Taking the wife away for a romantic Valentine weekend. Arrived at what I thought was a 4 star hotel. Decent size double room and it was just a double bed but when we sat up on the bed to have a drink and watch TV it rolls away from the wall. After this continued to happen the missus decided to use my trainers to put under the wheels, see photo, it stopped rolling now but probably damaged my trainers! Gets worse at night.... stay away from room 409. The mattress is horrendous, you can almost feel springs and the pillows, well, a waste of time. There those big soft fluffy ones which just go flat as a pancake when you put your head on them so I got my towel to put under them. (2 pillows) for a 4 star hotel there were no more pillows in the wardrobe. Got to say, you no your in for a good night sleep at a premier inn with pillow choices too (but I wanted to spoil the missis so we came to a Hilton). Surely a hotel like this can afford a good new mattress, good pillows with spares and a choice in the wardrobe. Oh and the wife just made a cuppa and said 'I'm surprises there's no biscuits!' Quick snack yesterday was a £14 club sandwich!!! Very nice but £14, come on. Were in Yorkshire not London. On the whole a nice trip away but certainly not a 4 star room experience. Tv programme Room 101 is now Room 409. Stay away from it!!!! Collapse
Great Hotel but there's no excuse for a 10% mandatory service charge for a meal for one

This is a great hotel. Second time I've stayed here, and it's elegant, clean and light. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, the staff obliging, friendly and efficient. The hotel overlooks the canal: I didn't, I went for a walk along it, and very nice it is too. Although it's a walkable distance from the railway station, I took a taxi - there are some major roads to cross, so I wouldn't recommend walking unless you know the area well. I got a great night's sleep, and the buffet cooked-breakfast was pretty good. Plus points also for the free 'emergency toothbrush and toothpaste' kit for the poorly-prepared idiot traveller (me). So it's a shame that my main feeling towards my stay at the Hilton is rage. This was caused not by anyone I met there but by an ill-conceived charging policy in the restaurant. Not the first time I've come across it (which is no mitigation, in my view) but they charge a mandatory 10% for service. I expect it's there on the menu somewhere, but I didn't see it. It's not even the money - I was there for work and the 10% took me over my allowance by £1.70. I would have left more than that as a tip, out of my own pocket. It's the principle. I had to queue up and pay the £1.70 in the morning when I checked out - that's an inconvenience I didn't need when I was trying to get to work. Also, I hate the underhandedness of the whole thing. I had lamb sous vide with parsnips and herb mash. Very nice it was, too. It was on the menu for £19.90, but cost an additional £1.99 i.e. £21.89. Same thing with my pint of lager (same principle, not the same cost, it was about £4.30, so actually £4.73). If they'd just put those prices on the menu, I would have paid them and I wouldn't now be angry: I'd have enjoyed my meal and I wouldn't have vowed not to set foot inside an otherwise lovely hotel for as long as I can find an alternative. Customer service at this hotel is out of this word. We had a number of issues in full due to tesco. The hotels direct number provided excellent service due to tesco not confirming the booking as it was outside tesco time lines. After a call to the hotel and explaining the situation we where given the reception desk managers name and told to ask for them. We arrived and asked for the given manager who had in advance called tesco and had the same response we had. She contracted tesco while we where there and confirmed our voucher was valid but tesco did not give the hotel the validation code to process this. The manager said they would deal with this on Monday. At this point she informed us that she was able to give us a complimentary room up grade and breakfast due to Tesco’s incompetence. A issue with our room happened about 10pm, a call to reception lead to a new room key issued (next door) all our stuff stayed in the same room as we were told we could keep both rooms. On checking out we where asked off any other offerings were required due to the room move, we declined this as the service was so good. I would go back to this hotel any time, the premium to others in the area is worth every penny. Book this hotel! If using tesco vouchers be aware at Tesco’s end of delays and issues with admin. My son and daughter in law had a small intimate wedding earlier this week. They and a few family members booked rooms at the hotel and it was arranged for us to have a meal after the wedding ceremony. Despite booking a 3 course meal for just over a dozen people, it was a lovely surprise to see that we had been provided with our own private area of the lounge/bar and that the table had been set up with balloons, bowls of flowers, table confetti and even little favours. The meal was excellent and particularly the cheesecake was delicious. The staff serving us were great (sorry i can't remember your names) and we were very well looked after. I cannot comment on the rooms or the rest of the facilities but from what the family said they seemed happy with their stay. Based on my visit to the hotel i wouldn't hesitate to return or to recommend to others and would like to thank the staff for their efforts in making my son and daughter in law's wedding day even more special.
