the hotel has been taken over and had undergone refurbishments to the main area which reflects in the pricing of drinks etc, the rooms however remain the same very run down and in need of repair and updating which is not reflected in the price of staying there very disappointing, the food was ok I would not call a fruit salad by that name when the main ingredient was a roughly chopped apple and 1 grape, the main dish was swimming in veg water and the meat was very fatty, had the cod on the second night I could have bounced it off the wall I had to send it back the second one that came was not very much better, on a positive note and the only one the breakfast was second to none outstanding and a vast choice, the staff were very good and pleasant but we did witness a few disagreements between them and the management which was very unprofessional resulting with the staff member in tears, excellent location within walking distance to the outlet and the Old Blacksmiths which is well worth a visit on the whole a disappointing stay room and food wise but when eventually the hotel is finished and they replace the chef it will be a good hotel though I have no doubt the prices will jump up considerably. Just returned from a weekend at the Hotel. It's obvious that improvements are ongoing and when completed the hotel will be very much improved. We were on a coach trip and spent all day on the road returning to the hotel in the evenings.Evening time at the hotel was very boring and as we had been out all day we didn't feel like going out again to seek entertainment. It would have been nice if some form of entertainment was provided if only on weekends.I found the food very good especially the breakfast, however some amongst us including my wife found the food rather hit and miss. The beef was very tough and required a lot of chewing and the veg was slightly more than al dente and in fact appeared to be warmed in hot water and not actually cooked. As it is a wedding venue there were lots of young children up very late and running around the bar area like wild animals.None of the staff tried to stop this from happening and this resulted in several of our party retiring to bed earlier than they would have liked.Apart from being very annoying it was also very dangerous as people were walking back and fore to the bar area carrying drinks and I almost bumped into these kids on a number of occasions. Stayed here before and was happy but this visit was disappointing the staff were not friendly and the room was very small, the only lights the room had was 2 bedside lights no ceiling light, the bathroom had black mould on bathroom tiles and ceiling, behind the toilet was dirty. The tv was small and stuck in the corner with limited channels. I was informed on checking that I would have to pay for breakfast which was £12-75,what a high price. Collapse

Stayed here for three nights as a wedding guest. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, the staff were on the ball all through it, the wedding coordinator let us know nothing was too much trouble for them and it was proven to be true. My brother and his new bride felt like they were the only couple being married that day although there was more on that day. Firstly the bridal room, now this was a beautful room so much that the pending husband was chuffed to take all their guests up to show it of, certainly a very nice room. Now my room it was clean and tidy though it could do with a bit of updating......(that said it looks like they are on it) the wedding ceremony went without a hitch and was that good it meant it was stress free for the Bride. The breakfast....I defy you to leave the table hungry....plentiful food to be had. Collapse

Travelled up to Gretna Green last December and stayed at this hotel for our 2nd visit and it was even better than last time. The hotel is traditional with the coaching house and blacksmiths marriage history but what makes it one of our favourites is its setting and grounds and its a walk to the local pubs and tourist centre. The rooms have been refurbished and are very nice and if you get a view over the green and pond its even better. Breakfast is great and plenty of food and the bar area in the hotel is good to have a drink, have a meal or simply just sit and relax. The staff in the hotel are also what makes it a great stay and there is plenty of free parking available. Take a walk to the tourist area, about 5 minutes, or down to the retail park and local pub, about 10-15 minutes. Right on the England/Scotland Border and a friendly town. Collapse
