Where's the Hampton spirit? Not here apparently.

I was looking for an accommodation in the central area and as an Hilton Honors member I found the Hampton Newcastle quite handy. Unfortunately somehow I was only able to book minimum two nights though I intend to only stay fit one. So after booking, I tried contacting the hotel several times as well as through the Hilton customer service. Unfortunately I did not receive any reply at all, which I'd quite uncommon for this hotel chain. In all Hamptons I stayed in the past the customer service was exceptional, but it seems that this is not the case in this property. I canceled the booking and am going to stay anywhere else now. Stayed here on the May bank holiday weekend with my partner and had a very enjoyable stay. We were travelling up from London by train so this hotel could not have been easier to get to from the central train station, you literally cross the road and it's there. The entrance is slightly concealed to the right of a bar/restaurant but easy enough to find. Reception is on the 2nd floor which leads to my only very small gripe of our stay here - there was only one lift in action during our stay. Normally we'd walk up a couple of flights of stairs but I was unfortunately on crutches so unable to and we often had to wait quite a while to be able to get a lift up and down as it was the only one serving all the floors. Check-in was swift and efficient. We were given a room on floor 2, the reception floor, which suited us just fine given the crutches situation! We were room 230 which was towards the back of the hotel and surprisingly quiet given the city centre location. We had no issues with noise during our stay. Room was plenty big enough with a lovely bed. Everywhere looked spotlessly clean, there's a kettle to make tea and coffee and also a safe in the bedside table to use. They also provide a good hairdryer which you can plug in where you wish rather than one of those horrible ones you have to hold the button down on that's wired into the bathroom, big plus point for me! Bathroom was also really nice, clean and modern with a huge walk-in shower. There are also complimentary shower gel, shampoo and conditioner dispensers rather than the one vague multi-purpose liquid you get in a lot of places. Breakfast is complimentary which makes the price we paid for rooms really good value. We found the breakfast selection plenty ample with a selection of hot and cold items including all the basics for an English breakfast, continental options and also a waffle maker. Although we ate breakfast in the busier times, around 9.30/10am (breakfast is served until 11 at weekends) we never had a problem getting a table and food was always available and being replenished. The bar is open to residents 24 hours and quite a few people were using it during our stay, you can also buy snacks there too. The staff doing the reception and bar were always helpful and friendly. As a base for a weekend exploring a city this ticked all the boxes. It was clean and comfortable and very well located. A short stroll into the city centre and about 10/15 minutes to walk to the Quayside. We didn't explore as much of the city as we'd have liked to due to the crutches situation so we will definitely return to Newcastle and if we can stay here again we will. Collapse
