The hotel grounds upon approach were very impressive, nice and clean and easy to park however, the check-in was not so impressive. There were 9 people waiting when I arrived and only 2 people on the check in desk, it took over 25 minutes to check in. Room did smell of damp and there was a rotten window with a hole in the wood, this was the source of the damp I believe. (see photographs) I complained and to be fair the desk manager sorted me out a new room and gave a free glass of wine as a gesture which was very kind. He came to my room and agreed it did smell damp. I walked down to the bar and handed in my free gold member drink voucher but was disappointed to learn that out of the 4 draught beers on offer 3 were off, so other than bottled drinks my only drought choice was Stella, so that is what I drank. It was curry night so this came recommended by the bar staff, I agreed and decided to go for the buffet curry selection however, I needed to pay in advance, okay no problem, please put it on my room, the barmaid said I need your room card, I handed it to her also giving my room number, no this is no good I need the cardboard section of the room key, I explained that it was still in the room at the other end of the hotel, I also explained that I had literally just handed in my drink voucher with my room number and date pin the back, but no she refused to accept it, at this point I almost told them to forget it but I wad very hungry and said no worries I will just put it on my credit card. I did think all of this was pretty trivial to be honest and I have never had this issue in any IHG hotel previously. The room was nice and clean with good bathroom and comfy bed, always disappointed to find an empty fridge (other than water), surely this is a mini bar? Pretty pointless having an empty fridge in my opinion. Room safe was also pointless because it was not fixed, I actually picked it up, what is that all about? Although WiFi is free connection was virtually non existent and I ended up tethering a connection via my phone in the end it was that slow. Breakfast was the usual disappointing food under heated lamps however, I ordered a nice fish omelette which was excellent. Service overall with the exception of my experience for dinner in the bar was very good. Collapse

A 2 night stay for a weekday visit to Colchester Zoo which is only 10 minutes away. The room was very clean, no complaints at all. The all you can eat breakfast was a bit expensive but worth it to not go to the local supermarket. The setting of the food venue was very pleasant with a real barn appearance and atmosphere. Would recommend to friends and family. Collapse
