As you drive up to the hotel, your soul drops, it looks like an office block. When you enter, the atrium and reception are lovely, the reception staff superb........then you get to your room. Tiny, do not bring a cat because you can’t swing a mouse! Poor functioning a/c left us struggling to sleep after my wife scalded her hand on a cup that was cracked and emptied on her in the room. The following morning after not so good a night, the shower was scalding and couldn’t be turned down. This meant a room change, to an equally tiny space for two but working a/c. What can I say about the restaurant, don’t, just don’t. We did and had a meal that we ate because we were hungry. Pre packed chicken curry, overcooked rice, pre packed fish, and a dessert that not hot, but tasteless. Whoever the food warmers are in the kitchen they are working under false pretences. To make matters worse there was entertainment on, to call him a poor busker would be an insult to buskers. To sum up, if you are needing to be in the area and need single occupancy of a small room it’s fine. Breakfast is good, just don’t dine in the restaurant. Collapse

Where to begin. I booked a stay including dinner and wine back in March, emailing to confirm our stay and booking dinner for 7.30. I received a reply saying they couldn’t find my booking, so after sending my confirmation, they said all was fine, with dinner booked and quiet room request noted. I emailed again earlier this week ( as I do with all our stays) to once again confirm everything in place, receiving a reply it was. We arrived yesterday to a distressed looking receptionist booking part of a large party in. She asked a member of staff on his way out ( for lunch?) to book us in. He asked if we wanted dinner! I said this was already pre booked, which he didn’t appear to know about, so said he’d arrange it. Our room ( big thanks for this, as due to soundproofing and no carpets in room, had we been for example in the area where the large party were situated, it would have been a very different story ) was as requested in the quiet part of the hotel. Very clean (very small as you’ve read in other reviews) but sadly no coffee on complimentary tray.(Didn’t go back to reception due to earlier busy stressed receptionist still booking in party). After unpacking and walking into the lovely town nearby, we prepared for our 7.30 dinner. We entered the dining / bar area, only to stand waiting quite a while with no staff member to greet us. So we spoke with a young lady behind the bar about our booking who said she knew nothing about it !! She said we could sit anywhere as it wasn’t busy. She then came over later (as no one else appeared to be serving) to say they didn’t know of our stay and had we actually checked in ! We had obviously, and our keycard was on the table. She apologised, disappeared then returned after some time with the offers small menu. A glass of fizz was included in our stay, and we asked for a wine list but were told they didn’t have one but what would we like! Obviously knowing what they might have plus prices would help, but instead had to plump for a bottle of white ( at £18) better than nothing. We then waited some time for our wines. We asked please for water too, which we didn’t get until my husband reminded the young lady when he was able to pin her down which was well into our main course. She, besides a very brief visit from a young lad, was the only person working here. Thank goodness there was only a table of four and two tables of two ( who all left around the time we sat down for our food) so leaving us as the only diners, otherwise we probably would still be sitting there now. After a long wait for our mains, (despite my seeing chefs disappearing into kitchen and others already in there, who didn’t appear to be doing much), the food was good portions and fine. Our empty plates were left for sometime, and an even longer wait for our three scoop ice cream desserts (which strangely we had to order at the same time as our mains rather than waiting until after) which were sitting at the pass for an age ( I was just about to go up and get them myself before they melted into nothing, when the young lady finally came back to serve them) They were incomplete without the supposed sauce topping ( we ate them regardless as we just couldn’t hold out for an even longer wait) The young lady mentioned upstairs the large party were having dinner, and she had to keep popping up there to help too! Leaving people at the bar (and our restaurant of course) downstairs waiting an age for drinks or service. Sorry but don’t you think just the odd few extra staff more would have been helpful. The hotel should not come to a halt for all other guests just because a large party were being catered to ( with different chefs in a different kitchen up there I might add). Dreadful organisation, and not at all professional for what’s being offered as a smart hotel. My husband went to the toilet and noticed ( as we both did at other times too) plenty of suits behind reception podium milling around, but no one actually appearing to be doing anything. Also every receptionist we spied from a distance, did not look particularly happy in their work, how very strange ? Now - to the other VERY big complaint. There was a singer in the bar/restaurant ( which I must stress is a SMALL shared area all told, with wood flooring and very echoey. Just one room really with bar in the middle, and kitchen and seating one side, table chairs the other) throughout our dinner singing, and it was at the loudest ear splitting ever. Whilst we both love music, and hearing it whilst having dinner is a nice idea, it’s got to be said as a supposed ‘entertainer’ shame shame shame on her for setting her music and mike to such a loud loud pitch you just could not hear yourself think. We very much hope she reads this review and takes note. Do you really think that by singing this loud when you know just how loud you are, sounds great ? Really ??? It was so loud that you couldn’t hear anyone speak! When she took a break everyone was still shouting as we were all temporarily deaf. Shatter glasses it probably did ! and as for anyone in the houses opposite the hotel, I’m sure they were only able to re switch on their tv’s after she’d ended her set, as she was surely trying to sing to everyone outside of Newport Pagnell as well. It may sound funny, but It totally ruined the whole evening. We of course (tried) to speak about this to the young lady serving, who totally agreed with us ( after a great deal of sign language and lip reading due to the din) but she did nothing to try and get said singer to please lower the sound. Finally the singer packed up and cleared out , (hurrah) leaving those of us left, with hearing that’s probably been damaged forever! We couldn’t wait to leave to be honest. We eventually left, swiftly after dessert, and this took us up to nigh on 10 o’clock! An experience it certainly was, but not to be repeated. After a reasonable nights sleep we awoke to breakfast joining the large party upstairs in the other restaurant at around 7.45am. Hot food options were good, and tasty. No butter or coffee left though, and when another guest asked the young lad serving, about the very slow toaster he said sorry he’d only started work there a couple of days ago and hadn’t a clue. My husband went to get coffee when the jugs had been replenished, only to find coffee jug was on tea stand and tea on coffee ! Both jugs exactly the same with no labels on each so it was a lucky dip hit or miss when you poured each as to what you got. Maybe T or C on the jugs might help! On checking out at reception, we were asked how was our stay. Where do you start! Young lady probably wished she hadn’t asked. In fairness we gave a concise account of the stay so that it couldn’t be said we hadn’t mentioned these things before posting this review. We sadly just had a sorry. All in all it was ‘an experience’ But unfortunately not very positive for us. To the Manager, Please take note of our very long review, as these points let your hotel down very very badly. You may rely on consistent custom during the week ( as I’ve read from other reviews) but surely you should take heed of new custom during weekends and at least brief all your team on what’s going on. To be told by your hotel there’s no record of our stay, (especially during our dinner) and despite our regular emails right up to this week, sadly shows lack of hotel organisation. And please please please, sort out your singer ! Thanks. Collapse
