Tired old lady of the Highlands

As frequent visitors to Coylimbridge Hotel over the past forty years we are disappointed that this potentially great hotel is tired, drab and in need of a major injection in its rooms, corridors and pool changing facilities.

When we arrived no one helped us with all of our bags. We had ski equipment, 5 children, 2 are toddlers and we were on the 2nd floor with no lift. No heater or extractor fan in bathroom. On a ski holiday, freezing cold weather, taking clothes off to shower in a bathroom with no heater wasn't pleasant. The radiator in the children's room didn't work. They did provide us with a portable radiator when we informed them. The dust and dirt in the rooms was disgusting. I have uploaded some photos to show how dirty my hand was after running it over the top of the headboard and mirror. I didn't do anymore because my hand was so filthy. The top bunk bed was broken. Serious health and safety issues. Have attached photo. No drying room to dry ski gear at the end of the day so we were drying gloves etc on radiators in our room. Bizarre rule of adults only from 5-7 in swimming pool. Peak time when kids would want to go in? And the slide that is open for 20 minutes on the hour, every hour, apart from that it's closed. Pool was too cold to be comfortable in. You can't actually swim to keep warm because there's no laned off area. Showers are draughty and cold. Swimming was just an entirely unpleasant experience, because it was not warm enough. Collapse

Pricey but you can't beat the location. Close to Deer attraction and close to the funicular which goes up the mountain for skiing. Close to town centre and the charming railway. Recommend for families oh and great indoor heated pool!

First of all, this hotel is in a great location for families visiting Aviemore. It's situated on the road to Cairngorm mountain and a short drive or walk from the town itself, with ample car parking. The building itself looks distinctly 1960s though there is nothing wrong with that. The interior seems to have last been renovated in the late 90s and looks tired, especially in the accommodation wing of the hotel. The bedroom we had was comfortable but basic, especially for a Hilton hotel. For example - Only one bedside plug socket between the 2 beds, and it required the alarm clock to be unplugged. - TV with clunky Hilton Hotel interface making it difficult to change channels. No sound available on STV either - Hot water ran out in bathroom - No soap dispenser, only soap bar - No mini bar or fridge - No aircon, just radiator and window to regulate room temperaute (to be honest I prefer this versus a noisey aircon system but it's another indicator of the hotels date) We stayed at the hotel for Valentine's weekend. As stated elsewhere the hotel is very child friendly so is not ideal for a quiet couples weekend but it was still possible to escape to the excellent Woodshed bar for a drink by the fire whilst watching the football on TV. The pool area also needs upgrading somewhat. Two pools exist but there appears to be no segregation as to which one is a fun pool or a swimmers pool. Apart from the sauna, no spa type facilities exist, only jet bubbles in a corner of the pool. A real jacuzzi and steam room would be a great addition. The gym could do with some extra weights and more modern cardio equipment too. Food wise the hotel does an excellent breakfast, with healthy and 'traditional' choices as well as a waffle machine which was delicious. For dinner, the Inverdruie and Bistro restaurants have a varied menu which should keep everyone happy. We had the fillet steak from the Bistro which was cooked to perfection. For me though the saviour of the hotel is its staff, who despite the busy weekend were friendly, attentive and professional at all times. I had a small complaint about something I ate from the kitchen and it was dealt with quick and effciently by the management. Given the strong profitability of the Hilton Hotel group, I cannot understand why they do not invest in bringing this property into the 21st century. I wonder if there is less appetite for hotels in Aviemore in favour of the growing number of private lodge and cottage hires. I would return to this hotel but in hope of some improvements having been made. Collapse
