I visited LA over the weekend just to get away and found a great rate at the Hilton Checkers. The hotel is located in downtown LA, which is not a spot I ever thought of staying while in LA, The location, however, turned out to be very central. I splurged on the valet because I wanted access to my car, but you can park elsewhere at substantial savings. No in-and-out privileges at the other lots, however. The valet staff responded promptly when I called for my car. Check in was also easy and I was up to my room in minutes. The Checkers is a beautiful hotel. The lobby is small, but the hallways and decor are very attractive and give the hotel an expensive feel. I stayed in room 202 and loved it. The room is at the end of the hall, facing the street. You could hear some muffled street noise, but I found the room being at the end of the hall very private and quiet. The room itself is on the smallish side, but had plenty of space to move around. It features a king sized bed with nice linens and attractive furnishings in dark wood. The star of this room, however, was the bathroom - huge by hotel standards, with a full sized tub, marble floors and a large window that looked out onto the street (large shutters provided privacy) A full length mirror on the door was a nice touch and with so much room, you could actually check yourself out. The staff were uniformly helpful and friendly. I unwound in the lobby bar one evening. The lighting is subdued and lots of seating choices where you can tuck yourself away and relax or chat with friends. I had two glasses of a good quality wine that came to $17, a typical price. The rooftop deck is small, but has several seating areas and a jacuzzi-sized pool. Several couples cozied up with one another and took in the view in the evening. Very romantic. Downtown LA is not the dreary, blighted spot of yesteryear. A number of nice restaurants, pubs and nightclubs have popped up downtown and the streets at night were packed with tourists and residents alike. There are lots of homeless and other characters on the street in the evening, and some streets could use some sprucing up. Still, the downtown area pulses at night. About three blocks down from the hotel is a bottle shop that sold wine and other spirits. It's a fun shop to visit. The other ubiquitous presence any time you go to LA is the motion picture and television industry. One night a film crew took up an entire street down the block. In the morning, another crew were busy outside the nearby Starbucks, filming an actress delivering a monologue of some sort. It was fun to watch the action while sipping my flat white. I look forward to staying at this hotel again when I am next in LA. Thanks to the Hilton Checkers staff! Collapse
A good boutique hotel in LA

This hotel has lovely rooms and the restaurant is excellent, but expensive. The hot tub on the roof affords a beautiful view of the city. There is no hotel store, so be sure to bring the items you need with you.

Very convenient location to all surroundings, quick service to any request. Everyone was very kind and helpful. Hotel is clean and comfortable. I would recommend this hotel when staying in LAX downtown for any of the district shopping. The Valet parking made it easy to park and leave every day.... They pay attention to the smallest request, I asked they leave extra coffee in the room each day, and that is exactly what they did. Thank you for making this trip enjoyable.... Collapse

Room seemed bigger than normal. Extremely high class furnishings. Very helpful staff. Suggest travelers join the Hilton Honor's program to get extra perks. Very clean and close to Pershing Square overnight parking garage if using a rental car...:-) Since the room seemed oversized and had a very fancy desk, the problem was lack of lighting for the desk area at night. Daylight lighting was fine. It has a safe and it also has some nice and ample dressers. The bar was very pretty and the lounge chairs were very comfortable. Did not need to use the wi-fi or coffee machine so can't comment but the coffee machine should brew 2 cups at a time...:-) Note: The hotel was a great value for the price since booked via a convention rate. If paying top tier rate the bang for the buck might be less due to the lack of night lighting for business travel. Such a simple solution exists to solve this. Collapse
