We popped in for lunch while shopping and it was at first as if we were invisible none of the staff noticed us. We were then told we could sit in the lounge to eat if we wanted to! We ordered and then we waited and we waited for it to arrive. The tea arrived quickly though. The only positive was we were ignored so much we could have both gone to sleep on the settees and no one would have noticed. I am sure in its hey day it was a nice place but now it needs better customer service Collapse

After a week away in Wales we decided to make a detour to Shrewsbury for a bite to eat, the place from the outside looked inviting with its natural character. we walked in and were slightly confused where to go, the waitress just looked at us as if we needed an invitation and said nothing. we went to the bar and asked if we could order food, we picked a table in the bar area and sat down, at this point I asked if there was a highchair available which it was just 5 minutes later covered in jam and butter, filthy, which we had to clean ourselves!! At this point we were honestly debating staying. I went and ordered, 2 burgers chicken wings and onion rings, on the till she had clicked chicken skewers so I had to correct her. I had also asked for some hot water to heat up the baby food we had brought with us, this was not a problem but we were not aloud it on the same table we were sat at, quite bizarre but apparently health and safety, does that apply of I order a coffee as it would be the same temperature as the water I asked for??? We waited, and waited, and waited with 2 other couples waiting, and waiting and you guessed it waiting! Suddenly the music can on in faulty towers, anyway after 1 hour of waiting for food guess what arrived.... Chicken skewers! Yes they were not for our table they were for one of the other 2. They were removed from our table and I asked how long would our food be, by this point I had already been back to the car to put another ticket on! The food arrived, 2 burgers chicken wings and onion rings, falsely advertised in a sour dough bap, which was more like a 3663 white bap and a burger half the size which had obviously been cooking for the past hour resembling gandhi 's flip flops. I opened the burger to find bacon, now I don't have any allergies or religious reasons for not eating pork but this could be a very serious situation!! But again there was a mistake, That's right they were meant for the couple behind us so not only did they mess up 1 table, they messed up 3 out of 3!!! I asked to speak to the manager and the waitress was confused why I wanted to speak to her, as if 3 separate complaints was to confusing to understand. The manager arrived and told her exactly what had happened. She had then said have you paid, I said it was on a tab, her response was we will not be asking you to pay. Now The fact that we haven't touched the food and are stood up with coats on ready to get the he'll out, no way was I thinking about paying let alone pushing the chair back under the table, the only thing they did get was a clean highchair at the end of it!! There are obviously many problems here: A lack of training Hygiene issues A blame on the kitchen when front of house are obviously to blame as well A manager that quite frankly doesn't have a clue what is going on around her, and maybe should be focusing on the customer experience not just punching numbers! We walked out and the other 2 couples followed , 1 of which invited us to eat with them in the Henry tutor house, a fantastic burger in there 10oz hand pressed in a brioche bun with bacon and cheese, friendly staff and a fantastic atmosphere at only £1 more per burger if you need food go to here Henry tutor house. Will keep you posted with the local newspaper as we would love to find this couple. Collapse

Shrewsbury ahh just live this town and The Lion is the hotel to stay at. Bang in town centre and a historic old building with beams, creakily floors, tapestry walls and a magnificent lounge with a massive fire place. Decent rooms although dated of course and could do with some refurb but the character is there. Comfy beds, good food and drink and excellent staff. Car park at rear too. Excellent Collapse

The Lion Hotel is a charming olde worlde old coaching inn in a prime location. We parked in the car park for a reduced rate (£5 for 24 hours). Check in was simple and easy. The staff were very friendly. Our room 206, was at the front of the house on the main road but the noise didnt bother us at all. The double bed was comfortable and although the room was a little cold when we first arrived, it soon warmed up with the rads on. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean as was the linen and towels. The bathroom wasnt very appealing, I cant pinpoint why but it felt cold and lacking decorative warmth. Dinner was lovely. Plenty of choice and the staff were brilliant. Breakfast too was lovely. A buffet style cold table with cereal, fruit, bread, yoghurts etc etc and hot food to order. Even though it is an olde worlde hotel, it could do with a bit of attention now eg carpets are threadbare in many areas, comfy chairs a little too well worn - things like that. I would recommend anyone to stay here, its different, its huge, full of character and history, amazing staff. I will definitely be back. Collapse

We (my wife and I) returned from our11th visit since2010 last November. Why do we choose The Lion ? 1/All staff friendly helpful and knowledgeable . 2/All rooms spotlessly clean 3/Bedroom/bathroom spotlessly clean, also bed linen and towels. 4/Comfortable bed and easy chairs 5/Food quality ,quantity and variety excellent 6/Public areas welcoming ,comfortable and clean 7/Car parking on site Last November we had a great deal staying b/b and evening meal for13 days. We originally booked for 9 days ,however we read in the local paper the towns Christmas lights were to be switched on ,so we extended our break 4 days. Lights were excellent ,the icing on the cake. What could be better than sitting in front of a roaring open fire chatting and enjoying excellent refreshments, as I am sure Charles Darwin did many years ago. The hotel is centrally positioned so guests can easily walk to lots of independent shops, also national chains within a very few minutes of the finest ( I think) Medieval town in the UK Lots of very interesting places to visit within a few miles . Just look at the web site for los of ideas. WHY DONT YOU FEEL AT HOME WITH THE LION? . Collapse
