We were very impressed by the hotel staff. On arrival the receptionist told us that there was a wedding and gave us a room well away from the wedding party. It was very quiet and we had a long undisturbed sleep. Waiting staff were also very friendly and attentive, even on the night when the wedding took place. My only little gripe was that they had no tomato juice for the Bloody Mary ordered on the Friday night, but this was rectified the following night. Overall very impressed by SuperBreak and the Hickstead Hotel. Collapse

Sad demise of a "Classic".

We have stayed at the Hickstead two or three times a year for the last 5 years and have, unhappily, seen it go down and down. It has never been top notch but it has so much potential that we just kept hoping that the owners would decide to invest in this property. Clearly this isn't about to happen and it's unlikely we'll stay there again. The hotel could be really lovely and to see the neglect is very sad. The location is fabulous, the staff have always been excellent and very professional although, sadly, many have now left or are leaving. The restaurant is, still, surprisingly good for an out of town 3* hotel. However, the rooms! They are in urgent need of renovation, especially the bathrooms where black mould is now the norm. That said, they are clean, just very scruffy and unloved. Yes, they apparently do a good trade in conferences etc. and this must be how they stay afloat but the hotel guests seem to be incidental and, allowing the bedrooms to become so run down, just shows disrespect for Classic Lodge's loyal clients, like us. I'd love to read a glowing review this time next year to the effect that the place has been smartened up and looking great. Collapse

Firstly I have to say the hotel setting is lovely. Peacefully set in the countryside with great surroundings. I don’t like to be negative but feel I have to comment. Firstly reception staff should be warm and welcoming. Didn’t feel this at all. The bathroom in our room smelt of urine , I went to mention it at reception but unfortunately another room wasn’t available , however we were offered a discount off our evening meal. I was surprised the lady in reception didn’t come to the room to smell for herself, it was as if she already knew!! If you are vegetarian the menu for dinner only offers one dish. I’m afraid to say this tasted like a ready meal! The wine list could also do with updating. The staff at breakfast were lovely but appeared rather stressed. This hotel would be lovely if it were to be updated and customer care was a priority. The setting is fantastic. However I don’t feel enough is being done to maximise would could be a first class hotel. Collapse

We were in the area as my wife was on a business course nearby. The Hickstead was a good choice for a one night stay. Set in a quiet rural area with plenty of free on site parking. Spacious, well appointed room, which was Spotlessly clean. So a big thumb's up to the housekeeping staff for that. Friendly staff at check in which was without delay. We ordered evening meals from the room service menu and were very impressed with the food quality, quantity and the speed of service. All faultless. In the morning, breakfast was a relaxed affair with a buffet of hot cooked items and a range of juices and continental pastries, cereals etc. Check out was set for 11am but as I wasn't feeling well I asked for a later checkout and 1 o'clock was agreed. This was done with no extra charge, so a big thanks for that. We will be back in the area in a few weeks time for another course for my wife and would not hesitate in choosing The Hickstead again. The picture is an interior view of our room but the hotel does present itself well as you approach up the drive. A good choice. We'll be back. Collapse

Stayed March 2018, one night. £90 room only When you first approach this property, you have this feeling that you're arriving somewhere really rather special. The entrance and driveway are almost grand and beautifully laid out and then you reach the front door to discover everything else is a bit of a let-down. I'm going to overlook the fact that the hotel separately tried to overcharge me, first for the pre-paid room on arrival and then for dinner the next day. Perhaps these things happen and they did remedy the bill without fuss. What surprises me is that the published photos do seem to be quite genuine and yet do so little to convey the tired state of this place. They claim the rooms are decorated in a contemporary style but the brochure must have been written c. 1975. And there seems to have been very little updating or maintenance since. Therefore, and especially given other local hotels in which I've stayed for quite a bit less (and including breakfast,) I thought the accommodation really poor value overall. Worn and dirty carpeting, mouldy shower seals and decaying furniture are just not acceptable. Not wishing to be totally negative, it is certainly quiet which is a blessing and I did sleep well. I also can't fault the breakfast, that was a very pleasant surprise - plentiful and well-priced (on its own.) If the price point were rather lower, I suppose I'd consider staying here again. But with so many more appealing and cheaper options locally, I doubt it. Collapse

I review hotels frequently and don’t like to give bad reviews but I am always very honest and unfortunately this hotel was pretty dreadful! I cannot believe the good reviews and ratings it has....they sound like a different hotel! When you arrive at the hotel it looks nice from the outside and is off the main road so in a quiet place. When we arrived there was a wedding ongoing. We checked in and found the lady on reception to be very unwelcoming and unfriendly. We thought she must have been busy or stressed but she was still like that later on. Our room was average, it was clean however the net at the window had rust staining along the bottom. The bathroom tiles had been broken and looked like they had just been put back on with blu tack! The rooms were not sound proof at all. In the morning we awoke to the sound of someone having a wee and breaking wind in the room above us!! We went out to nearby Burgess Hill for the evening and returned around 11pm. We ordered sandwiches from the 24hr menu to be told that that wasn’t actually 24hrs as there was no chef!! After complaining we were eventually given sandwiches. The one positive thing about the hotel was the lady serving at breakfast - she was very friendly and talkative. Unfortunately the breakfast itself wasn’t great and one of my friends was served a very under cooked poached egg! All in all we won’t be returning - we paid £137 for a night and I don’t think it was worth even half of that unfortunately. Collapse
