channels were not available at all. Room service missed things from our order twice and the rest of the time wouldnt answer the phone. Difficult to get anyone from recption or room service to answer the phone or buzz you into the parking lot! Parking is charged at £25/night wihich is extortionate considering London hotels have cheaper parking! - nearby parking lots were much cheaper, but we didnt notice this until it was too late. We arrived at the hotel on Saturday 8th June around 10.30am but check in wasn’t while 3pm. We were told we could pay £20 and get in a room straight away or leave our luggage and check in later. We were staying at the hotel for Parklife festival so decided that we would check in when we came back that night as we didn’t really need to go to the room straight away. When we returned we were assisted by Tom on reception, he was lovely with us and went above and beyond to get us into a better room than we had booked! He gave us a room on the 2nd floor and told us that it was one of the nicest rooms at the hotel. We were very grateful for this as the room we were given was amazingggg! In the room there was a bottle of wine, chocolates, a welcome plate and fresh fruit!! Such a lovely touch! The room it’s self was beautiful and very spacious ! The bathroom had both bath and shower and had Elemis toiletries! Very nice touch! There was also a pair of GHDs in the wardrobe for you to use but unfortunately they didn’t work but I had my own so not an issue at all. There was also a hairdryer in the room so no need to take your own. There was also plenty of towels in the bath room and 2 robes. We can’t thank Tom enough for his kindness for putting us in such an amazing room! He was very kind, friendly and a pleasure to be assisted by! I hope he gets to see this review and knows that he made our stay better than we ever expected! Thank you so much!! We will be back to the Macdonald hotel on our next trip to Manchester! Collapse
