I had a lovely break in the Lion Quays Hotel Oswestry a couple of years ago and was looking forward to going back again. However this time our room was directly above the area where they kept the peacock who was extremely vocal. (I was not aware of it on my previous stay). Also the same said peacock was free to wander around the hotel grounds which totally freaked me as I have a bird phobia and if anyone else has this problem, this hotel is one to be avoided! Collapse

Very pleasant hotel with spa facilities. Typical of larger hotels it felt a little impersonal. But it was a good hotel, no real grumbles. However, on checking out there seemed to be a failure to understand that I had already paid for my stay through Superbreak and wanted to charge me again. All cleared up once I showed receipt sent by Superbreak to me. My advice bring a copy with you. This was quickly sorted out. Yes I would stay again. Collapse

I have stayed at this hotel for two years in a row. Each stay we have had breakfast included and also a trip to the spa. The hotel is beautiful and is directly on the canal, the hotel room was lovely and has its own coffee machine with complimentary tea, coffee and hot chocolates as well as bottled water. The hotel also provides a dressing gown and slippers. On each stay the hotel room has been very clean however in some areas could do with a lick off paint. There is a bright light above the door which only becomes obvious at night times however it didn’t effect myself or my partners sleep. The staff have been polite and professional on both stays both at the reception to the hotel and the spa. The breakfast at the hotel is nice there is a choice off hot food ( full English ) and a continental choice. With unlimited tea, coffee, apple / orange juice. The breakfast area is very clean, modern and welcoming and the staff are very attentive. The spa is lovely and has excellent facilities, the staff are very professional, polite and helpful. When you pay for the spa you do get a complimentary dressing gown, flip flops and towel and your own designated locker. You also have access to a small buffet lunch which does have limited choice but is tasty. I did find it disappointing that the general public do have access to the main pool area. This would usually be fine however on a relaxing spa weekend the last thing I wanted was to listen to children. However there is a separate room which the general public don’t have access to however the seating can be a bit limited. With the hotel being on the canal we did venture out on leisurely walks and came across a pub called ‘The Poachers’ ( Chirk area ) the food here was nice and wasn’t expensive. We actually visited on a Friday evening and they had a deal on. Two 8oz steaks and trimmings for £15.00. The pub also has outdoor seating so food and drinks can be enjoyed outside if the sun is shining. The hotel is a short drive from Oswestry which has a brilliant antiques shop, local super markets, pubs and shops. Collapse

The rooms were extremely small and with a standard double being £150+ I expect much more. To make things worse we had peeling paint in the shower & no hot water in the morning (circa 9am). We did ask for an early check in (12ish) & were charged £20 for the privilege which seems extortionate. Breakfast was OK but nothing special. We had booked with the intention of using the leisure services after breakfast but were so disappointed we decided to cut our losses and leave straight after breakfast. We had booked the hotel as an overnight stay around a Wedding we had attended; has certainly left a slight blot on what was a lovely weekend. Would not recommend Collapse

Stayed for 4 nights. Check in quick, assisted by polite staff. Room nice with view of the llangollen canal. We ate in the restaurant on first night, we found service quick and staff helpful. Food very expensive for gastro pub type food, two courses 1 bottle of wine £90 food was tasty though. Very bad nights sleep, noisy neibours (not hotels fault) bathroom extractor fan which ran constantly and a green light outside bathroom which lit the room up, i have never known this before in a hotel, take an eye mask if you are affected by light at night. Health club and spa was fantastic, great swimming pool, all very clean. Breakfast was standard buffet, nothing special for a 4 star hotel. Check out efficient but staff did not ask if our stay was ok. Collapse

We spontaneously visited Lion Quays on a Sunday break. The spa is fantastic and the most calm I've felt in a long time. Treatments are a little pricey, but that's not unusual for a spa. The leisure facilities that are included are great though. The hotel itself was a gem. Staff are friendly and the bed is really comfy. Our only qualm was that we were offered a free bottle of bubbly and didn't receive one, which was a bit disappointing on a romantic night away. The restaurants on site serve really tasty food, but £18 for a burger is a little steep. Overall we had a great time and plan to visit again! Collapse
Tatty Overpriced Food and in need of Good Management.

Booked a Room with Canal View for several days for my Wife's Birthday. Originally allocated first floor room with no balcony. So we Paid for an upgrade with Balcony and Table and Chairs with Canal View. Allocated a Balcony with a 10 foot Bush blocking any view of the Canal. Settled for final allocation and only one available, which had Ivy and Weeds growing across half the Balcony. Patio was littered with falling masonry and cigarette stumps, not to mention the Poisonous Birdsfoot Trefoil Flower growing in various parts of the Patio. Toilet Flush kept sticking and continuing to flush. The Shower Control came off when turned. Noise from Bathroom Extractor Fan all night, never went off and no on/off option. Get to Breakfast early,if you do not want rubbery hard Fried Eggs. Scrambled Eggs were surprising they light and fluffy. Or you can opt for two made to order Poached Eggs which were perfectly done. Lots of half full breakfast plates left on tables as you leave the Restaurant That is not a good sign. Was first there at 6.30pm for Evening Meal ordered drinks at Table waited 20 mins then asked Waitress if we were ever going to get our drinks and was anybody interested in taking our order? Had a Shared Sea Food Platter Board. Nicely presented lovely Tempura Battered Prawns with Chilli Sauce. One large Fishcake tasty, but would have been better as two smaller ones,as we were sharing. The Smoked Salmon slices, my Wife's Favourite, were very very Cold and so Salty that they were inedible after one piece. The Mackerel Fillets were equally Cold almost frozen and again inedible. We walked out and left half the Platter, Complained on way out. The Manager did ring us in our Room and apologised and reduced the Food Bill accordingly. Wish I had opted for my usual meal when eating out i.e. 8oz Fillet Steak with Peppercorn Sauce but costing £36.45 I decided they were having a laugh. Next night, we opted to have the food delivered toour Room we opted for a Marguerita Pizza and a portion of Smoked Paprika Chips. Now everyone knows a Marguerita is named after the Italian Queen and is meant to represent the three colours of the Italian Flag, Red White and Green hence the Tomato sauce Mozzarella and Basil this was advertised as Oregano instead fair enough but couldn't find any, and cheese was more like cheddar. Better if they called it just a Lion Quays Pizza then the Trades Discription wouldn't be wrong, and they delivered Salt and Pepper Chips not Paprika. All very Tasty. This place is in a great location but is looking neglected, unloved and badly managed, such a shame. On Checkout we were reimbursed for our Upgrade charge and hopefully the Receptionist took action on our Constructive Feedback not Complaint as such. After all if no one tells you, then you can't fix it or improve and do better. The Spa and Swimming Pool etc was stunning, only two of us in there at 8.am. In all it was a very relaxing break watching the Narrow Boats quietly glide past our Balcony,. The Gardener needs to address the encroaching jungle to maintain the Canal View. Collapse
