Lough Eske Castle, a five star castle hotel is located just outside Donegal Town, has a rich history dating back to the 1400's being associated with the O'Donnells, the founding fathers of Donegal, a county in the Northwest region of Ireland. This is an historic building in a storybook location delivering superior hospitality and comfort. The castle hotel is the ideal place for the business traveller who wants modern day comforts and solitude to brainstorm; the wedding couple who want a WOW venue for their special day or the company who wants something different for their clients and employees.
It is the only Irish hotel to claim a World Luxury Hotel Award and has won the Luxury Country Hotel title three years in a row. Lough Eske Castle has also been named No. 1 Hotel in Ireland by MyGuideIreland; and it has been recognised among the World's Best Castle Hotels by global travel expert Stephanie Abrams.
This is the only 5 star castle hotel in Donegal and the accommodation features just 96 guest rooms, two bars and a restaurant, conference and banqueting suites and a luxuriant spa. This secluded hideaway beckons you to leave civilization behind in exquisite style.
The allure of Lough Eske Castle lies in its intriguing contradictions. Despite an imposing glass and stone facade, an easygoing blend of casual, country-style comfort and modern luxury awaits inside. Simply put, this award-winning luxury castle hotel offers a fresh perspective on castle living.

Lough Eske is an amazing must see/stay hotel. From the moment you arrive the staff are incredible, the attention to details and the level of high service is FAB. You really feel like a princess here. The room was amazing, great size and again and facilities you wanted were there for you. There is also a beautiful scenic cycle/walking routes all around the lake. A must see place for everyone, I can't wait to return! Collapse

It's a very comfortable and kid friendly hotel, I liked the mix of old and new construction and the pool, gym and spa are especially well done. However, in order to make the economics work they have to cater to corporate events and that unfortunately has an effect on the overall ambiance. Check-in was a little muddled with our initially room not able to fit the pre ordered roll out bed --- we where informed 20min after we unpacked. The next room was only ready in an hours or 5.15pm. We scooted off to the pool and when we re-checked in they upgraded us to the Presidential Suite --- so nice to see staff work to solve an issue and make the guest feel great despite the hassle --- WELL DONE INDEED!!!! Presidential Suite a huge family hit! In the old section on the 2nd floor -- corner so windows on three sides. Two rooms, the bed room is large with a canopy bed and wonderful views. The lounge room has a sitting area and a dinning room table. Quiet grand and really very wonderful and much enjoyed by all. Dinner was in the casual dinning room and was good. It's very kid friendly and the service attentive. Not sure about activities, other than a great heated indoor pool and well equipped gym (small but all you need). Think this is great one night stop and would recommend. Big to the staff. Collapse

I spent the weekend in Lough Eske with my wife. From the moment we arrived we were made welcome. The staff are to be commended for their professional approach to their duties. The rooms are fantastic, very spacious with large bathrooms. We had a beautiful meal in Cedars on Saturday night, special mention to Johnny who looked after us. The food was exceptional and Chef is to be commended. The grounds are very well maintained as are all public areas. Well done to all at Lough Eske, we will definitely be returning. Collapse

My family, five women aged 68 to 42, planned our only "castle day" during our 10 day vacation in Ireland recently and selected the Lough Eske Castle as our preference. The land and physical area surrounding the castle and the drive in the lane were impressive. There was less grandeur in the interior area of the castle, specifically the reception area, than what I had expected. Since I had stayed in a couple of other castles in Ireland on a previous visit I had high expectations. This castle has a "too updated" feel about it. I understand that appeals to many, especially young couples who are looking for that fantasy wedding location, but I appreciate the "old history" feel of a castle location. I like to go exploring through old hallways and in secret passageways with what feels like an ancestral home with some mystery and intrigue. This location lacked that for me. It was clean and the service and accommodation was of high standards. The bathroom/shower facilities were excellent. My favourite feature was the area where we had our supper. Nigel, our waiter was professional and paid attention to our needs to a T. Hats off to this feature and to Nigel for helping make our evening so enjoyable. Overall, for the cost, I was disappointed. A word of warning to all travelers who know what to expect from a 5-star hotel: If you are looking for an exclusive 5-star experience and true Irish hospitality, this is not your place. Unfortunately, I cannot say anything positive about this hotel. Judging from their website you would never guess what awaits you for real once you arrive there. This is certainly not a 5 star hotel, it resembles more a run down, disorganized 4-star hotel aimed at large discount groups and families. It completely lacks the atmosphere of exclusiveness and the first class service and attention to detail that you would expect from a luxury category hotel. A soulless, cold place, that tries too hard to resemble a traditional Manor House, more like a reconstructed castle than anything else. The room I was given when I first arrived there - located just next to the outdoor restaurant area - was dark, with a stained and musty carpet; the main window was dirty and it was not possible to close it. Tissue papers were lacking in the bathroom and here it comes, the main surprise: In order to cover up a very bad smell throughout the entire living area, they had used a large air freshener, something you would usually use for a toilet! Disgusting! I had my room changed, to a more acceptable one, but must add that the carpets were stained even in other areas of the hotel. This hotel doesn't seem to put a lot of emphasis on cleanliness. I had booked several nights, including various treatments at their spa, but left the very next day. The breakfast was just average, you would get the same selection at any good 3-star place. A real shame and a huge management failure, considering the beautiful natural surroundings and the actual potential such a hotel could have. Collapse

Let me begin with what was lovely. The grounds and inside gardens, the exterior, and some of the inside spaces are exquisite. Staff in the dining room and bar area, specifically Nicki and Denise and Sarah, Jerad and Chris, went well above and beyond expectations. But now for the other side of this coin. Arrival and reception staff were extremely poor. No one was around when we pulled up to the beautiful entrance. We entered to walk past carpets being rolled from a wedding event, a vacuum cleaner in the main hallway and a badly designed reception area. The main building indicates a splendour from the past (recall Downton Abbey) but the modern boxy architecture of the central reception desk area and the hallways to the modern, out of place dining wing take away from the hinted at ambiance of days gone by. Same thing with the rooms themselves. Courtyard rooms are small, poorly aired and lack all privacy with windows open to outside guest areas. Interior rooms are far too reminiscent of a modern hotel found in any large American city. This was extremely disappointing. Also there were several problems over the two nights we stayed at Lough Eske including returning to uncleaned rooms at 5:00 p.m. after a wonderful, but long day of exploring the coast of Donegal. When told about this situation, reception was curt and defensive, pointing out that they were busy with a large wedding on the premises. There were absolutely no efforts made to compensate in any way, which is how most 5 star and diamond hotels would normally respond. We left knowing that the extremely high price we had paid did not match the hoped for experience. Earlier in our trip we spent two nights at Muckross Hotel where every detail was beautifully taken care of for visitors. The Muckross Hotel is a must if you plan to be in the area of The Ring of Kerry and Killarney. Skip Lough Eske. Collapse
