With an aim to provide the kind of service you would only expect in some of the top luxury Windermere & Lake District guest houses. From the moment you arrive you will be made to feel welcome and to feel at home.
All of the rooms are well appointed and spacious. There is also a TV & wireless broadband available for guests. Although being in the heart of the Lake District, it would be a travesty to miss its dramatic scenery and beautiful landscapes, despite the temptation of the luxury and comfort of The Howbeck.
The Howbeck's award-winning restaurant is the perfect place to start your day. Whether you're planning to hike, cycle, sail or simply sightsee, what better way to set yourself up than with a hearty Cumbrian platter. We stayed for valentines night and got the romance package which included rose petals on the bed, champagne & glasses and local chocolates - set the tone straight away as the service was excellent, nothing was too much bother. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was exactly as advertised with a large spa bath and breakfast was absolutely delicious especially the eggs Benedict! The hotel is a 15 min walk to the main part of lake Windermere and it's a lovely walk through the small shops, ideal location as there's plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from, Collapse

This was one of our favourite B&B's, and previously given glowing reccomendation but no more! We have stayed here in numerous occasions, previously all exceptional, however last weekend we were very disappointed in the room, we did not get what was advertised, and breakfast was the worst we have experienced. Eggs benedict is my favourite, we both ordered and got hard poached eggs with what look like clarified butter certainly wasn't hollandaise sauce! Have been awaiting feedback from the Howbeck, still waiting! We will not return! Collapse

My partner and I stayed here the 25th-27th January for our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Upon arrival the woman on the front desk was friendly and incredibly helpful with local knowledge of pubs, bars and restaurants we should try out while in the area. We stayed in the Caplecrag room which was clean, warm and representative of the photos on the website. The room had an very comfortable king-size bed, and we had two great nights sleep with no disturbance. The only let down was the Jacuzzi bath. The tap for the hot water would barely turn and seemed almost broken, and when we used the Jacuzzi feature (with only one person in the bath as instructed), parts of the Jacuzzi bath popped off. Owing to this we didn't feel comfortable using the bath. We let staff know but did not complain as we didn't want this to reflect on the rest of the hotel or the staff who were wonderful. There is a wide choice for breakfast (fruit salad, cereal, full English, croissants), and the male member of staff during the day was kind enough to wrap up our croissants so we could take them on our country walk. Overall we had a wonderful stay and would definitely return, the bath was the only feature which let the room down, but was not a major issue for us. Collapse

We stayed in The Retreat for 2 nights in November. Pros: - Large well-appointed room - Spa Bath with TV (the tv worked fine for us, other reviewers mentioned problems but we didn't have any at all) - Large & very comfy bed and pillows - Separate closet - Lovely breakfast - Eggs Benedict was particularly delicious - Friendly staff - Great location just a couple of minutes walk from the centre Cons: - Large cracks in the bathroom floor tiles. I saw these mentioned in other reviews so they weren't a surprise but they really ought to be fixed as soon as they happen. - The bathroom is dark and I couldn't find a light on the bathroom mirror (I didn't ask so there may be one and this may be a moot point) so it was impossible to do your make up in it. I ended up doing my make up in the full-length mirror in the bedroom which was better lit but a bit of a nuisance. - The room is at the back of the hotel, set down a level from the car park. Although not technically overlooked I felt odd having the curtains open as you could look in and one day we had a lovely view of one the staff having a cigarette in the car park (thankfully after she brought our breakfast) - The room is down a couple of steep steps behind a bush which when we were there really should have been cut back as it was very wet and you couldn't get past without getting your arm wet. It was also a little slippery which could be difficult if you are not steady on your feet, particularly on a wet evening. I'm giving it a three based on the value for money I felt we got. For what we paid I would have expected the above to have been dorted. if we had been able to stay for a cheaper price I'd probably rate it a 4 out of 5. I'd have no problem staying here again but certainly wouldn't pay the amount we did for it again. Collapse
