This hotel is looking a little 'tired' in places, but this did not mar our stay. Good spa and gym area, the evening meal was tasty and well presented, the staff are friendly and accommodating. One complaint. This is the first hotel where we have been woken up at 7am on a Sunday by repeated knocking on the door to take delivery of the Sunday Newspaper. Delivery without the disturbance would have been much better. Collapse

It’s fine, but expensive food/drinks and noisy if there is a function.

We stayed at the Hallmark Hotel on a Saturday evening before a flight from Manchester airport. I would suggest from personal experience the hotel is more comparable with a Travelodge than a spa hotel and this should be taken into account with respect to price paid. But we found an acceptable rate on a third party website and therefore had no issues with the cost. However, as the room had no form of temperature control (such as AC or even a fan) we had a choice of either keeping the windows open and being kept awake by the wedding reception (which continued past midnight) or being too hot to sleep. Unfortunately we had no choice but to opt for the former and accept a limited amount of rest. Another point for consideration was the cost of the food and drink within the hotel. These seemed excessive and after a short venture into the bar opted to go to the Pub across the road which served good food and beer at a far better price. That said, the room was comfortable, the breakfast was fine and the staff were pleasant. Collapse

This my second visit to this hotel both for special occasions and I hoped at least the service would be better this time. The room the food etc all fine when it was actually ready -late of course with a nonchalant attitude not what you want after a funeral! The bar staff, 2 young guys one obviously newish who was lovely and unfortunately spoken to and bullied by the other guy I think his name was Jack, rude uncaring couldn’t care less attitude obviously didn’t want to be there at all and was certainly not going to be nice to his colleague never mind customers! Some serious training in customer service needed here such a shame this is overlooked. Collapse

We Booked a spa break for bank holiday weekend. The hotel was extremely busy as I believe there was a wedding or event on also. The reception staff got us booked in as quickly as possible. We had tried in vain for the two week leading up to book our included treatments but were told they couldn’t fit us in. Which was disappointing as when we have used the Hulk branch they made sure everything was prebooked and sorted well in advance. Reception were helpful and agreed to give us a part refund. Our room was a little tired but comfy but was extremely hot and had no air con. We used the window but the fans from the kitchen were right outside so were quite loyd during the night. The curtains weren’t black out either. We were meant to have wine and chocolates in the room but these weren’t there. The food was lovely but service was VERY slow and our waitress wasn’t knowledgable about the menu or products. The spa was more like a public swimming pool. There were children’s swimming lessons going on when we used it. Children were in the steam room and hot tub. The sauna was out of order. We weren’t offered robes and slippers even though they were meant to be included. The gym was run down. The man working couldn’t be bothered printing more sign in sheets so told us not to bother. He also complained about being stuck there saying he had a business to run and was trying to sort stuff for his own business whilst working at the spa. We wouldn’t use this location again but the reception and bar staff were clearly trying to make the best out of a bad situation. The restaurant and spa staff need more training. I did give feedback and the manageress said they would pass it on to the relevant person. Collapse

I'm going to start out by saying that we booked a Groupon spa deal where we got a twin room, a spa treatment each, a 3 course dinner and use of the rest of the spa facilities. For what we paid, it was a bargain - an absolute bargain. The hotel was lovely. Clean, friendly staff, the room was more than adequate, the shower was hot with decent water pressure and the towels were soft and fluffy. We did extend our checkout to 12noon from 11, so that was good (it was offered, we didn't need to ask). The food was good at dinner and breakfast. The drinks were expensive but this was a hotel so that is par for the course. There was no air conditioning in the hotel and we went on a very hot weekend, but all available doors and windows were open. The hotel would get a 4/5. Decor was a little dark in reception - not light and airy as you might expect; no air conditioning; check-in not until 3pm. We were told we would have to pay £5 for the car parking as we were on the Groupon deal (wasn't mentioned in the small print). However, every coin has two sides. The spa. We had to hire our robes for £5. That was a first for me... The changing rooms were clean (except for the mud bought in on someones shoes which is more down to guests than the spa), the lockers didn't require money or a key and were big enough to put in an airline cabin sized case as well as robe, towel clothes and shoes. The pool room was stifling, I know spas are supposed to be warm but my goodness, this was hot! There were around 10 loungers around the pool, most with towels but no people. The sauna was broken so we couldn't use that. The pool was a good temperature but I would say it was dirty. The scum line at the water mark around the pool was disgusting and the smell coming from the water vents smelled of sewage. It was awful. When you were swimming though, you couldn't smell it - it was just close to the vents. The hot tub was fine - lot and bubbly. The steam room made me gag. The smell of sewage in there was unbearable. We weren't the only people to notice this but I did mention it to one of the guys working there who said it was too hot for him to go and investigate but he would clean it that night after hours. The next day it was no different. The gym equipment (I used the cross trainer, bike & treadmill) was old but it worked and was fine. The pool and gym facilities would get a 2/5. The spa treatments themselves were fine too. The treatment rooms are up some VERY steep stairs so be warned if you're unsure on your feet - my mother could not have made it up there for instance. We weren't offered water after the massage which I thought unusual, but other than that it was good. Spa treatments 3.5/5 Overall, if you're going for a hotel, this one is as good as many, better than some. I don't know what the 'normal' price for a room is but I would expect it to be more than a budget hotel but not at all expensive. If you're going for a spa break, or were wanting use of a pool, sauna, steam room, gym... Avoid like the plague. Collapse
