I have stayed at the Grove several times but not for 6 years or so. Check in was very busy but seemed to run reasonably effectively even though there were a lot of people checking in. When we walked to our room I was surprised that the decor was the same as it was when it first opened with the same plastic cases outside each room with the same objects in them. The room was clean as it should be but very dated and desperately in need of refurbishment. Service was excellent as it should be for a 5 star hotel. This hotel needs a complete refurbishment and I am surprised the reviews are so positive. Collapse

I want to write a stellar review for this hotel but it wouldn’t be fair to the venue (to improve) and other guests looking to stay at the hotel, so I’m going to be fair and helpful. The things that are 5 star about this hotel: the well kept gardens, beautiful smelling flowers and spacious grounds. In part, some of the friendly service, reception was always a pleasure. The room turn down and limitless towels! The walled garden on a sunny day, you could be anywhere in the world (we were lucky with the weather but it’s not something you can rely on.) Things that weren’t 5 star: ingnored by concierge on arrival with our bags (can’t help feeling its because we didn’t arrive in a top of the range Range Rover). Me and my belongings ‘stepped’ over to help others arriving after. The tired decor and hallways, even the rooms could do with an update. Being seated next to noisy children running around in the restaurants as a couple without children on a luxury weekend away (we spoke up but some wouldn’t), poor food availability in restaurants and poolside (one evening all starters gone other than fish at 8pm! on a weekend!) The ‘5 star’ buffet baffles me, it was nice but not 5 star, they often don’t go hand in hand. It’s not cheap to stay at this hotel but they’re obviously doing more spa packages and I get a real sense they treat you depending on ‘status’, if you’re a regular you’re fine, if you’re not it’s pot luck depending who you stumble across. You don’t know how someone has come to stay there. We didn’t go on a package but was treated like I was in one, felt at times like my money wasn’t good enough compared to others who were overtly flashy. Class is much more than money. As an educated professional, with a reasonable income, working my way up in the world, I wouldn’t turn my nose up on a customer such as me. Once this hotel is fully 5 star it will be amazing! We just stayed for 1 night as part of the spa break package. We found certain parts of the hotel to be outstanding and certain parts very average. The good 1. The hotel and grounds are stunning. The gardens are beautiful especially in the sunshine. It’s so well thought out and cared for. 2. Breakfast was top class with a huge selection on offer. We loved it. 3. The reception staff and all managers/waiting/serving staff in the main hotel were very professional and attentive. 4. The little off shoots like the lounge areas were very unique and classy and a nice quiet place to have a drink. 5. The spa treatments were great. We had a body massage and wrap. Both were as described and very relaxing. The bad 1. The Stables Restaurant was very average. The food was ok but not much more than a chain pub. Our waitress wasn’t very attentive and getting a drink was a bit of a struggle. Her general attitude was a bit grumpy and a world apart from the staff in the main hotel. The ‘Rhubarb Fool’ was bizarre. It was a half pint glass filled with cream with a little bit of rhubarb at the bottom and oats on top. It was inedible. 2. The hotel decor in the communal halls (new part of the hotel) is a bit basic and not very representative of what you would expect from a hotel like this. The room (180) was nice but simple in some areas. We have stayed it better for much less cost. 3. In the spa (outside area) there was nobody offering us a drink which is strange considering the opportunity for additional revenue. We had to walk to the juice bar (back via spa reception) to get something. Although this isn’t a huge issue we just expected to be pampered and indulged given the cost. All in all the stay was good but there are a few simple areas where the stay could have been better for us. Collapse

We’ve just got back from an afternoon tea which was a gift for our 30th wedding anniversary. First time we’ve been - stunning grounds, excellent decor, beautifully prepared food and the icing on the cake was the lovely Olivia who served our tea, very friendly and professional and made sure we wanted for nothing. We preferred it to the Ritz! Will definitely go again or to gift a tea/meal to someone else is a good idea. Collapse

My friend and I arrived and our luggage was whisked away along with the car and this was the start of the luxury service provided at our stay. We went straight into afternoon tea together with champagne in the relaxing lounge which was very tasty with a lovely attentive member of staff keeping everything refilled ....to the extent that we were too full to eat the cakes so they were packed away and taken to our room. Our room was lovely overlooking the gardens with a balcony. It was roomy and immaculate. The bathroom was large with a walk in shower and a much too large bath for me to relax in as I kept sliding down. Breakfast was lovely with quality ingredients and everything you could imagine. I used the gym which was well equipped. The spa was lovely especially after a relaxing massage. It was a special birthday and the extras they provided whilst visiting made my birthday especially memorable and very appreciated. Looking forward to my next visit. Collapse
