Fawlty Towers Dining Experience was cancelled, wasn't expecting the Hotel room to be part of the experience!

We drove nearly 2 hours to stay in the hotel for the Fawlty Towers Dining Experience. On entering the Hotel I was relieved that I'd booked and found the right hotel as there was right in front of us as we walked in a big advert for the Fawlty Towers Dining Experience for that very night right in front of us. We checked in, during checking the receptionist asked if we wanted to reserve a table for dinner. It was here that it all went downhill! She was really friendly, and it wasn't her fault but it transpires that the experience was cancelled! On checking it seems I had an email that was sat in my spam stating that the hotel had cancelled the event. "We have been advised by Comedy Dining that the event "Fawlty Towers Dinner Show" on Sat 19 January 2019 at 7.00PM has been cancelled due to instructions from the hotel to cancel.". Ok, so we'e got a weekend away in Stevenage, lets make the most of it! Strange that the advertising was still up, but it did have two other events on the same poster, they could have added "cancelled" to it or something though! It got stranger as we got further to our room. On the ground floor (the lowest floor), the lifts only had a down call button..... In the lift (and I didn't notice this until later) but there's a sign saying what's on each floor..... but it's the opposite way to the direction of travel for the lift (this may be me being strange but surely you start with ground at the bottom and go up to the top floor on signs for a lift?). Anyway, we got up to our executive room on the 4th floor. It was FREEZING cold. Got into the room, the door didn't shut or lock properly without a real "wiggle" on the door, and the "latch" was missing. So much for feeling safe and that no one can just barge in on us at any time. We hung our coats on the only hook (other than in the wardrobe). Decided to use the en suite - (I will never understand the need for hotels to put glass, even if they are frosted, doors on bathrooms!). Couldn't find the light switch! Oh, yes, of course, they were under our coats... perfect placement of a hook, so anything you put on it cover a light switch for the bathroom. Into the bathroom we go. We did pick an executive room didn't we? Bathroom is pretty well sized, but there's mold around the bath, poor tiling, water damage and stains, damage to walls, suspect marks and the toilet seat doesn't fit. Being as dissapointed as we were we continued to look around the room to see what the board downstairs says is a £170 per night room. Minibar- but no price list. Turn up the heating to 17oC, a little while later it's hotter than the surface of the sun - guess that's why the room was cold, the thermostat doesn't work so it had been turned off. WiFi - I wouldn't call it "highspeed" as was advertised, but it was functional, iron and ironing board... yes they're ok. Bed and pillows a little harder than I like but you can't please everyone. It's also good to see that they have a non-discriminatory employment policy though! It's the only reason I can imagine that the TV and other fixtures/ fittings and sockets around the hotel are at such funny angles. The tip of the iceberg though? The room was supposed to have a hairdryer. It had a little vanity area, with table/ shelf and a mirror and draw but there was no hairdryer - there wasn't even any sockets.... nothing in any of the draws. It was only later we discovered the hair dryer! Of course, it had been screwed to the wall UNDER the desk at the opposite end of the wall to the unit that was obviously put there for it.. the chord was so short, to use the hairdryer you would have to sit on the floor! All in all, we missed the Fawlty Towers Dining Experience, and I'll take that up with Comedy Dining and Ticket Source, but Holiday Inn definitely took up the reigns and gave us the Fawlty Towers Hotel Experience! Stayed at the hotel for the weekend. Was not sure what to expect as Stevenage has had some bad press but pleasantly surprised. Yes it’s s bit of a concrete jungle but people were friendly. Plenty of nightlife and enjoyed the hotel. Bed extremely comfortable had a very good sleep. Breakfast was included which was fine. Bit pricey for parking as it was £10 For 24 hours but it was in the city and the car was safe as there was cctv covering the car park. Hotel very clean nice bar area and staff very friendly. Overall a nice visit. Collapse

Ok so I have said the best things first. My room was large, clean and comfortable and it had a very high tog rated quilt which was a good job as the room was freezing despite me turning up the heating to 30 degrees. The lift was dreadfully noisey and sounded like an overloaded spin dryer if you have a room near it... you won't get much sleep. I did think the fire station would keep me awake but it was the lift! The breakfast was help your self and although everything you could wish for was there it was all luke warm. I also spotted a very shrivelled sausage under the counter..... check to see if its still there! I previously stopped in the Premier Inn across the way and I will do again next time as well. Wont be stopping at the Holiday Inn again Collapse
