I have stayed at this hotel many times over the past 20 years, and the welcome and hospitality I have received have always been outstanding - hence my return, again and again, even if I can sometimes find a better price at a few other Marriott prices in Dubai. I did stay at the JW Marriott Marquis last year, just to try it out. It is impressive: large, modern, glitzy. But perhaps too large for me - I didn't like having to stand in a snaking line at reception anytime I went there; the multi-station restaurant was so large that I kept losing my way; and the Kardashians would have felt right at home there. So I've gone back to the Deira hotel several times since. I am always impressed that the reception and bell staff go out of their way to welcome me back, even though I only go there two or three times per year. Olesia, the manager, came out from behind the reception counter to greet me when I arrived, and today she even hailed a cab for me. Nahir and Ibrahim and all the bell staff are unfailingly polite and helpful. In the Executive Lounge reception, Gemma is like an old friend now and she is always solicitous for my welfare durinag my visit. I'm a Mrriott Gold member, and Gemma was concerned that I didn't get an upgraded room this visit (I arrived early in the morning, and the hotel was filled with several groups). So Gemma offered to move me to a 'better' room the next day; but I was quite happy with the standard room I had (and didn't want to pack and unpack again), so as long as I had internet and Lounge access, I was satisfied. Mohammed and Abdul Rahiman and all the Lounge staff were likewise very kind, cheerful and eager to serve. It's a true oasis, not only for dining but just for kicking back with a cold drink and the newspaper. Most of the breakfast offerings in the Lounge are quite satisfactory, but the chef (new?) couldn't seem to cook scrambled eggs properly - day after day they were watery, and beaten to death so that instead of having large, soft curds they were small, bumpy but soft pellets. I did try them once, but they were tasteless (are they using powdered eggs without adding any real eggs?); after that I switched to omelettes or hard-boiled eggs. It shouldn't be too hard to get someone to show the chef how to make proper scrambled eggs in a place like the Executive Lounge. I dined at La Cucina Italian restaurant three times, and being pretty much an expert on Italian food, I was very pleased with the meals I had there, which is why I went back. Sherwin and Sugandha were my servers, and they couldn't have been better (I myself worked in a restaurant in my younger years, and I was pleased with their service). The Hofbrauhaus is a regular stop for me, because I have part-German background and I miss some foods I can't get in Perth, Australia where I live. This place never lets me down (and it's the only restaurant in the hotel where you can get pork instead of things like 'turkey bacon', I believe). I had the pork knuckle with crackling, sweet red kraut, pretzels and mustard, and wonderful fried potatoes and onions. Wunderbar! The Vienna Cafe, a 24-hour restaurant in the hotel, has always been a favourite of mine. My waiter friend Reggie has now moved on to the housekeeping dept., so my servers were Cecile (who was going through training on one of my visits nearly three years ago and has grown into her position very well!) and Akhil, who gives understated but very professional service. Unfortunately, the quality of meals at the Vienna Cafe has steadily declined over the past two years or so; perhaps they have different chefs, but the quality was hit-and-miss. I had a Reuben sandwich that used to be spectacular - thick, tender and delicious; but this time it was open-face (why?), dry, and nearly cold, as were the french fries. I pointed this out to Cecile, who offered to have the chef make another sandwich, but I didn't have time to wait. She did bring me a dish of fresh, hot fries, which was nice; and she said that the chef explained that splitting the sandwich to make it open-face caused the sandwich to cool down in transit from the kitchen. My solution: don't serve it open-face! I ordered room service several times, and it was usually fine. Singh and other servers were very friendly and eager to serve. However, the first day, because I was tired and just wanted to stay in my room after arrival, I ordered a Marriott burger, which is supposed to be the hotel chain's signature sandwich, and which is usually delicious. This one was hard, dry and nearly cold. Again, I didn't complain at the time because what are you going to do - wait another 30 minutes or so for another one? All in all, I love this hotel. However, food-wise, a guest is pretty much at the mercy of the hotel because there are no eateries within walking distance. Sometimes when I'm driving downtown, I think of perhaps staying in a different hotel because the streets are lined with restaurants (like Tony Roma's), cafes and take-away places, which would make dining a bit easier and more varied for a hotel guest. But it's the people at this hotel who have my loyalty; and I like the ambience - not glass and chrome and glitz, but a classic and warm hotel with very comfortable and cozy rooms. Thank you, JW Marriott Deira! Collapse

This was my second visit, the last in October 2017. The welcome was great, being recognized as if I had never been away. Staff as usual go out of their way to help. Of particular note: Raj and his crew in the executive lounge as attentive as ever, even remembering how I like my tea and poached eggs Lovely Gillian and the other staff at the Piano lounge. Iqbal, Peter and Lavu at the pool always making sure of ones comfort. The iced fruit kebabs were most welcome. Earle and the concierge and valet parking boys. Always happy to take my shopping to my room; from too, too, many trips to the Malls!!! Finally everyone at JW Steakhouse for the service and mostly a fabulous Wagyu sirloin that was perfectly cooked and so tender teeth were not really required. Looking forward to September and my next visit. Collapse
