The hotel staff were excellent from start to finish and we were very pleased with the quality of our room. However, we were disappointed with the limited dinner menu - although the food was o.k. it certainly was uninspiring - basically chicken and chips, burger, steak, risotto and one fish dish. On our second night we were unable to find a chair to sit on in the bar before dinner as a wedding party completely filled it leaving no room for other residents. We would certainly use this hotel again but will check to see if there is a wedding on during future stays. Collapse

We stayed in this hotel for two nights for a weekend break. From the moment we arrived to an empty reception desk (which was very rarely staffed over the weekend), we felt that there was no care and attention to guests or the hotel experience. We are amazed it has a four star rating. Staff did arrive at the blank desk which looked like a serving station, we received no welcome, just a checking-in, no offer of help with our bags, and tortuous directions to get to our room via a lift and two corridors. We later discovered we could have got to our room via a short staircase that was right there! Throughout our stay we saw how staff seemed harassed and stressed. They also, without exception, told us what 'team' they worked in, and often used this as a reason for not being able to sort something, rather than taking responsibility. They worked in silos. We had paid for DBB for the first night and I had asked for the complimentary bottle of Prosecco to be in the room. It was, but it was cheaper sparkling wine which wasn't very nice or sparkling. We were told we had to eat it in the bar, as there weren't enough people to fill the restaurant. The restaurant was rather like a canteen in any case, so perhaps this wasn't a bad thing. The bar was ok, as long as you could seat yourself away from the TV screens which were always on. The food was quite nice, but not generous and not exactly hot. My partner actually mentioned this and excuses were made and he politely pointed out that the plates were cold which didn't help. The staff member replied 'Yes, cold plates' as if that was the way they liked to do things. We were offered chips in recompense. The waitress didn't know what cheese was on the menu. We took our pudding in the small lounge area, and sat down, as I saw other people do with shock over the weekend, on one of the hardest and most uncomfortable sofas ever! Our room was called a suite, but was not. It was a room with a bathroom. It looked out over the roof of the restaurant which was not pretty. There was no chair in front of the dressing table, nowhere to put anything at all in the bathroom due to thoughtless design, no wardrobe, just a rail, and no luggage stand. And one of the lightbulbs had blown. We mentioned these things and they were rectified. The next day we came back from a day in Oxford and were really disappointed that the room hadn't been serviced properly. The bed had been very badly made and that was it. Bathroom not tidied or cleaned at all, floor not hoovered, tissues and loo rolls not even replaced. I actually walked downstairs, was again told by someone on reception that she didn't work in housekeeping so she didn't know about that, and they got the manager. We had a polite sit-down talk, and he offered to send someone up to do it right away, but we were getting changed to go out. My partner phoned reception shortly after and said that we would be grateful if they could clean the room whilst we out. The receptionist said 'Oh I'll tell him', again, passing on responsibility. When we got back later that evening, of course it had not been done. The breakfast was one of the best things, but the staff were seriously stressed and often abrupt with guests. They didn't know what to do when numbers got too high and just walked away from guests saying 'I'll ask my supervisor' rather than taking ownership of the situation. When we left I was told I had to pay for one of the nights, and the receptionist was mightily confused when I explained to her that I already had paid for both, and had already had to email receipt of this to her colleague as I'd been asked about it twice already! When we got home, I then saw on my bank statement that I had been charged for the dinner, most of which was supposed to be included in the DBB price. I phoned up the hotel, and what a surprise, was told he didn't work in accounts so he couldn't resolve it. I asked him to email me and the manager regarding my request for a refund. As of the next day, he hasn't. In summary, the ethos of this hotel and its staff left us cold; and we think it does not merit its four star rating. Collapse

Our second visit to Hawkwell House didn’t disappoint..... The recent completion of bar and lounge renovations which were in progress during our first visit early last year added further to the comfort and warmth of this lovely hotel. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful during our 13 night stay with the large breakfast selection and friendliness of the restaurant breakfast staff being a highlight following a comfortable nights sleep. The breakfast restaurant supervisor Eileen was particularly very helpful during our visit and nothing was too much trouble to meet our culinary needs. Eileen also provided on more than one occasion helpful suggestions of where to go during our daily visits into Oxford and surrounds. Definitely looking forward to our next stay at Hawkwell House. Disappointed with our visit. Just returned from a weekend away for my birthday and our first wedding anniversary. Ahead of our arrival I asked if there was anything the hotel could do to make it special for us would be appreciated- this was acknowledged that they would do their best. Got there and even though the notes were on the booking form I signed there was nothing in our room! When I have seen previous trip advisor reviews saying how amazing these little touches were, it actually really saddens me. We chose a smaller ‘boutique’ hotel thinking that paying more would attract better customer service - it didn’t. In all honesty we would have been better paying half the cost and staying at a premier inn!! We stayed in a premier family room - room wasn’t exactly spacious. Interconnecting doors were open so we could do get into room next door and vice versa. We reported this to reception and yes it was fixed but we shouldn’t have had to do this. We don’t intend to return to oxford however if we did went wouldn’t stay at this hotel. Rooms need some care - I understand wear and tear but I expect more when parting with this amount of money. Large cracks down the wall etc. Collapse

Comfortable rooms, capacious conference hall and dining room, cosy lobby with fireplace. Staff is friendly and helpful, meals are really good. Nice lawns around. Located a bit far from public transports. A lot of parking space, though.
