The hotel staff were excellent from start to finish and we were very pleased with the quality of our room. However, we were disappointed with the limited dinner menu - although the food was o.k. it certainly was uninspiring - basically chicken and chips, burger, steak, risotto and one fish dish. On our second night we were unable to find a chair to sit on in the bar before dinner as a wedding party completely filled it leaving no room for other residents. We would certainly use this hotel again but will check to see if there is a wedding on during future stays. Collapse

A good find through the secret escapes website. Our package included bed, breakfast and a 2 course dinner over this weekend. In style it is country house/ conference centre / wedding venue. Is has smart modern ( if slightly soulless) interiors and attentive staff. BUT what was an unexpected wow was the quality of our evening meals. Imaginative, well flavoured dishes were presented by excellent and attentive servers. My dessert this evening included a sorbet that must have originated somewhere celestial! So go for the food if nothing else! Collapse

We have stayed at the Malmasion in the centre before but didn’t want to shell out over £500 for 2 nights so we found this one at a bargain £164 for 2 nights with breakfast included. When we first pulled in you could see building work at the front which was a tad worrying but actually it’s not noticeable at all once in the hotel and room. Our room was in the back building called Elm House. Lovely room and very comfy bed with a huge sash window. My husband was impressed they had ‘proper’ sky TV. The only downside to the room was the taps in the bathroom. The sink is small but the taps are powerful so you get soaked by splash but also the taps turn the wrong way so when you think your turning the water off your actually turning them up... the hot water is scolding so not nice when splashed over my bare belly. However, that is only a small matter. Breakfast on Sat morning was via a menu but Buffett in Sunday morning - both were really good and plenty of cold choices to help yourself to. Staff were all friendly and chatty. Would stay again next time! You can walk 5 mins to end of the road and catch a bus to Oxford Center... they run every 15 mine and takes less than 10 mins or grab a taxi for £8. Collapse

Nice hotel. Went for a wedding reception/evening do. Lovely hotel inside and lots of parking! Good bar with a decent range of drinks. The prices of the drinks did seem to depend on who was serving though.

Bit of a mixed bag this one. We had booked a superior room for Saturday 5th May. Two weeks before I contacted the hotel and requested if an earlier check in would be available (as part of the superior room but subject to availability). I left a message on the website, when I didn’t receive a reply I emailed, emailed again, spoke to someone on the chat facility on the website, still nothing from the hotel. Not a great first impression. We arrived at the hotel and due to the bank holiday traffic we were a few hours later than anticipated and within the normal arrival time. Nothing was mentioned by reception. Another problem whilst checking in, the receptionist asked for my credit card details as I needed to pay for the room. I informed them I had already paid, they then told me I hadn’t paid only my credit card details were taken to hold the room. I produced my booking invoice which clearly stated Amount Paid XXX amount due to the hotel on arrival £0. It wasn’t as if this was booked through an agent, it was direct with the hotel. More confusion, more asking me to pay. We hadn’t even set foot in our room yet and already I was convinced I wouldn’t be coming back. Eventually they began to believe the customer, yet I was asked to provide evidence and felt like a criminal. Not a good start. The room itself was in the self-contained block Elm House appeared lovely on first sight. Nice size, bathroom (with a proper bath on a split level), Sky TV, tea and coffee making facilities, nice big sash windows with a view of the lawns between the two blocks. Later on we discovered that the room had a few issues, the curtains for example are not big enough, you are either left with a gap in the middle, or at either end. The two curtained windows we had were both the same, so sun streaming in at 6.30 on a Sunday morning didn’t help. The bath was nice but had a massive radiator at bath level behind it so impossible to sink down into the bath without banging/burning your head. On a personal level in my opinion the art on the walls would have scared a small child. The positives, nice clean bed, nice linen and towels, light, airy room. We had to request the bath robes which should have been in the superior room but when they arrived they were big, clean and fluffy. The double bed was comfortable but I didn’t get a good night’s sleep, could do with being bigger but this isn’t the hotels fault. The hotel has a number of function suites and appears to be in the market to cater for weddings. A wedding was on the weekend we were there but it didn’t interfere with the other hotel guests. The hotel has a nice bar area with a terrace which at the time of visiting was under renovation. We sat on the terrace for a couple of drinks on the Saturday evening which was quite nice. The barman was unable to charge drinks to our room as the system seemed incapable of locating guests, not the end of the world but would have been had we been a large party. As part of our deal we had breakfast included. Breakfast is served in the hotel’s restaurant which despite some plants and coloured glass is a pretty soulless place. It doesn’t have any windows but benefits from a couple of glass lantern panels in the room so at least it is soulless with some natural light. There is a continental buffet and a traditional English fry up buffet. Sounds promising but there were some glaring omissions. Fresh yoghurt but no granola (and a sever lack of choice of fruit). I was left having yoghurt with a little pack of Kellogg’s fruit and fibre thrown in. Much to my wife’s annoyance no black pudding in the hot breakfast, but the mushrooms and sausage were good. The bacon was overcooked apparently. Being a vegetarian I was surprised that unlike most hotels these days there was no veggie sausages but at least they had some hash browns which were good. It was our first visit to Oxford, which by the way is an amazingly beautiful place. We will definitely be heading back at somepoint. Hawkwell House is ideally located about a £6 cab ride away. All in all I would say that we will return to Hawkwell House. It could be pretty much perfect if it were to iron out the check-in admin and the odd issue, it’s a bit odd in places but on reflection I actually quite liked the place. Collapse
