We stayed at Hilton Malta 8 nights. It was our first visit to Malta; we were there more to see the sights than to relax by the pool. I am still undecided whether staying in St. Julians was a better idea than staying in Valletta as it took over 1/2 hour by bus to get into Valletta and then for other destinations on the island, we had to change buses at the Valletta bus station. Traffic is horrid. The hotel appears to cater to a wide spectrum of guests from families w/ kids to honeymooners to business types to sightseers. There are several dining rooms, 4 swimming pools and over 400 rooms and suites. It's clean and comfortable. The decor is eclectic; our room was decorated in mid-century modern with white and multicolored formica furniture. The location is on the sea and curves around to overlook a small marina. A couple blocks away is a bus stop for public buses going into Valletta. The Hop-On Hop-Off bus also stops nearby. There are a number of restaurants nearby in addition to what the hotel has. We ate breakfast at the lavish buffet each morning in the Oceana Room and had 2 very good dinners there as well. Wi-fi is fairly slow in the rooms. The sliding glass doors to the balcony don't have screens so you cannot leave them open and must use air-conditioning for ventilation. Besides the lovely swimming pool area, what sets this hotel apart from myriad other resort properties is the staff. They are friendly, helpful, courteous, good humored and really seem to want to make your stay enjoyable. Collapse

Again, despite all problems in the previous years, we returned to this hotel. Infront of the hotel no porter was seen. We took our luggage out of the car and carried it in the hall. Check-In: It was handled promtly. I put a passport and an ID-card on the desk. I have presented my booking confirmation showing that the room was booked for sea view, 3 days, 2 people, breakfast included and prepaid. Then she took my ID-card and noticed the number on the registration form. I am 100% sure that the software in her computer is showing the same. Then I was asked : "Are you traveling alone?" I answered: "No as you can see from the booking and the passport which is still laying on the desk." Then I was asked - although the room was prepaid - for my credit card. I handed it over. Then she put it into the card reader and gave me the machine with her order that I should fill in my pin code. I said that this includes that I shall get charged with an amount. Of course it was not told what fore I should get charged! I said that I don't want it. Then she answered that the Mini Bar will get closed and of course I agreed with that. Then I needed to pay an amount of 3 € for a stay of 3 days. I got told that this should be for security!? Of course I only got my receipt after asking for it. Then we got the key card for our room. Guess what? We received the cheaper room category: Yacht port! The price difference is about : 35 € per day! After this experience I at once returned to the female manager on duty who already knows me from the previous year. She went to the reception desk and returned telling me that we should have a seat and wait 3 minutes. She said that giving me a room of lower category was not a mistake what I have not understood. Now I asked her about a compensation for the mistake of the reception staff. She looked irritated and astonished. She said nothing. So we sat down in the lobby. After 5 minutes a server appeared and asked us for our wish for drinks. We said that we don't want to make an order. Then we got informed that this should be an invitation. Because of this we ordered 2 glasses of white wine. It was served fast with a temperature of about + 16° C instead of + 6-8 ° C. So I have asked a different server to exchange the wines which was done prompt. At once we saw from outside the glasses that this wine was cold with the right temperature. So everybody can see from outside if the white wine in the bottle or in the glass has the right temperature! After 20 minutes ( 3 minutes were announced from the manager) we got our room key cards from the female Manager on Duty. We also got informed that we now get invited for the Executive Lounge. Then we entered the elevator. To reach upper floors you need your key cards to contact the card reader. On arrival at our room the brand new keycards (2 pieces) which we just have used in the elevator were not working to open the locked door! So I needed to go back to the reception to get new programmed key cards! When entering our renovated room nr. 730 we became shocked about the interior design in this 5 Star Hotel! To describe it: It reminds me at Ikea. It has a very simple design which cheap materials. I opened the balcony door not knowing that the door was locked! With other words the lock was not working! At first glance you will not know that the lock for the door is fixed at the top of the window frame. When entering the balcony I saw that the former guests, who have stayed in this room, have forgotten to take away the little blue shirt from their child. They have put it over the hand rail. So I took this little blue shirt and brought it to a male room cleaner. His comment was that this shirt was flying from an upper floor directly on the hand rail from our balcony. Then the wind has put this shirt in a correct way and position over the hand rail of our balcony. Now I went back to our room to the toilet in our bathroom. The toilet is integrated in the bathroom. There is no door to separate the toilet! The toilet paper has 2 layers. Then I saw that the toilet was not cleaned in a correct way. Some brown excrements were on the ceramic! I have removed part of it with a tissue and took a picture. Then again I went to the cleaning man and I got told that this is rust! Then a cleaning lady arrived and I have shown it to her. Now she