We purchased of the many itison vouchers for Macdonald Cardrona - it is clear now why there are so many vouchers available to stay there. The hotel is very run down, the leisure facilities were missold as a spa but were far from it - spa treatments are impossible to book as fully booked. Rooms are tired with worn carpets and very tired bathroom (the shower was recently installed and was very good) Restaurant was average at best, the earliest time we could book was 8.45pm. Dinner and breakfast were both OK. Staff are clearly mismanaged and do not want to be there. Collapse

Stayed for one night prior to a business meeting recently. I was very impressed with this hotel. It is spotlessly clean, the rooms are very spacious and well appointed and warm! The Hotel staff were all very attentive and friendly. The restaurant was good and the breakfast was excellent, with a superb view to take in at the same time. Highly recommended. Only a 58 minute drive from Edinburgh Airport, along easy roads and amazing scenery. Many thanks to everyone at MacDonald Cardrona Hotel. Collapse

I recently stayed here as part of a large party celebrating a family occasion. We were booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal. We arrived a bit early but were able to check in straight away which was great as we'd been travelling for 4 hours. Our room was extremely spacious, clean and very comfortable with excellent facilities and we were very impressed. We went for a swim upon arrival, the changing rooms were clean and well equipped, and the pool itself is a good size and was a brilliant temperature. It was slightly disappointing to find there was no jacuzzi which is really unusual, but the steam room and sauna were great. Unfortunately, this is where the positives have to end for now. Firstly, the bar prices are very expensive - a single glass of red wine was priced at an astonishing £14. As for the meal... service was extremely slow, with poor communication from and between staff. The starters were ok although the soups were incredibly watery. The mains were disappointing. One of our party ordered the pork and it came with a sauce containing red wine which was not stated on the menu. There was confusion amongst the staff about whether this was indeed a red wine sauce or not, eventually it was confirmed that it was - this needs to be made clearer. The lady in our party given this dish has an allergy to red wine so it's not a matter of mere preference, there could have been serious implications had she not realised. One waitress came and took her order for a completely different dish, only for another waitress to appear literally a minute later with the original dish minus the offending sauce. Clearly communication is something which needs to be improved. Another of our party had ordered the steak at a £9.95 supplement and it was not good quality at all, it was overcooked and being from a farming background our party were able to see it was not a brilliant cut of meat to begin with. It was very difficult to attract the attention of staff to get more drinks ordered, eventually members of our party had to go to the bar to order these, leaving their plates of hot food to go cold in the process. Desserts were distinctly average, and the plating was inconsistent - myself and another lady both ordered the same panacotta dish and did not both have the same elements on the plate. Our biggest bugbear with the dinner was the portion sizes - they were in general very small. The featherblade of beef was described as being served with roast root vegetables - the teensy tiny cubes of carrot and turnip were barely noticeable! The panacotta dessert was dainty to put it politely. Breakfast the next morning was somewhat more enjoyable than dinner, with a good selection of cold items and hot breakfasts cooked to order. It's just a pity that this standard was not achieved at both mealtimes!!! Overall, it's a beautiful hotel and the facilities are good. I would love to have given a 4* review and swithered over whether to do so, but sadly the issues encountered during dinner were too significant. If we were to return here I think it would be for bed and breakfast only and we'd have an evening meal elsewhere. Collapse

Stayed last night with 3 course meal and breakfast included,, Overall not bad, service a bit slow waited 20mins for pot of tea this morning, by any standard thats poor and the price of breakfast expensive and dont get much ,, had the full breakfast comprising of 1 bacon 1 sausage 1 egg blar blar blar £18 for that ,, way over the top,, on the good side bedroom lovely size but a bit tired could do with a bit of TLC.. Evening meal was lovely had the Cullen skink,, beef medallions and chocolate brownie-all were lovely,, Drinks on expensive side a bottle of Merlot Alto Roja was a surprisingly eye watering £29,,goggled the wine and you can by it locally for between £6 to £8 but at £10 a glass the much cheaper option was to buy the bottle,, wouldn’t return but glad i tried the cardonna,, Staff were friendly and kept apologising for the long waits,, they would be less stressed by having a self service breakfast where you could make your own tea/ coffee and serve yourself breakfast and then eat has much as needed,, my other half was struggling-with small portion size.. My wife and I have stayed here on several occasions and just love the tranquillity, the fabulous pool & spa and the wonderful Renwick's restaurant. However, I have to confess that while I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and the meals we had I was appalled at the prices on the wine list. Now I enjoy my wine and I'm happy to pay for a good bottle for a special occasion - it was my birthday - but I got the distinct impression, having perused the wine list, that they had simply bought in a 'mixed bag' and added a mark up of 400 - 500%. Honestly, £41 for a pretty ordinary Rioja - you have to be joking! And, interestingly, when looking around the dining room I could not help but notice that many couples had opted for a beer for the man and a glass of wine for the lady! Reduce the prices to a more reasonable, and sensible, level and you will sell more bottles. As the meerkats say: 'Simples!' If you enjoy golf then the hotel has a great course but, otherwise, you can follow the line of the old Tweed Valley rail route into Peebles which is about 3 mile long and takes just under an hour to walk. Highly recommended! Collapse
