I was expecting big things from the Great Victoria but this once amazing piece of Bradford architecture has had a huge fall from grace, mostly due the clear neglect of its rooms. I booked this hotel for: 2 nights (Friday-Sunday) 2 Adults & 2 Children (C1 Age: 14 months, C2 Age: 2 years old) Breakdown of costs: Family Room for 2 nights: £88 Parking for 2 days: £7.00 Breakfast for 2 days: £28 – this was advertised at the time of booking as £10.95 per person per day, but was offered to us at the time of check-in for £7.00 per person per day TOTAL: £123.00GBP Upon arrival to the hotel, we were given a warm welcome by the reception lady. I was saddened by the news we were located on the 3rd floor of this giant building but my misery was even further compounded by the fact the lift was out of action for this weekend. I found the weekend bit a bit odd, so asked the cleaner who changed our towels about it the next day and she told me it had been out of action for much longer than that. So we were lied to. My first complaint is that I specifically ask for 2 cots to be in the room, the hotel before booking asked for the age of my children also, and yet still placed us on the top floor knowing they had a broken lift? Surely the hotel had some responsibility to tell us this before we booked. Anyone with children that age is fully aware of the mountain of stuff you have to take with you, my son can barely walk and my girl is only 2 so the steps for her were like Mount Everest. It wouldn’t be too bad if they were normal steps, but one flight of steps were the equivalent to 2 modern day flights of steps. I single handed had to carry first my 20kg suitcase to the top, dragging it up the stairs nearly having an asthma attack by the time I got to the top (I have asthma). I then had to come back down stairs, to they carry my children along with the rest of my luggage to the top. This was agonising and extremely frustrating. Not to bother, the room will be lovely. Nope! The room was old, tired, dark and dingy and that’s me being polite, I will let the pictures do the talking. The worst was the carpet which felt like it hadn’t been washed in 10 years at least. My son is part crawling and part walking, at the end of most evenings I had the wipe his white trainers down and his knees as the carpet was so dirty is was unreal. Cob webs hung from the once lovely lighting and there was a thick layer of dust on the walls which is usually a sign of a room that’s never really had a proper clean. The bathroom door wouldn’t not even close and the black scum trapped in the corners of the bath literally made me want to vomit. There was a hole in the bathroom door which had been filled but no-one bothered to paint and there was clear damp in the top corner of the room. On Saturday night, we got back late, trudged all the way up to our room to find our room card stopped working. We shouted down from the top floor to reception as there’s no way we were going to go back down, but the reception boy was as useful as watching paint dry, and made us walk all the way back down to sort the card out, then walk all the way back up. If you want leave during the day, you need to collect a token from reception. Again it was infuriating that you would walk past the person on reception, say bye were going out for a while in the car, and they wouldn’t even kindly remind you to collect a token. On Saturday morning, the breakfast was in the basement of the hotel, which meant climbing down another set of stairs, but on Sunday it was in the restaurant (reception level). The person on reception clearly saw me walk past reception holding my son, to go down the next set of stairs for breakfast but pig-headedly didn’t have the decency to stop me and tell me breakfast was today in restaurant. So again had to walk back up another set of stairs. I cannot say I will ever stay here again. I’m flabbergasted to think in total I paid £123.00 to stay here and didn’t even leave feeling relaxed, happy or content with my stay. I will be pursuing a full refund. Stay away from this hotel, and if you have a family, then don’t go within a 5 mile radius of it! Appalling! Collapse

I love the Victoria hotel where the Avenue is situated. It is a gracious Victorian building and I have attended a wonderful wedding here in the past. I really want to be able to leave a good review but I'm struggling. My recent experience of a meal with my partner at the Avenue left a lot to be desired. Not much atmosphere. We were the only people there - and it was silent. No background music or mood lighting. Felt very sparse. The menu is not lavish for choice but there is enough with 6-7 choices for each course. Our starters were fine - mussels. My partner had ordered sea bass as a main course - which came with some veg; however that was unavailable. So he changed his order to sirloin steak which came with some roasted cherry tomatoes and nothing else. There are side orders available on the menu and it is partly our fault that we failed to notice this. It would just have been nice if the waiter had pointed out the need to do this. In the end he ate his side of chips after he had finished his (rather tough) steak which is when they arrived. The steak also came without a steak knife, which proved difficult. When he looked for a waiter to request one there was not a soul to be found. On a positive note, my chicken supreme was tasty. This restaurant accepts Taste cards; however, using one was complicated. The staff member had not encountered one before. The bill had to be recalculated and the Taste card app was not enough. I had to screenshot it and email it to the hotel reception in the end before we could finally pay the bill. Collapse

The a great Victoria Hotel was a great experience , located on the edge of Bradford CBD , It is a step into yesteryear , in need of a spruce up to highlight the wonderful old world decor . Oorvroom needed a bit of work , but the king bed was really comfortable , the old fashioned bathroom had a huge bath wit lots of hot water.. The front desk was staffed 24 hours a day with highly trained staff who were friendly , courteous and helpful . The breakfast buffet was great and the lounge bar that was open 24 hours for drinks and snacks was comfortable and enjoyable place to relax in . I also found the gym was a good place to start the day early in the morning . We would be more than happy to stay there again. Collapse
