The conference was in the hotel we were staying in. Checking in was a disaster, with the receptionist thinking that my colleague and I were a couple. She was rude, no hospitality information given and we had to make up our own sofa bed. We went to Marcos late and we waited an hour and half and it was inedible. That said the general manager Jason and the coffee bar lady Jan were superb with other staff being lovely. Such a shame, we had high hopes. Collapse

1 star review ... or at least it should have been! First impressions were great, plenty of parking, good location next to the airport and NEC as the name suggests and seemed a modern holiday inn with leisure facilities. We were greeted warmly by Holly who thanked me for my loyalty as an IHG Ambassador member plus ensured we were equipped with all the info needed for our stay. We were kindly upgraded to a Queen Executive - which was modern, had all the facilities needed for a short trip and well located on the ground floor up a quiet corridor. However, the room was dark and the views - well, also dark up an inside courtyard if you can even call it that (254) with a free view of someone’s Next underwear lying out the window for the mix! On a hot day in the UK (yes, I know we don’t get them often), we put the air con on to be greeted with a constant thud and buzzing noise - making it impossible to focus on anything other than that. We thought we’d open the window but it didn’t cool the room enough hence we had to resort to dealing with it, using the TV to try to drown it out a little. Next - we toyed with the idea of eating at the restaurant or ordering a takeaway, but in the end, we decided on getting room service so we could try at least to rest after our flight - and in prep for another long one the next day. Firstly, upon lifting the telephone to place the order, the phone didn’t work for the direct buttons to each department. Secondly, trying to call reception was also nearly impossible - clearly they’re busy but dialing ‘0’ for instant guest service isn’t really that instant. The reception guy transferred us to room service and our order was taken and repeated back. No issues. Within half an hour, the order arrived - with no lid to keep the food warm to start with, the server then left - before we realized - there was no cutlery at all and no accompanying fries with the burger order. The ketchup bottle provided was almost empty and worst of all, trying to get through to someone to sort the cutlery and get the fries was a nightmare - all whilst the food was getting cold. Finally, having missed our several calls, reception were proactive in calling us back and managed to get someone to sort it - but I mean, how difficult is it to get a salad and burger wrong and fail to provide eating utensils alongside it in the first place. Yes, mistakes happen and yes things go wrong - but after a tiring day, being hungry and already prepared for relaxation, added to the A/C fan and paying close to £40 for the room service - this just topped it off which was very frustrating. Let me be clear - I have no objection to paying for a service received - clearly my IHG status shows how much loyalty I’ve given the portfolio, but I can’t justify that when things fall well below the basics. However, what changes this from a 1* review to 3*, is the proactive attempt from reception to try to sort the issue in spite of their initial delays to answer - I can only imagine they were busy plus at least they did try to call back rather than leaving it (I can’t recall the guys name - sorry) but also, upon checkout, dealing with Hassan - who apologized profusely and refunded £15. The gesture was appreciated - but as it wasn’t personally his fault, I left it at that and checked out. The lesson in this is not about the mistakes but how they’re resolved or at least the attempts to do so. Sadly, in spite of the room being nice, based on the air con, the telephone not working and the horrendous room service experience, I’ll chose to stay elsewhere in future, albeit attempts to try to resolve the matter were appreciated - thanks to reception and Hassan on checkout. There’s a Crowne Plaza down the road, an Express not far and an abundance of other non-IHG hotels a little further afield. Collapse

We booked this thinking it was at the airport- it is not! The title is misleading. You had to get the free shuttle to the station and then use the free shuttle to the airport. I'll make sure I book the ibis at the airport next time where I can walk across the road to the airport. It was a non smoking hotel but our floor stank of smoke and in the restaurant the exit doors were kept open so the smoke from the smokers outside drifted right onto our table! The food was less than mediocre with tiny portions and not great taste with a high-end price tag. The room was fine and the staff at the check in were great but I wouldn't stay again. Oh yeah and we had paid for breakfast as part of the deal but because our flight left early we couldn't have the buffet and ended up with a banana and an uncooked croissant each! There was coffee for my hubby but I don't like coffee or tea so there was orange squash on offer! not great for what they charge. I had to ask for a bottle of water to get something to drink. And to top it off we went to bed hoping for a good nights sleep before an early flight and the receptionist rang us at 12am asking had we called them! This could not have got much worse! Collapse

I have stayed here before and I reviewed it when I did and it was awful! In fact I have avoided it ever since and vowed I’d never return, but sometimes in life your choices are removed. So I booked a room and thought I’d walk in dump my bag and leave spending as little time as possible there! I park in the car park walk in and I’m immediately greeted my a friendly helpful my of staff! Hmmm it’s gonna get worse I know!! I’m given directions to the lifts and my room. The hallway was unbelievably hot so here it begins it’s gonna be terrible again!! I enter my room and it was completely different from my previous visit! The room was clean tidy and well appointed with great aircon! I flop onto the bed and it’s awesomely comfy! On the strength of this I decided to grab a bite in the bar and that also was surprising for a hotel bar! This hotel has hugely improved in the last couple of years. Collapse
