We have been staying at this hotel on and off for around 35 years from when they were first called Posthouse Forte. We stay here when we come to Portsmouth for business as my husband is a Spire Elite member of the hotel group. As you can imagine we have seen lots of changes over the years not all for the better I'm afraid. Over the last few years the overall standards have dropped considerably. Let me clarify, the swimming pool changing rooms are often filthy with hair, dirt and grime,so I felt I had no choice but to wrap myself up with just a towel around my wet swimming costume and walk through reception to my room on the 5th floor just to take a clean shower!! The executive rooms are ok but they need improving...the furnishings are cheap and there is no safe. The breakfast is not too bad with plenty of choice although pricey to purchase if not included. We don't use the restaurant for dinner anymore as it's too much like a canteen. There are much better choices nearby. The staff are not as friendly with exception of the Sicillian lady on reception who is very good. Oh and they have now started charging £5 to park overnight. Overall I think the staff, cleanliness and standards have been allowed to slip since new owners took over a few years ago. On that note I think it's better value to stay at Holiday Inn Express Gunwharf Quay and get free breakfast, friendly staff, much cleaner hotel and great location. I would now rate this hotel 3 star and not recommend or return. They need to up there game big time! Collapse
‘Good’ Nights Stay...

No issues, no complaints, wanted to make use of the swimming pool, but arrived too late. Food was as expected, easy access to ferry port. Car parking was £5 per night, and paid £70 for the room, inclusive of breakfast.

This hotel is conveniently situated for the millennium footway and historic dockyard accessed via Gunwarf quay bus station. A bus outside the hotel is 2 stops to Gunwarf Quay shopping/cinema/restaurnats. Parking at the hotel is no longer free as shown on many websites, but is £5 a night (if there is space) in 2019. A fundamental expectation for a Holiday Inn is for a good bed, not one which has springs popping up (even through the mattress topper) when you turn over or move. One side of the bed was so worn it had little support beneath a no doubt favoured position for watching TV. The breakfast area is fairly small for the hotel rooms, so the lifts has frequency of usage times to ease the situation. In the last breakfast hour few rolls and pastries available some days. A single breakfast choice from a continental and English breakfast buffet is available, not either as on some websites. An expensive bar sandwich was barely edible, and did not fit the menu description. Bedroom/bathroom very clean, and bar/restaurant staff helpful. Swimming pool showing it'sage and female changing room not really clean or inviting. Although my room was non-refundable I left early for my own comfortable bed! Collapse
