Looking at a map, I was a little worried that this hotel was going to be a bit out of walking range for many activities in Helsinki, but it turned out not to be the case. Getting here from the airport is also quite easy by cab and takes about 30 minutes. Note if you're going by taxi, look into the Airport Taxi service (they have kiosks in the airport with big yellow signs) as you'll save a considerable amount of money. From the western ferry terminal, it's anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes by cab, depending on traffic, though if you're not carrying luggage you can also walk from the hotel to the ferry terminal in 30-45 minutes. The rooms at this hotel are fine. The bed is comfortable, the bathroom has a nice deep tub and shower, and the rooms are quiet. I have stayed in a river view and a city view room, and truth be told, there's not really a lot of difference between the two. There is a fitness room, but it's nothing above and beyond what you'll see in many Hilton/Marriot lower-end chains (think Hampton or Fairfield Inn here). Treadmills, ellipticals, and a few weights pretty much sum it up. There is a restaurant in the lobby and it's fine if you want to stay in, but there are better options a short walk across the river. Convenient to get to as only 10-15mins from station. Efficient check in. Nicely renovated rooms with good views. Small executive lounge, however never too busy. Breakfast good, service efficient. Recommended.

I scheduled a two-night stopover en route from Asia to the US just to see what Helsinki was like. The Hilton Helsinki Strand was more expensive than some of the other options, but from the web site and reviews it looked like a luxury hotel in a great location. Neither of these things turned out to be exactly true, but I still had a pleasant stay. First, the location: the good news is that if you don't have too much luggage you can take a city bus from the airport that lets you off a couple of blocks from the Hilton. The bad news is that the Hilton is a 15-to-20-minute walk from most of the interesting churches, monuments, museums, parks, and other interesting things there are to see in Helsinki. I visited in early September and it was already quite cold and windy, so walking wasn't as much fun as it sometimes is. The hotel's location away fro the city center also means that even if you get a room with the very best view, this will consist of a river and a bridge and a few pleasant buildings but will not include any of the Gothic and Oriental domes and spires and spectacular vistas that make Helsinki's skyline so fascinating. The rooms and public spaces are also pleasant and comfortable but not luxurious. Think of a Hilton in a US suburb or near a small airport in the Midwest rather than the Beverly Hilton or the Hilton Singapore. The quality of the staff is what makes the difference between a good hotel and a great one, and the Hilton Helsinki Strand is somewhere in the middle. I arrived at about 9 a.m., several hours before the official check-in time, and the front desk staff were courteous and helpful. They said it would be a while before my room was ready but that in the meantime I could have access to the Executive Lounge. Unfortunately, it turned out that the lounge was poorly staffed -- apparently the person who was supposed to work that morning had not shown up and they did not have a backup plan -- and there wasn't much for breakfast, and the coffee machine was broken. So I went back downstairs to see what I could get in the restaurant, but it turned out the breakfast buffet was already over. (I forget whether it had closed at 9 or 9:30, but in any event it was way too early.) However, a sweet and resourceful waitress managed to get me a cup of coffee and a couple of pastries. In the evening the lounge was fully staffed and had a good selection of snacks and drinks. It's a small lounge and was therefore crowded. On one of the two evenings of my stay the lounge was dominated by a group of a dozen people traveling together who got louder and more obtrusive with each round of drinks, but this can happen anywhere. The hotel also has a small but adequate exercise room with a couple of small saunas. One pleasant surprise is that the Hilton is right around the corner from Sen Chay, which is perhaps the only Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant in Finland. I had a pleasant stay, and because I used the Hilton Honors cash-plus-points payment plan the price I paid was quite reasonable. So long as you're not expecting more than a clean and comfortable hotel that's not too far from the places you'll want to visit, the Hilton should be fine. Collapse
