Bought a deal off travel zoo for a one night stay, dinner and breakfast. Hotel has some parking first come first serve, can't reserve. Parking is £5. Hotel is very old inside. One noisey old lift. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Double room was quite small and bed felt like just big bigger than a single and we're not the biggest of people.. Very hot in there as has the sun on it. Over looked the front/Road but wasn't noisey at all. Heard the rd sweeper at 6am that's it no traffic noise. 3 course dinner was lovely and breakfast was great very busy time we went down. Plenty to choose from then order full English. Hotel closes at 12am so have to ring the bell or phone night porter to get in. Would feel awkward if we had of gone to a club as it feels like more a b&b returning to. My husband wanted to go back out for food at 12.30 but decided not to as didn't want to explain he's popping out then ring bell to return with food. Only stairs use aswell probably because lift is noisey at that time. Overall great staff, great location and great price. Would stay again. Collapse

I have fond memories of Sunday afternoons here 30 years ago, having cream teas by the lovely fire in the lounge and when I bought an Afternoon Tea with Prosecco voucher was pleased to see from the details that afternoon tea would be served there. When I booked I wasn't given any instructions about how to present the voucher so assumed it was ok to show the voucher on my phone, again as per the details on the voucher site. On arrival we had to wait to be shown to our table and while we waited I offered to deal with the voucher part of our booking but the receptionist made it clear it was the responsibility of the person we were waiting for who we could see in the lounge admiring a baby and chatting. The receptionist eventually had to take us to our table which was in a small bar lounge and not the lounge as I thought. Now, this bit is actually making me laugh to think of - our table had a normal height dining chair and a sagging red armchair which was really low and crying out to have its cushions plumped up and straightened. How you expect two people to enjoy a meal seated like that is beyond me. We wouldn't have been able to see each other! My sister asked nicely if we could bring a better chair over to use and was told yes but wasn't offered any help to do so and heaved the armchair out of the way and carried another chair over herself. After a fairly long pause our waitress arrived and was a bit 'snippy' that I hadn't got a printed voucher and I had to then email it from my phone to Reception which luckily I was able to do. Regarding the food - it was quite a basic afternoon tea but everything was tasty and fresh and the scones were lovely and served warm. The prosecco wasn't chilled at all but I don't think I would have dared mention it. The waitress didn't return at all once we were served so we weren't offered more tea or hot water. An afternoon tea should feel a bit special but unfortunately small details let it down in our opinion. Collapse

Can’t say enough good things about this place. On arrival we parked easily in the hotel garage, then greeted at reception, by a friendly polite young receptionist. Having explained we unfortunately could only stay one night and the fact that we had to check out of our hotel where we were supposed to stay in Penkridge as it was abominable! she upgraded us to a lovely room . All mod cons. Tissues, toiletries, tea and coffee. It gave us such a nice feeling of welcome. We explored the hotel and at every corner there was something of interest to see. We then ordered tea, which was really nice. We had a great nights sleep and then a wonderful breakfast with plenty of choice. We are looking forward to another trip but for a lot longer next time. Highly recommended, and for anybody looking to have a wedding on a budget with lots of atmosphere, and great service, do give this hotel a good look before you spend hundreds for nothing. The ballroom one of the wedding venues, is absolutely awesome( hate that word) but it best describes this particular establishment. Thank you for a lovely stay. Collapse

The Lion Hotel quite took us by suprise. It is a really old coaching inn and has many corridors and steps, and creaky floorboards too. However it is excellent value for money and has been sympathetically updated to include wifi that actually works and decoration in keeping with it's age.The hotel certainly has a well used feel about it in terms of furniture from a by gone era.The staff try hard to please the customers and we found local Tom in the bar easy and pleasant to chat to,he has a good attitude to customers. Our room was really well cleaned and very comfortable, and had all we needed to enjoy our stay.It was good to see Richard the GM was visible often during our three days there, and was keen to ask how our stay was.We found the breakfasts and dinners at The Lion to be of a good standard, although the evening menu is a little limited. We would certainly like to return to The Lion next time we visit Shrewsbury. Collapse
