Everything was perfect from the moment we pulled up until the moment we left. The valet that took our car was enthusiastic and made us feel very welcome. It was myself and my daughter and he told us to prepare to be spoiled. The hotel was beautiful and the staff was professional at all times. We were supposed to have 2 queen beds and ended up with one King, but the bed was so large we didn't mind sharing and they gave us a voucher for a fee pizza at the onsite restaurant. My only regret is that we spent so much time at the theme parks that we didn't really get to explore the hotel. We did try the pizza at Sal's and it was really really good. Collapse

The Portofino Bay is a great place to stay while visiting Universal Studios. One takes a boat to get to park. It leaves/ arrives every 15 minutes. It is a place the adults can enjoy. There is s great pool with a slide for the kids. There are a number of restaurants. The rooms are great. Staying here allows one to get into the park an hour before the parks open to the public, although in the evening, Universal isn't very crowded anyway. In the second half of August, the local schools are back in session. The best part of the hotel is that it is not overrun by kids. And although we brought our grand child, it gives us something to enjoy as well. There are indoor and outdoor bars to have a drink and relax at the end of the hot day. Collapse

From the moment you enter the courtyard or piazza to check in you feel like your in a beautiful Italian village. Check in service was excellent as we arrived before the room was ready, so we were able to check our luggage, obtain the room key (not activated) and head over to the concierge for our Universal passes that included Express pass. We walked down to the water shuttles and headed over to Universal for the first time with my two children (12 and 8). The ride was only 5 minutes and it made the entry to both parks so very easy. If you're going for the first time be prepared to scan your pass each time you visit and use a finger print reader to enter the park, use the finger reader for renting lockers when using the rides that don't allow hats, purses or bags of any kind...(ex. The Mummy and Harry Potter). Volcano Bay was great but you need to get on the free shuttle Bus to visit this park before 7:30 am as the ride takes 15 minutes and stops at Hard Rock after the pick up from Portofino. The bus starts running at 6:30 am and leaves every 15 minutes or so and keep in mind when we went the park was full by noon. The 1 hour early entry is amazing at this park and we got on 8 rides before 11:00 am. The use of the Taputapu (wrist payment system for Volcano Bay) is excellent but before you go pre-load your Visa card with limits for all your family members and add a PIN for all to remember as this will make buying food and gifts so much easier. If it does not work when you use it at the park, go to the concierge (on-site) and they can resolve it for you. The first thing you want to do when you arrive is get a locker, issue here is you need cash to pre-pay for the locker or credit card and then your Taputapu works all day....what I found interesting here was once you leave the park the locker does not release for another family to use and we saw a number of people without the early entry struggling to find a locker to rent. Overall the food and service within the resort was amazing, Sal's Pizza was excellent, American Bar was super and the pool side service at the main pool was above PAR. I could go on and on, but we will be returning for sure and I highly recommend spending the little extra for a club room as the perks for this are AMAZING. Collapse

Stayed here for the easy access to Universal. Very pleased we did as it was such a relaxed environment. Good choice of restaurants. Some nice shops around the hotel complex. The room was large with views over the bay. Double sinks in the bathroom though disappointed the shower was over the bath, it was a large enough room to take a walk in shower too. Breakfast was lovely, excellent choices and omelettes made to order by Paulo. Takeout cold water offered by the server which we then took to the parks and we refilled constantly from the water fountains. Fast track park pass - wouldn't do the park without it. Collapse