said that she is unble to remove it and she want to call her supervisor. I said that I can remove it and have shown it to her. Because of this she left and returned with a small card. It was a little voucher for getting 2 free drinks. This was a nice gesture. What a pity that my family name written on this card was totally wrong. Then the management has given us a big plate with fruits. What a nightmare to see that 2 fruits (one apple and one orange) were rotten. I took pictures. On the rotten apple it was a size of 3 cm! In addition for two guests we got one (!!) smaĺl desert placed on the table. The first day of our stay we got 2 bottles of mineral water (0,2 l). If you want more you can buy it. Next to your bed you also will find a price list what you can order for your room. You can rent an additonal pillow and need to pay for it. You can rent a plug to fight against Moscitos and need to pay for it. It is long list of offers. The bed was making loud cracking noises when you lay down or move your body. On the sideboard we found an information card of the hotel in big letters saying welcome. After 24 hours I saw that inside there was written a personally text from the management. But this is done not in a professional way because normally nobody would have the idea that there can be a text on the back side. Then there is an aditional standy (stand up display) saying when a problem is appearing or you are unsatisfied the hotel wants to hear it and it will solve that problem. Now we went to the Excecutive Lounge to have a coffee. It was 5:30 p.m. I went to the coffee machine. I pressed the button for Espresso. But it was not working. I have tried it 5 times but still it was not working. Staff was not seen. Within a period of 30 minutes nobody has removed plates from the table! At 6:00 p.m. The door was opened to get some drinks or snacks. The choice was poor. Even the snacks were poor. But it is up to everybody to have a different opinion. But at least it is depending on the room rate and the rate for an upgrade to get access to the loung. For this opportunity the guest has to pay. Then we went to the concierge. We asked him which Bus lines are running to Valletta. We got told that the Bus lines 13,14,15 are running to Valletta. He has handed over a printed map and has marked the Bus lines. Guess what, we took Bus line 16 (!!) to Valletta. This line is displayed at the Bus Stop and marked with the destination of Valletta. The next day I have applied to get an appointment with the manager of duty. It appeared Mrs. H. from Germany. I have informed her about each additional problems in our room. I also remembered that she said that to give us a lower cheaper room category was a "small mistake". Not to forget: The sea view room is about 35,00 € per day more expensive than the given room category of Yacht Port. Of course she informed me that the fruits on the plate get controlled and renewed every day. Curious that another 30 hours the rotten fruits were not exchanged or renewed!! The last day the rotten apple was removed and not renewed. But the rotte orange was forgotten to be removed. I took a picture. The bed was still making noises. Breakfast. The guests need to queue at the entrance of the restaurant. Up to more (!) than 10 people needed to wait to be seated. Why? When you sit inside we saw that more than 30 tables were available and free! When we were seated we saw that there was only cutlery for one person on the table. So I have shown it to the Asian female server. Then she brought us the cutlery for two! Now one of us were able to eat with 2 forks and knifes. Then I ordered coffee and separate a pot of milk. I got the coffee but the milk was forgotten. The same has happened the next day! Then a female server has cleaned the wet and dirty table next to our table. With the same dirty wet grimy cloth (rag?, lobe?) she then has cleaned the bench! Empty plates with food and marmelade were not refilled! Check Out: Nobody has asked us for guest satisfaction or has expressed the wish that customers/guests should return. My individual subjectived rating: Service: 2 points Ambiance and quality of room: 2 points Value for money: 2 points Check In: 2 points Check out: 2 points Location: 4 points Collapse

We’ve just returned from a 3 night break to the Hilton Malta in St Julian’s, travelling as a group of 10 to celebrate my mum’s 70th (6 adults and 4 kids). The hotel is beautiful - definitely a 5 star. We have stayed in a lot of Hilton’s and I think this is the best so far. The hotel was beautifully decorated and I really loved the Oceana restaurant for breakfasts and the lovely outdoor bar overlooking the sea. The rooms were also lovely and had everything we needed including robes, tea/coffee. We spent a lot of time by the pool relaxing with the children. The only negative I would point out was that the pool was extremely cold for the kids to play in. There is the option of using the indoor pool but we all wanted to enjoy the sun so it wasn’t our preference. Overall, although the children were welcomed , I wouldn’t say this was an ideal hotel for kids. The park and baby pool are more aimed at toddler age. Additionally. It’s quite an upmarket adult hotel and I was continually worried that our noisy kids would disturb the peace around the pool. (They got a few looks). However, the food is lovely, the staff were extremely nice, the service was excellent and the hotel beautiful. I would definitely recommend for a visit. The hotel is located right next to a lovely but quiet marina. A few mins walk will take you to the bigger harbour with a range of restaurants including a Costa etc. Top tip: the hotel is right next to the Portomaso shopping centre with a supermarket which is part of the Waitrose group so plenty of Waitrose products if you need anything or want to pick up a snack!!
