We stayed at the Holiday Inn London West while down in London to see Wicked at the Victoria Apollo. The hotel was great, reasonable parking and close to the tube. Getting back after the show was a little difficult due to maintenance work on the tube but that was no fault of the hotel. Hotel and staff were great. Collapse

This hotel is about making a profit rather than making their guests feel welcomed and relaxed. THEIR POLICY IS: IN THE LOBBY AND COMMUNAL AREAS (REST AREAS) THE GUESTS CAN'T ENJOY, EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING FROM OUTSIDE THE HOTEL OR ANYTHING THAT THEY DO NOT SELL/OFFER. - This was informed to us by the operational manager after the incident we had. Nobody informed us about this policy at check in and it is not anywhere to be seen on the website (perhaps because some people may find this unacceptable and as consequence not book in). I start this review in this manner because this is their policy, nobody informs you about it when you check in. We were treated as invaders. Apparently there is a sign somewhere that informs guests of this policy around the bar area, which happens to be hard to spot because we did not see it. -The first incident: We sat down to rest, eat food and drink water after a day out in London. We then were asked to leave the lobby/resting area for guests as we had our own food and drinks (water). We were NOT in the restaurant or bar area, we were in the social/communal hotel's area. - A gentleman came to us and informed us that we had to leave with our food and that it was not allowed as it was not from the hotel, while he was not rude, it lacked any sense of customer service and hospitality. We then informed him that we were guests as it felt as if he had the impression we came in to eat and use the premises. After informing him that we were guests, he reiterated that even in that case we had to go to the room and eat our food and we could not be there eating. This was very upsetting and unpleasant. After this I said to him "don't worry we will leave" but first I will speak/complaint to reception/management. It was very disappointing to then find out that when trying to bring the complaint to reception , the nice receptionist apologised and said that the area was only for guests. I had to explain again that I was a guest and IHG Gold member. Once more, I had to explain I was a guest! which was very undermining, perhaps she did not think I was a guest because I look young ? Then she apologised and corrected herself and said that indeed we could enjoy the area as guests. This was followed by the intervention of the operational manager who interrupted her and CORRECTED HER and said that indeed we could not eat there, and that it was the hotel's policy. They were "operationally" apologetic but it felt upsetting. I decided to respect the policy and we decided to leave. Apparently the receptionist was either trying to be kind and hospitable and amend the problem, but she was misinformed about their pseudo-draconian policy. -Second incident: In the morning we had tea and snacks at the bar (products from the hotel). I was working and reading magazines on my own. I kindly informed a member of staff at the bar that I required to use the toilet and to please not remove my tea or my magazines as I would not be long (the bar area/lobby was empty). I came back to find nothing on my table , no tea, no tea pot, no magazines. The member of staff at the bar apologised and had to go get another member to try find my reading materials and magazines? It took them well over 15 minutes to find them. And it took her a while to bring back the tea pot and tea, not even offered to pour more boiling water inside. They were very apologetic. But why the staff removed my property and drink after promptly informing them I was quickly going to the bathroom, remains a mystery. We are happy to consume their products as long as we want them and we like/desire what it is on offer. But we also like to enjoy, relax, and use the rest areas of the hotel (which we paid for) without being told off because we happen to have "free will" as consumers and wanted to have something different to eat or drink. In this case, because we just happened to be hungry and tired from the day out and on the way back decided to buy take away food and enjoy it at the lobby/rest area (hypothetically designed for guests?) We travel quite often and enjoy trying different hotels, from 4 star hotel to 5 star and red star hotels. We have never been asked to either leave the lobby or take our food with us into the room. -Feedback: everything could have been so different if someone would have approached us to say something close to: "sorry sir, we have a policy for not eating food/products from other establishments. It is fine just on this occasion, may I offer you a drink from the bar or something else to accompany your meal? so that you can stay and enjoy your evening and I don't have to ask you to leave" - But nothing like this happened. We felt we were treated as invaders, and not guests. -Positives: Our stay was at room 714. The few positives the room/hotel had, and the effort from some members of staff, fades away after the distasteful incident. We were planning to stay another night but we will go to a more convenient and centrally located hotel. Lovely welcoming service from receptionist "Nainca" made us feel welcomed. I doubt I will be coming back to this hotel. It was a bad experience. Thank you. Collapse

While staying at this hotel I have experienced some great customer service! All the staff are great and it was a shame to get to the hotel tonight to see some guy giving on of the managers abuse because of a problem with his booking! The manager said to him please just calm down and not swear at him and to respect him. So he can help with is problem! The manager didn’t deserve the rude customer swearing at him! But the manager still sorted his problem as nobody wants an argument! The staff at this hotel have so much respect for there guest! Shame you get the rude customer Apart from that the rooms are great and I mainly work nights it’s not often I’m awake during the day so the night shift staff have became regular faces and know me by name and you can have a great laugh with them! All you need after a hard day at work! Get some great views of the capital from this hotel! Collapse

I have spend couple of nights in Holiday Inn London West few weeks ago. I have to say I was bit disappointed by many small things that makes big difference. First of all if there is any maintenance going on, which means the hotel is noisy, reception should inform the guest on check in, not to wait for me to call them in the morning asking what is going on. Reception does not seem to have general knowledge as I requested slippers in the room and the answer was we have no slippers in the hotel (which is not true for 4-star IHG property). Those small things would mean nothing, but the main issue was my wake up call. I was woken up 15 minutes earlier than I asked for, which makes a big difference if I have to wake up at about half past four in the morning to go to work. After speaking with the duty manager Maria - very lovely and professional lady the room move was arranged to quiet room and also slippers were in my new room already when I came. As a nice gesture from her I enjoyed the breakfast on my last day. The breakfast area is very nice, staff friendly and food very nice as well. Overall experience was very average unfortunately, I wish reception was better trained but thanks to the duty manager Maria I enjoyed the stay after all, thank you! Collapse
