The most important thing in a hotel is the bed, it was sunken in the middle. Room 110 is a large room, spacious. The hairdryer overheats after 1 minute and is awful (very outdated and stuck to wall), the shower experience was poor. I expected a comfy bed from this chain of Hotels. The Bed meant no sleep (PLEASE GET NEW BEDS- its far more comfy in a premier inn as they have bed standards!) - this is key, yes is needs an overhaul, relaunching, bar was dead for a Friday night, food was expensive but poor quality- edible though! The bar people didn't have a clue, served 2 wine glasses for prosecco, didnt even cork the bottles and pour. Had to request bucket and ice. Then upon re-ordering more drinks made same mistakes again. Reception staff - lovely, porter was lovely, Easy check in and out. Fab gym next door (dont forget to take towels from hotel reception with you as gym does not provide) Collapse

I stayed 1 night on business and it was fine. Large reception area plenty of sofa's etc for relax, business chat but hotel was relatively quiet. Room was fine, usual HI standards, quite wide so quite a bit of room. I ate in the bar had F&C which was fine, but the seats are uncomfortable to eat at around the edge, too low and the tables in the middle are too close to the bar, so it feels like you are eating in the middle and people drinking close. There is a restaurant where I had breakfast (which was ok) but I am not sure if it was open for evening meals. I found it a comfortable stay. Next door is Bannatyne's Gym with complimentary membership while staying at hotel. Collapse
Classic example of a Holiday Inn that needs a major overhaul including some of the staff.

I'm an IHG "Spire Elite" member, that's because I use this chain of hotels a lot mainly for their convenience in locations and ease of booking. I get to see a lot of the IHG hotels and this is another classic motorway hotel that's sadly going to die if they don't sort it out. This evening I took a late decision to book a room in the area. The only option available to me in this area was this hotel in a twin bedded room (I'm not size suited to single beds!). I arrived and checked in with a courteous member of staff. I asked to see if there were any other rooms available with a larger bed. I was told that my room was the last available room but I was offered to cancel without penalty. I took the room. On arrival at the room I could see that the two single beds were linkable and this would make my night more comfy(couldn't they have mentioned this at check-in?). I relocated the bedside table and hooked the two beds together. This was really a plus for me as it meant I could stretch out in bed and be so much more comfortable. Overall the room was very tired and dated, I would've expected a lot more for a charge of £100 B&B in Barnsley. Old fashioned tv, dated bathroom, well worn furniture and an ironing board without an iron. No A/C which on a fairly warm night made it somewhat more uncomfortable. After sorting my bed out myself I decided to go get some food in the restaurant. Sadly this was something of a miserable looking place where clearly it's designed for the function of eating rather than enjoying a meal. The majority of the staff were helpful but to be honest not that well trained in how to work in a restaurant, in my opinion. The menu looked like something that had been badly designed, and not updated since the 90s. I took the safe option, in my eyes, of a sirloin steak. I like my steak blu. My meal was delivered fairly quickly and didn't look too bad, although for £21 I think it could've been presented better. Sadly the steak was over cooked and more like medium to well done. Head waiter came over and replaced the meal. Second steak was much better but it was nothing special for the money. After my single course I decided to have another drink in the lounge bar. I had a voucher for a drink and asked for a glass of red wine. I wasn't given a choice of which wine until I asked. Generally the staff behind the bar were not that interested. For my second drink I waited for over 5 minutes, there were other people waiting at the bar too. I went to reception to ask for service and somebody came to help. At 11pm we were told that the lounge bar was closing and that we couldn't stay there and had to move out to the reception area. I left my drink and went to my room and to my self made decent sized bed. This hotel I think is prime for a make-over from IHG and my goodness it needs it. I know that most, but not all, of the staff were trying really hard. In this day and age customer service is so important and I think that there is a lot of training and support needed for the staff here to get them to a decent level. There is nothing I like to see more than someone with passion for their work. Came back to my room, and to my now Comfy bed, and as I am writing this someone went to the toilet above me the noises were clear to hear and the moment the toilet was flushed was scary behind belief, I honestly thought the contents of the toilet were being deposited inside of my bathroom. Thankfully when I checked it was just noise......thankfully! It's not the worst hotel but it needs help. Collapse

We stayed here on 21st July 2017 on the night of our wedding, the hotel itself is very clean and very welcoming as you arrive. When we checked in I was in my wedding dress with my wife and just wanted an easy check in. This was not the case. We were told that we either had to pay the full amount of the room at the time of check in or a pre authorisation on my card. We opted for a pre authorisation just imagining that they would store card details to set up a credit account to settle upon check out, again this was not the case - the receptionist wanted to take a pre authorisation of £125- our room Was only £85 for the night and we was only using the room as a base to sleep as we had our evening reception at night time, we didn't intend on ordering food and drink and billing it to the room. I explained this to the receptionist but she stated this was what they had to do so I went ahead and paid the amount for the room instead. The room itself was very clean and spacious and very practical for what we needed for my wedding dress and suits etc, we wish we would have been told before arriving that we had full access to bannatynes spa next door because this would have been a great deal but unfortunately anyone had failed to inform me that this was the case - this could be done through email. The bed was a little too soft but otherwise we had a great sleep. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and the waitress' were fantastic. Was excellent value for money and it was all delicious with a lot of choice. We would stay again although there were a few little glitches. Collapse

Loved it, there were a few functions on over the weekend but they were happy, fun weddings and some sort of 80s night, friendly bunch, we felt really welcome. Breakfast was excellent, use of the health club a fab bonus. We're definitely staying here next time we're down. Happily recommend it. Collapse
