Visited Manchester as we had tickets to see Man United play Wigan. Our hotel was only a 20 min walk from Old Trafford and having stayed there before when visiting we knew exactly what we were getting. Very friendly, helpful and attentive staff, nothing was too much trouble. Room was very comfortable and immaculately clean. The food in the restaurant was lovely, although we only had breakfast there but the choice was great. Either cereal, fruit, pastries and juices or a full English and all buffet service, so you could have as much as you wished. I would definitely recommended this hotel if you were visiting Manchester for the footie at Old Trafford as it is well within walk distance. You can park your car safely overnight in secured parking without worrying. And a lovely chinese takeaway/fish and chip shop just on the corner by the hotel for supper after the game - excellent!!!. I only stayed here as the footie meant the city centre hotels were full. About a 45 min walk from Piccadilly and not in the nicest area but I didn't mind the walk, clocked up a lot of steps on my pedometer! Check in was amusing as the young, friendly but completely unprofessional lady tried to check me in at the same time as trying to find the guest who'd booked a taxi (looked in the bar, phoned the room, screeched around reception etc) whilst exchanging banter with the other young staff from the bar and restaurant. A real multi-tasker! She was very friendly and funny, but nowhere near the professionalism Holiday Inns normally are. The extent of my welcome as a Spire Elite member was "da ya want the points?" I was then told I had to swipe my credit card if I wanted to charge anything to my room - not normally the policy for Spire Elite members in the zillion other Holiday Inns I've stayed in I said; blank uncomprehending look was the response. Easier to swipe so I did, to be told you can have "30 quid". Blimey, there goes my lobster & champagne dinner plans then! The Exec room was really nice (hence 2 stars) with a friendly welcoming letter from the manager and an invite to enjoy the free refreshments accompanying the letter. Unfortunately there weren't any so on my way out for a run I asked the same lady on the front desk to please send up the free promised refreshments. After a loud "there's really nuffink there???" exclamation, she said it wasn't possible to send up the refreshments as she doesn't have keys to the rooms. God forbid if I have a problem then! Instead she greeted me on my return from a run with a 1 litre bottle of water - there's your Exec room refreshments mate, bosh! Again really funny but not the usual Holiday Inn experience! I ate in the bar and the steak & chips was ok, albeit I had to tell the young girl on the bar that you normally ask how you want your steak cooked, but I might as well not have bothered as my medium request came out close to well done. Didn't mind though as it was good and the footie was on (we won). Lots of loud banter between the young staff to enjoy, with the chef joining in and the night manager. To be fair the chef did ask whether the steak was "allright mate?", and I said to be fair it was. It wasn't how I ordered but heh, the footie's on. Great power shower in the room except in the morning it went scalding hot every minute or so. When reported at check-out I was told I wasn't the only person to point this out so clearly there's a problem. Check-out was easy and the same lady asked had everything been ok, apart from the scalding incident in the shower (I kid you not, those were her words). I had to say everything was ok, and it really was, as staying there was quite funny. I just won't be back as I don't think this is a Holiday Inn; it's a low-cost B&B that's nicked some Holiday Inn signs. Great fun though! Collapse

My daughter and I stayed two nights. We booked directly with holiday inn. We were given the smallest room possible on the side with the busy road. I saw other rooms that were being cleaned- not executive- and they were much nicer and bigger..The heating was terrible, made so much noise we had to keep it off the second night. The location is good, staff were nice and breakfast ok( less choice on the Monday). I would only stay again if I was guaranteed a better room not on the road side. Collapse

Stayed here one night for work. Got the train into Piccadilly and walked to the hotel which is a fair distance although do-able. I had researched the metrolink before but there are no stations in the immediate vicinity. There are certainly many central hotels in the same price range which I would probably opt for in the future, although if you have a car you'll be fine. Reception area was nice, room was okay (although I had a bit of a frustrating time trying to iron a shirt using the pop-up iron board behind the trouser press) and things were generally clean. Thumbs in the middle. Best booked for a shorter stay if you have the car with you, or are a fan of bizarre trouser press/ironing board combos. Collapse
